India China Bhutan - Stand Off
In our regular meeting on August 18, 2017 President
Rtn. Dr. Rita Kalra welcomed the chief guest Dr. Col.
P.K. Vasudeva, Army Veteran, Columnist and a Defence
Analyst, who was accompanied by his gracious wife Lt.
Col. Dr. Uma Vasudeva. The presence of our former
Rotarian P.K. Verma was also acknowledged.
implemented since 01 July 2017 as „one nation one tax‟,
the biggest tax reform in India. Dr. Col. Vasudeva is a
soldier turned Economist after retirement. He attained
Ph.D in World Trade Organization (WTO). He was
Senior Executive in TATA Exports, Member of State
Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, UT
Chandigarh, Founder Director of AIMT (KU), Past
President of Chandigarh Management Association
(CMA), Principal-Director of College of Communication
and Management, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Consultant
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Studies and
Senior Professor of Icfai Business School, Chandigarh.
He has supervised more than 15 Research Scholars for
Ph.D degrees. He has been conferred with awards like
Punjab Rattan, COAS Commendation, Bharat Jyoti
Award and Gem of India Award.
Dr. Col. Vasudeva congratulated President Dr. Rita for
the projects taken up by our club in Chandigarh tricity
and complimented Rotarians for the work being done in
India and in other countries. Speaking about India China
Bhutan Standoff, he displayed 3 maps to explain the
standoff. China attempted to extend a road in Doklam.
Bhutan had formally objected to this, and hopes to get it
Dr. Col. P.K. Vasudeva
PP Rtn. Gurdip S. Deep
introduced the chief guest
Dr. Col. Vasudeva, who last
visited our club on October
14, 2016 as the chief guest,
when he had had given us an
informative presentation on
Goods and Service Tax
(GST), which is now being
Address by President
Dr. Rita Kalra
resolved peacefully and
amicably. Bhutan does not have
diplomatic relations with
China. All talks are conducted
through Indian and Chinese
ambassadors in India. Bhutan
has to be protected by India as
per agreements signed in the
past and because of India‟s
relations with Bhutan.
PP D.P. Khandelia honoring Rotarians for their contribution
Col. Vasudeva also discussed the strategic importance of
the Chumbi valley. He said China and India are not going
to attack in a big way. There may be some border
skirmishes or a short term operation to clear India from
Doklam area and declare cease fire. Both India and China
have their limitations for any major military conflict.
China has very serious problems within their country.
Communist Party of China is on verge of disintegration.
Col. Vasudeva said China is heading for a split due to their
internal disputes involving Shanghai faction, Beijing
faction and the democratic party which is coming up in
China against the communists. In addition to this China is
also having a severe social and labour unrest, and may
soon get disintegrated into 7 different regions.
Other positive sign for India, as pointed by Col. Vasudeva,
is the way External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has
handled the standoff issue. Another very important factor
is the strong support from Japan in favour of India, to
protect Bhutan.
Another very interesting fact which would discourage any
big conflict is the 120 billion dollar trade between India
and China. While India will suffer great losses if trade
stops, China will lose a very big market.
Dr. Col. Vasudeva concluded his talk on a very positive
note. He said, “Our missiles, Agni and others will save us
as these are the best in the world and most effective. Even
America does not have the missiles and technology that
India has, and we are proud of it.”
Rtn. Dr. Nitin Mathur presents a memento to Col. P.K. Vasudeva.
