The BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT)

The BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is a 2-hour subject-specific admissions test taken by applicants to Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science Courses. The BMAT is produced, administered and marked by the Admissions Testing Service, which also facilitates an extensive worldwide centre network at which candidates can sit the test.

What is the format of the test? The BMAT is a pen and paper test consisting of three sections:

Section 1: Aptitude and Skills A 60-minute section consisting of 35 multiple- choice or short answer questions. It tests generic skills often used in undergraduate study, including Problem Solving, Understanding Argument, and Data Analysis and Inference abilities.

Section 2: Scientific Knowledge and Applications A 30-minute section consisting of 27 multiple-choice or short answer questions. It is restricted to material normally encountered in non-specialist Science and Mathematics (i.e. up to and including National Curriculum Key Stage 4 Science and Mathematics).

Section 3: Writing Task A 30-minute section consisting of four essay questions, of which the candidate must answer only one.

Where can I find out more about the BMAT? The BMAT has a dedicated website. This provides further information about the test, administration, guidance for centres and candidates alike, as well as specimen test materials for practice purposes. In addition, the official guide, Preparing for the BMAT, (ISBN 9780435046873) provides you with all the information and materials you need to prepare for the test, including sample questions with answers and useful hints and tips. www.bmat.org.uk

The English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) The English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) was developed by the Admissions Testing Service on behalf of the University of Oxford. The ELAT was trialled in autumn 2006 in a number of schools and colleges and first administered to applicants applying to Oxford in 2007. Both the English Faculty at the University of Oxford and the Admissions Testing Service are committed to carrying out extensive research and reviewing results of the ELAT in relation to admissions decisions over the forthcoming admissions round.

What is the ELAT? The ELAT is designed to enable applicants to show their ability in the key skill of close reading, paying attention to such elements as the language, imagery, allusion, syntax, form and structure of the passages set for comment. It assesses how far students have developed this understanding and, with it, the ability to shape and articulate an informed response to unfamiliar literary material. The 90-minute test is designed to be accessible to all students in their last year of pre-university literary study. Candidates write one essay, comparing two or three passages of unseen poetry or prose. The ELAT is not a test of wide reading, nor is it based on the assumption that there are certain texts that all students should have read by this stage in their education. Marks will not be awarded for references to other texts or authors, nor will candidates be expected to try to apply any theoretical frameworks in their essay.

Where can I find out more? The ELAT has a dedicated website. This provides further information about the test, administration, guidance for centres and candidates alike, as well as specimen test materials for practice purposes. www.elat.org.uk

The Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) Mathematics The Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) is a well established Mathematics university admissions test, which is used to help select very academically able students for courses which are usually oversubscribed.

What is the STEP? The STEP assesses candidates’ ability to apply ways. The questions are longer than A Level questions and require persistence and insight to find the solutions, as well as for finished correct answers.

What is the format of the test? There are three STEP papers:

Mathematics I and II are based on the specifications for A Level Mathematics, with Mathematics II being more challenging than Mathematics I. The content for Mathematics III is wider and is only suitable for candidates studying Further Mathematics at A Level. Each paper is 3 hours long and is divided into three sections: 1-Pure Mathematics (eight questions) 2-Mechanics (three questions) 3-Probability and Statistics (two questions) All questions carry equal weight and candidates are assessed on the six questions answered. There is no restriction on choice of questions.

Where can I find out more about the STEP? The STEP has a dedicated website. This provides further information about the test, administration, guidance for centres and candidates alike, as well as specimen test materials and

additional resources for practice purposes. www.stepmathematics.org.uk
