Clariant’s new pigment preparationsunit at Tangerang (30 km west ofJakarta, Indonesia) is expected tocome on-stream in September 2013,doubling capacity at this site.
Clariant is also finalising thefeasibility study for expanding by 50%its azo pigments and pigmentpreparations plants at Roha (120 kmsouth of Mumbai and 120 km west ofPune, India)
Clariant’s marketing and salesorganisation in China, India andIndonesia will be doubled during2013, with the company planning toinvest SFR 8 M to enhance itsposition in these three countries.The addition of Regional ProductManagers for both azo pigments andpigment preparations will strengthenthis support. Mr Marco Cenisio(Senior Vice President & GeneralManager Business Unit Pigments)commented: “These initial steps arethe first in a broader strategy toinvest and develop our capabilities inChina, India and Indonesia in orderto better serve our customers and toprovide them with the high qualityproducts and superior technicalsupport they need to be successfulin growing their businesses. Weexpect to make furtherannouncements regarding ouradditional plans for the region soon.”

India: Heubach & Toyo Ink – azopigments
Heubach Colour Pvt Ltd, the wholly-owned Indian subsidiary within theHeubach group (headquartered atLangelsheim, Germany), has signedan agreement with Toyo Ink (of Japan)to establish a joint venture, which willbuild a 2000 tonnes/y azo pigmentsplant at Heubach’s Ankleshwarcomplex (90 km south of Vadodara/Baroda, Gujarat). The plant isscheduled to come on-stream in May2014.
Heubach opened its Ankleshwarcomplex in 1995 and it now producesa wide variety of pigments here,including classic red, blue, yellow andgreen pigments, as well as diketo-
pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP) andquinacridone. The alliance withHeubach should strengthen Toyo Ink’ssales of pigments in India and in otherAsian markets.

Thailand: Huntsman – reactive dyes
The Textile Effects division ofHuntsman Corp held a ceremony on30 January to officially inaugurate thecompany’s new speciality synthesisunit at its Mahachai complex, nearSamut Sakhon (35 km southwest ofBangkok). The new unit is designed tomanufacture reactive dyes, notablyproducts based on Huntsman’sproprietary fluorotriazine (CF-3)chemistry.
Mr Paul Hulme (President, TextileEffects) said: “This synthesis unit isthe only one in its class in terms ofscale and quality of output, whichunderpins our drive to be a leader intechnological innovation in ourindustry.” The new unit, plus upgradesof other facilities, absorbed $12.5 Mworth of capital investment. Five yearsago, Huntsman spent $5 M on theMahachai complex, in order to make ita global centre for the manufacture ofwool dyes.

United Arab Emirates: Takreer – carbonblack
Kilburn Engineering (of Thane, India)has been awarded a $7.1 M contractby Samsung Engineering for thesupply of pelletising and drying unitsfor the two-line carbon black plantunder construction at Ruwais (230 kmwest along the coast from Abu Dhabicity-centre). The plant is one ofseveral new plants being built at theRuwais refinery and petrochemicalscomplex of Takreer (aka Abu DhabiOil Refining Co). According toSamsung, the carbon black plant willhave a capacity of 30,000 tonnes/yand it should be operational by theend of 2015. (See also ‘Focus onPigments’, Sep 2012, 4).

COMPANIESAlbis buys Addmaster’s Biomastertechnology for antimicrobialmasterbatches
Albis Plastic GmbH (of Hamburg) hassigned a technical cooperationagreement with Addmaster (ofStafford, UK), whereby Albis willmanufacture and market additivemasterbatches and plasticcompounds, employing Addmaster’ssilver-based Biomaster technology forminimising the growth and spread ofmicro-organisms. The goal of theapplication is to equip plastics, withouthaving to coat them, for hygiene-critical areas. Albis is one of the topten masterbatch suppliers in Europe,with plants at Hamburg, Zülpich (50km southwest of Cologne) andKnutsford (30 km southwest ofManchester).

BASF to shed 500 jobs in itsPerformance Products segment
BASF has announced a programmefor restructuring its PerformanceProducts segment between now and2015, which will entail the loss of 350jobs in the Basel region of Switzerlandand the loss of a further 150 jobs atother sites around the world. Thecompany stated: “In some marketsegments, increasing standardisationand the entry of new competitors havechanged the business environmentsignificantly. This especially applies tothe markets for plastic additives andpigments as well as for water, leatherand textile chemicals.”
In the Pigments & Resins businessunit, European product and qualitymanagement and product safety willbe pooled in Ludwigshafen. Globalproduct management will in future beled from Hong Kong. In the PlasticAdditives business, a more market-oriented approach will be introduced.Supporting functions, such astechnology and strategy managementwill be consolidated in Ludwigshafen.This means that research activities inBasel will be scaled back and therewill be less need for administrativeservices currently provided by the
