WILDLIFE IN INDIAThe diversity of Indian Wildlife is not secondary to its African counterpart, perhaps superior inmany ways. No wonder it is among the 17 mega diverse countries which has about 60-70% ofbio-diversity on the planet. One cannot discount the heterogeneity of habitat. The Western ghats, and Himalayan regions are the gems of our rich heritage. Some very successful conservationprogrammes like, the Project Tiger, Project Elephant, Project Rhino, have ensured not onlysurvival but we can safely say thriving population of many species in our Eco-system. In morethan 100 national parks, 500 wildlife sanctuaries, India has the largest population of Royal BengalTigers in the wild, which happens to be our umbrella and Super Star species. Not lagging farbehind are Asiatic Lions endemic to India, Asian Elephants, One Horned Rhinos, Snow Leopards,Himalayan Black Bears, and we are proud to be home to more than 1200 bird species.

Exploring the glorious wilderness of the Indian subcontinent is a lifetime experience, which has instore, countless exciting possibilities and timeless memories. The extravagant canvas is spread.Tocomplete a perfect picture, all one needs is a vision that will lead and a mentor that will guide.

The size varies according to thetype of habitat they live in, Tigers from theHimalayas being larger in size from the onesfrom Central & Southern India.

The Indian Tiger also known as the RoyalBengal Tiger is bright in color with welldeveloped stripes and a short luxuriant coat. Itis mainly a solitary animal keeping itself to thedensely forested areas. In India, the remains ofthe tigers have been found till the altitude of10,000 ft which shows its adaptability. It can befound in the dense evergreen forests, in theforests on the foothill of the Himalayas, in theforests of central India and in the Sunderbanswhere it leads a sort of amphibious life.

At present the Lions arefound only in the Gir forest in the district ofJunagadh in Gujarat. This forest reserve at onetime was the hunting reserve of the formerMaharaja of Junagadh and on his initiative Lionswere protected from their impendingdeath.
