A Matter of Inches How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond Clint Malarchuk, Dan Robson

No job in the world of sports is as intimidating, exhilarating, and stressridden as that of a hockey goaltender. Clint Malarchuk did that job while suffering high anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder and had his career nearly literally cut short by a skate across his neck, to date the most gruesome injury hockey has ever seen. This autobiography takes readers deep into the troubled mind of Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goaltender for the Quebec Nordiques, the Washington Capitals, and the Buffalo Sabres. When his carotid artery was slashed during a collision in the crease, Malarchuk nearly died on the ice. Forever changed, he struggled deeply with depression and a dependence on alcohol, which nearly cost him his life and left a bullet in his head. Now working as the goaltender coach for the Calgary Flames, Malarchuk reflects on his past as he looks forward to the future, every day grateful to have cheated deathtwice.

Summary

Clint Malarchuk was a goaltender with the Quebec Nordiques, the Washington Capitals, and the Buffalo Sabres. Originally from Grande Prairie, Alberta, he now divides his time between Calgary, where he is the goaltender coach for the Calgary Flames, and his ranch in Nevada. Fighting Back The Chris Nilan Story Chris Nilan

Chris Nilan, who grew up in the tough and gritty Irish enclave in Boston, was a feared enforcer for the Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers and a Stanley Cup champion never afraid to go into the corners or take off his gloves. He was a valued teammate whose very presence on the ice affected the way the game was played. As an enforcer and as a teammate, Nilan ranks among the greatest of all time; when the cheering stopped, however, Chris Nilan did not do well. The same qualitieshis aggressiveness and highemotion stylethat proved so valuable on the ice did not serve him well when his career ended. Nilan turned to drugs and alcohol to dull his pain and nearly died from an overdose. His story is a fascinating and troubling exposé of the booze, bills, and drugs that destroy so many athletes after their careers are over. But it's also a story of triumph, as Nilan has been the victor in his fight against his demons.

Summary

Chris Nilan played right wing in 688 NHL regular season games for the Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers. He racked up more than 3,000 penalty minutes during his pro career and was the subject of the documentary The Last Gladiator. He lives in Montreal.

Keith Magnuson The Inspiring Life and Times of a Beloved Blackhawk Doug Feldmann, Cliff Koroll

Written with the full support of Keith Magnuson's wife and children, this thrilling and insightful biography pays tribute to a Chicago icon and true hockey legend. One of the most popular Chicago Blackhawks of all time, defenseman Keith Magnuson was raised on the raw, rough traditions of hockey in western Canada. He captained the University of Denver team to its second straight NCAA championship in the spring of 1969 and by autumn joined Blackhawks stars Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and Tony Esposito, becoming the muchneeded "policeman" for the team. Over the course of the next several seasons, Magnuson and the Blackhawks fell painfully short of their Stanley Cup aspirations; nonetheless, Magnuson's leadership qualities led to his being named captain of the team. On December 15, 2003, Magnuson was in Toronto riding in a car driven by former player, Rob Ramage: he was killed when the car veered over the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle. As veteran sportswriter Bob Verdi described Magnuson upon his retirement from the Blackhawks, "there have been many finer athletes in Chicago, ...

The Instigator How Gary Bettman Remade the NHL and Changed the Game Forever Jonathon Gatehouse

Two decades of lockouts, soaring ticket prices, and onice tinkering have convinced many hardcore fans that the NHL's longtime commissioner Gary Bettman is the devil in disguise, but this book examines his motivations, peels back his often prickly demeanor, and explains how he manages to lead, confound, and keep order. It details the unlikely ascension of a fatherless Jewish kid from Long Islandwho never played hockey and can barely skateto the sport's biggest job. The sevenfold increase in gross revenue during Bettman's 20year tenure as NHL commissioner makes him a business success story, and on his watch, professional hockey has also expanded far beyond its regional strongholds. By taming the NHL's famously fractious owners, all but busting its players' union, and enforcing a lawyerly discipline even on trash talk, Bettman has become a figure of almost unrivaled power in the business of sports, and this biography delves into how his influence shapes rival leagues in other countries, dictates the schedule of the Olympic Winter Games, and spills onto the ice itself.

Summary

Jonathon Gatehouse is a senior correspondent for Maclean's weekly magazine and was formerly a reporter for the National Post and Montreal's Gazette. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.

In a city known as home to some of the sporting world's biggest stars, few have ever shined as brightly as the Philadelphia Flyers' Bernie Parent, and this autobiography shares how he became one of the most sensational goalies in NHL history. The catchphrase "Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent" became ubiquitous in Philadelphia as Parent won two Vezina Trophies as the league's top goaltender, two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, and two Stanley Cup championships, but this work shows how his ontheice exploits were only a part of his amazing story. After suffering a careerending eye injury in 1979, Parent's life took a turn for the worse, a time during which he battled alcoholism and watched his marriage end in divorce. In the end, however, facing the fears that had plagued him all his life led Parent to find solace and happiness once again. In Unmasked, Parent traces his life and career from his days as a youngster learning to skate to his current role as a Flyers ambassador and public speaker. Featuring rare photos from his personal archive and accompanying text from ...

Discrimination in the NHL Quebec Hockey Players Sidelined Bob Sirois

Ever since Maurice Richard dazzled hockey fans in the 1940s and 1950s, fighting his way to hockey's summits, the issue of discrimination against Quebec hockey players has simmered on. Now an NHL veteran confirms that unless Quebec hockey players are superstars, they are less likely to be drafted than other players in Canada. Using statistics covering nearly 40 years, the discussion shatters tenacious myths such as those claiming that Quebecois players are physically smaller, play poor defensive hockey, and only serve as the best goalies. Looking for solutions, this account proposes a new NHL team for Quebec City and a Quebec national junior team for international events.

Summary

Bob Sirois played hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals, earning 212 points in 286 NHL games and representing the Washington Capitals in the 1978 All Star Game. "The Stanley Cup represents what hockey players work for all their lives," stated Mark Messier, a six time Stanley Cup champion. "And while the greatest hockey players in the world dream of raising the Cup over their head, there is also real magic when true hockey fans get to experience the Cup." In Travels with Stanley, the Keepers of the Cup chronicle some of their extraordinary adventures encountered with hockey's greatest trophy, the Stanley Cup, using never seen before photography along with stories that inform as well as entertain.

Thunder and Lightning A NoB.S. Hockey Memoir Phil Esposito, Peter Golenbock

Phil Esposito has never been reluctant to speak his mind. At the end of his third season with the Blackhawks, Espo told coach Billy Reay and GM Tommy Ivan that they had a great team, maybe even a dynasty, but that the two would screw it up. Perfectly Espo. He pulls no punches on those Chicago days, his recordsetting time with the Bruins, his abrupt trade to the Rangers and all the hard work and heartache behind founding the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was in Boston that Esposito flourished, establishing new benchmarks for greatness. In the 196869 season he became the first player in NHL history to record at least 100 points, recording 126 (49 goals, 77 assists). He led the NHL in goal scoring four times while with the Bruins, including the incredible 197071 season when he scored 76 goals in 78 games. In eight full seasons with Boston, Esposito scored at least 100 points six times while helping lead Boston to two Stanley Cup championships. In the middle of his ninth season in Boston, Esposito was traded to the New York Rangers, where he played until his final season during the 198081 campaign. Esposito skated in 10 NHL AllStar games and was enshrined in Hockey's Hall of Fame in 1984. Esposito w...
