parative physiology, and natural history.As such it represents an approach and asynthesis of continuing validity andinterest. This is presented with greatlucidity and narrative skill, and thereader is drawn along by the peculiarlyfelicitous analogies of which von Frischis such a master.

Unfortunately the author has notbeen well served by his translator andpublisher. There are a number of typo-graphical errors. The translation isover-literal in places and retains theword order of the original at the ex-pense of style and readability, and oc-casionally at the expense of sense.Units of measure have been half angli-cized by translating them from themetric system to inches. One can readi-ly recognize some of these conversions(1250 red blood cells form a row 2/5inches long), but other remain mysteri-ous (100-200 stomata in an area of1/2000 sq. in.). These are trivial mat-ters, but they impede the enjoyment ofthe book, particularly by the nonbiol-ogist to whom it is addressed. This isa pity, for a modest amount of editorialwork would have remedied the diffi-culties.

Thearticle on smoking and lung cancer, byE. Maurice Backett, is admirablyclear. W. M. S. Russell's discussionon "the use of animals for experi-ment" includes a wealth of detail newto me, at least; anyone confrontedwith antivivisectionist activities shouldconsult this paper written by a manwho was, for five years, engaged in thestudy of humane laboratory techniques.

A new radiochromatogram scanningsystem by Nuclear-Chicago combinesthe advantages of 4-pi detection withwindow or windowless operation to offergreater versatility and accuracy to theuser. Model 1032 Actigraph® incorpo-rates a small-volume, dual-chamber de-tector that simultaneously scans bothsides of the strip chromatogram. Exclusive detectoroperates with orwithout windowThe Actigraph is the only strip chro-matogram scanner that can be operatedeither windowless or with Nuclear-Chicago's ultra-thin MicromilOwindow(density-less than 150 micrograms /cm2).-Window operation offers several im-portant advantages to the researcherwhen counting beta emitters such as

carbon-14. Charge effects and the pos-sibility of chamber contamination arepractically eliminated, yet gas con-sumption is held to just 30% of the raterequired for windowless operation. Un-der normal conditions, the life of asingle tank of counting gas approaches1000 hours.

Meet OGO, the curious-looking object you see above.Actually, OGO is the family name; it stands for OrbitingGeophysical Observatory. There are two members of theOGO family: EGO (Eccentric Geophysical Observatory)and POGO (Polar Orbiting Geophysical Observatory).

EGO's purpose is to gather and transmit data onenergetic particles and other geophysical phenomena.It will be launched into an eccentric orbit by an Atlas-Agena B vehicle from Cape Canaveral late next year.

POGO will be boosted into a polar orbit by a Thor-Agena B from the Pacific Missile Range in early 1964.Its assignment will be to send back information aboutthe atmosphere and ionosphere, particularly over theNorth and South Poles.

Chromosomal breakage and rejoiningprocesses, repair or recovery of poten-tial mutational or lethal damage, doserate and fractionation effects, and stagesensitivity were the chief subjects ofdiscussion at the symposium on "Repairfrom Genetic Radiation Damage andDifferential Radiosensitivity of GermCells" which was held at Leiden, TheNetherlands, 15 to 19 August 1962,under the auspices of the Departmentof Radiation Genetics of the State Uni-versity of Leiden.

Dealing with various problems in theproduction of chromosome aberrations,papers by S. Wolff, D. R. Parker, H. J.Evans, and A. T. Natarajan emphasizedthe importance of the proximity ofchromosomes and chromosome parts indetermining dose kinetics and stage sen-

sitivity. Wolff pointed out how the con-

cept of a limited number of sites atwhich the chromosomes could be closeenough for rejoining can account formuch of the data represented by dosecurves, Parker showed how the lim-ited site concept can explain thechanges in sensitivity and in kinds ofaberrations during obgenesis in Dro-sophila. Evans discussed the role ofvariations in site number, oxygen ten-sion, and concentration of free thiolsin the sensitivity changes during thecell cycle. Natarajan discussed severalfactors controlling aberration produc-tion in seeds, among them postirradia-tion temperature.

Recent developments in the study ofpostirradiation repair of premutationaldamage were summarized in a series ofpapers on coliphage (W. Harm), Esche-richia coli (C. O. Doudney and E. M.Witkin), Paramecium (R. F. Kimball),and Drosophila (F. H. Sobels). Includedwere the demonstration of gene-con-

trolled repair in phage and bacteria(Harm), the analysis in bacteria of thebiochemical processes involved in re-

Lockheed is very proud of its F-104 Starfighter. At a recentU. S. Air Force Fighter Weapons Meet at Nellis AFB, Nev.,an F-104 (C model) outflew, outgunned, and outbombed all13 of its competitors.

Lockheed has given us permission to disclose that the F-104carries a 19.25mm hemisphere of KODAK IRTRAN 2 OpticalMaterial on the flat face of which we deposit by a uniquemethod a 4mm x 4mm film of lead sulfide to which leads areattached. This kind of infrared sensor we call a KODAK EK-TRON Detector, Type Q-5, Modified. The hemisphere has beenmade also out of another high-index infrared-transmittingmaterial, strontium titanate. Replacement of this by IRTRAN

2 material seems to make the time constant of the detector-

which is about 250 ,usec at 25°C-more stable over longperiods with less effect from storage conditions. Also, thedark resistance stays put better. Therefore the s/n drifts less.Incidentally, signal and noise levels are both high, whichlessens the demands on the associated circuitry. (NEP, how-ever, is less than 6.7 x 10- watts for 600°C radiation choppedat 2500 cycles/sec over a 1 cycle/sec bandwidth.)We mention high index. We are rather pleased at having it

Deter-mination of the digits often requires instrumentation. A soundtechnology has developed to support this instrumentation.The horseplayers gladly support the technology by their con-tributions. The technology is now old enough to have addedthe expression "photo finish"* to common speech.A photo finish negative is projected for the judges less than

25 seconds after the last horse crosses the finish line. Theynearly always wait for the last horse. If the last horse is quitelate, it looks longer than the first horse because there is hardlynieed for it to hurry any more as it passes the finish line. Thefinish line is the optical conjugate of a narrow slit at the focalplane of the camera. The film is exposed only at that point asit moves past the slit at constant speed.We have just introduced a new KODAK Timing Negative

Film for this work. We don't see why the new film should bedenied to off-track use. It is a 35mm film with the perforationsomitted and the edge legend KODAK SAFETY FILM reduced inheight to .014", all in order to make room for the timing signaland other indicia (some of which have been deleted from theabove illustration to protect the privacy of the jockeys). Whendeveloped for 10 seconds in the proper hot developer, ityields extraordinary definition at an Exposure Index of about100. Fixation is extremely rapid. Contrast is readily controlledby the processing parameters. Spectral sensitivity is notablyuniform from the ultraviolet to 630 m,u.
