INDIAN
ART
Mehndi
.
MehndiMehndi, in Indian tradition, is
typically applied during Hindu
weddings and festivals. A paste
is made using the powdered dry
leaves of the henna plant. Many
women have Henna applied to
the palms and back of the hands
and feet and sometimes on the
back of their shoulders too. Men
have it applied on their arms,
legs, back, and chest.
Your task
Trace your hand, arm or foot onto paper
Using brown or black felt tips, design your
pattern in the Mehndi style
It will look best if you cut out the shape and
stick it on to coloured paper.
Rangoli
Rangoli is an art form in which patterns are
created on the floor, often by the house
entrance
Materials such as coloured rice, dry flour,
coloured sand or flower petals are used
They are usually made during Diwali or other
Hindu festivals. Rangolis are thought to bring
good luck
The religious significance is that gods are
attracted towards Rangoli designs therefore
invited into the house
Rangoli designs can be simple geometric or
flower and petal shapes. Sometimes Indian
gods and important animals are included
Create your own Rangoli
design using a grid or use one
of the designs in the resource.
Or
Make a large stencil, to create
a Rangoli pattern on the
ground using coloured chalk
or coloured rice (see the
resource for instructions).
Tip: rotate the stencil to make a
full pattern. Take a photo!
