Question:

How can we help Earth sustain our growing population?

Answer:

We chose India as our country for this project. India individually cannot solve the global crisis, but since it has the second largest population it can help. Our answer to the question posed is for India to decrease import and exports and increase farming, as the country needs to sustain its growing population. India also needs to increase funding to the education system so that people are more educated and aware of the problems their growing population has.

The population of India is growing at a constant rate and isthe second largest in the world. Compared to many other countriesit isn’t a very large. As a result there are overpopulation issueswhich doesn’t help the cause of fighting the environmental problem of unsustainable population growth.

The equation for this graph isY=7.17•1.01^xThe predicted populationif continued at this ratewould be 1.39 billionpeople in 20 years.

Import & ExportYear Import Export

The import and exports of a country shows the progress and economical developmentwhich correlates with population because the more they are prosperous in their economythe better the country is doing. This directly relates to how much money the country hasfor educating people and solving the problem of starvation and overpopulation.

Unemployment in IndiaYear Unemployment %

2002 8.82003 9.52004 9.22005 8.92006 7.82007 7.22008 6.82009 10.72010 10.82011 9.8

As the Indian population grows, more jobs are needed, but most businesses are not growing enough to provide the much needed jobs to all of these people. Because of the population growth and lack of jobs, unemployment rates have increased in the past few years. This is part of the problem of over population.

Indian Land: India supports 18% of the worlds population. Land degradation is a

serious problem here. This land degradation that has been getting worse over the years, is being caused because of inappropriate land use, agricultural practices, social conflicts, droughts, but most of all because of the growing number in people they're getting every day. With this land degrading, it is impacting economic growth,  but not only is it doing that, it is also affecting our global climate change crisis.

Food in India

Starvation in India is a serious issue, since the population is so great it is hard to provide food for all of those people. There are currently 190 million starving people in India today and that number would increase if the population increased. The Indian food industry stood at 135 billion dollars US currency which isn’t enough to support its population and so if more recourses are put into generating enough food for the whole country there wouldn’t be starving people. Which is a start to the problem of sustaining our population.
