IP PROPOSAL

The proposal for my IP project is shown above, this is an important starting point to my portfolio down to the fact that it’s what is proposed to be done by the end of this portfolio and to not only give you an insight of what to expect but to show starting thoughts and hopefully progress with a journey of work.

Individual flair and design elements are important throughout the design industry and are vital for the independent practice for semester two, year one. The question is will the expectation lead to a forthcoming design outcome that has both sematic and face value? Or will it be one that gets lost in translation with an outcome that takes part of active failure and will expand into finding new ways an idea or even a concept?

Reading into independent practice this semester has not only been easier due to reflection on what was done last time, but enabled me to get a grasp of a field study that I would mainly look into which is; typography. Typography enables a vast audience across the word to commute not only through a typeface but a visual image, which can be referenced globally. Creating such experimentation in such little time may be disjointed at times but could lead to a great flow of graphic design in the forthcoming future.

Furthermore, looking into more hands on techniques such as letterpress or even broadening this by using the laser cutter with illustrator to create own typefaces and explore this further will enable me to understand design works to a vast audience and will be explored much more thoroughly in the forthcoming months.

Although this may be challenging at first, the best way for me to progress and learn through the independent practice is to divulge into live briefs and enter them to get a grip on what work should be processed outside of university but also adding to a skillset that will enable me to progress and develop skills that may not have been explored before.

A good point of reference would be “the message” of what is trying to be communicated into graphic design. Would it enable me as an individual to research thoroughly and clearly an outcome with idea backing or would the excitement of the whole process clog the real idea up of what the design was meant to be originally. Who knows?

Design research from the early 1900s to the present day will enable me to support my evidence and also broaden my knowledge on the history of designers throughout these times.

Taking into depth what has been also said during classes, I will also be exploring moving image as a small topic to not only progress in what industry we are all following to work in but as the internet is changing every day so is graphic design and we are always looking for a way to further our knowledge and newer technology which is being brought out to further this. This will enable new software skills and finding out ways such as creating clean cut products or even the juxtaposition of objects from an abstract point of view.

Looking into the basics of scheduling and deadlines are important as a designer to think of and should be realistic of how a client would want to see a project advance. Would the points of Consultation, Creation, Production and Delivery be a good way of handing over work?

Only time will tell.

D&AD - MINISTRY OF SOUND RESEARCH

Taking out some of the sketches and research that was looked at in the brief was important to show the journey from A to B. The progression from developing a concept to sketching out many ideas and trying to execute them within a set deadline.

The sketches are shown as blueprints to give a finer quality to the designs and allows the images to stand out much more than usual.

D&AD - MINISTRY OF SOUND IDEAS

A variety of different computer aided design ideas was the next step into pushing this brief into something that i’d be happy to enter and progress with.

The challenge was that not only was it meant to be innovative but distinctive and show bold typographic knowledge which has been explored thoroughly from sketchbook to CAD programs such as illustrator.

The main concept, that the work portrays is that the club is celebrating it’s 21st birthday around Saturday Sessions and that this had to be one of the big set goals for the D&AD pieces.

D&AD - MINISTRY OF SOUND ENTRY

Finally, the important entry for the D&AD typography brief for Ministry of Sound. This brief encouraged me and developed my skill set on illustrator from using paragraph and character styles to learning how to stick to deadlines and encourage a range of ideas which was shown earlier throughout the portfolio.

Looking into the designs on the next three pages as the posters are meant to be in A2 size they have been scaled down to fit inside an A3 portfolio and put on full bleed so it will give a realistic finish of what they were intended to be.

STICKERS - IDEAS AND CONCEPTS

The importance to get the ideas and concepts right for the stickers was very important and involved a thought out idea process which then leads to concepts and other experimental ideas.

From these sketches you will see different methods tested from completely whacky and fun design such as the ‘fish’ sticker background down to the simplistic and modern design in block colours.

These are some of the ideas

and concepts that were in my

sketchbook.

STICKERS - POLISH & SHINE

The sticker designs above are all work to produce the company ‘Polish and Shine’. The work that was produced above is an easy way that this cleaning company can provide local attention by giving out stickers which is an extra PR for them.

The stickers shown on this page and the next are all created with a vision intended to be fun and exciting for an audience to engage with and allow discussion between peers.

Above are designs that were

created for a client to create a

‘buzz’ for the company ‘Polish

& Shine’

BUSINESS CARDS - IDEAS

Deciding how to start the business cards for the company ‘Polish and Shine’ were important to me as they were a way in which a company is represented.

Furthermore, the ideas are shown in a blueprint style as the conceptual designs look better and are much more easier to understand than looking at just black and white designs.

These are some of the ideas

and concepts that were in my

sketchbook.

BUSINESS CARDS - POLISH & SHINE

From the ideas and concepts that were sketched out on the earlier pages the design ideas were whacky and imaginative which allowed me to experiment with colour, shapes and type.

Looking through all the business cards, any of them would stand out but all have been shown with a safe area, trim and bleed which is shown on the key on the right hand side.

The client was happy with the design work that was produced and will be putting through an order in the following weeks after some fine tuning of designs.

WEBSITE DESIGN ONE - RICHARD MILES

Getting into website design was important for me to progress and develop my learning throughout the technological world that we live in. Designing websites is something that i’ve always had a passion for and believe if a website reflects true and good design which is easy to access then you are open to an audience.

Designing for a friend of mine was tough down to him already drawing out what layout he wanted and how he wanted it to design, so the best thing for me to do is to do two different versions which incorporated a simple colour change which one was darker and the other one was lighter.

Page 20: Independent Practice - Year One, Semester Two
Page 21: Independent Practice - Year One, Semester Two
Page 22: Independent Practice - Year One, Semester Two

WEBSITE DESIGN TWO - RICHARD MILES

After designing this lighter version for the website and comparing it to the darker version it was a clearly up to the client to pick his favourite choice.

The lighter version which is shown above and on the next two pages was a clear winner down to a preferred colour palette of greys, whites and blues. This was because it gave the website a modern twist and wouldn’t distract a viewer away from Richard’s designs.

LAB WEEK - 2012

Page 26: Independent Practice - Year One, Semester Two

LAB 2012 - HTML WORKSHOP

Exploring the HTML workshop allowed me to test out something that i’ve personally always wanted to try but never had the experience to code or attempt at doing so.

As seen earlier in my portfolio, the work presented for website design was important to me but this workshop allowed me to learn the basics of code such as html and css which has furthered my development in hopefully being able to code websites in the near future.

www.html.gdnm.org was the

website in which all individuals

who participated were joined

to on the GDNM blog

LAB 2012 - DESIGN YOUR OWN T-SHIRT

During the twenty four hour work in an opportunity was given to create your own t-shirt. The t-shirt that was created in the lab is shown on this page.

Shamefully it was not printed due to screens being full of designs already but the importance of attending the Lab showed me new methods of working as going with a more simplistic t-shirt with the quote ‘make me think’ allowed me to think outside the box and create something that held a strong message from the twenty four hour sit in.

WORKSHOP - EMBOSSING AND DEBOSSING

From the embossing and debossing workshop, learning the skill and craft of how individuals in the industry emboss and deboss work such as books, poster designs and much more helped me understand how designers add the extra touch to their work which will help me in the future in further design work.

As you can see on the next page a larger scale of the designs that were created for this workshop .

WORKSHOP - LETTERPRESS

During Lab week, being able to attend workshops that were beneficial and aided me with older techniques than just using computer aided design programs was very important in furthering my development on the graphic design course.

Learning letterpress has given me new found confidence with typography and the work displayed above is the work that was made in the workshop.

These were the prints created

and then photographed in the

LAB 2012 - LOW TECH MAGICAL TYPE

Exploring a much more hands on approach to typography using quink ink aided me to get a feel for different approaches to hands on typography.

As shown above, using old newspaper with the quink ink allowed me to get a different feel than to normal writing methods such as just with a normal pen and paper.

EVALUATION - INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

During the Independent practice unit at UCA Epsom, I have been able to look at my favourite subject, which is typography. Looking at typography not only excites me but challenges me in so many ways that I can possibly think of from creating new typeface to creating a series of typographical poster designs.

Typography has always been not just a hobby but also a passion of mine and I cannot wait to explore ways in which enables me to grasp the idea of beginning to be a typographer.

From this subject, I have not only created work that is eye catching and distinctive such as the typographical poster design which was entered into the D&AD student awards, which allowed me to progress and reflect on the creative strategy of staying committed to my work to make it not only better, but to have a more refine through illustrator which enabled me to use a stronger typefaces such as Univers, Datatrash.

Embracing typography as a sole subject enabled me to try out new ways of laying out typography through grid layouts in InDesign and illustrator which enabled me to get the best out of what I’ve done and something I’m personally proud of.

During Lab week, compared to my last portfolio I developed and looked at much more into it as this is something that I learnt from the feedback sheet from my last one and thought it was a vital part to me completing a much more rounded portfolio. The most positive thing about my portfolio I believe is my D&AD brief, not only because it was a live brief and allowed me to develop a concept in such a little time but also allowed me to enter some of my typographical work into an awards based show.

Furthering on my development, I looked into much more hands on processes and techniques such as letterpress and embossing and debossing down to the fact that I found it not only interesting but something I’ve set out to do since my last portfolio. This enabled me to develop a hand’s on approach to typography and allowed me to progress with something that I’ve wanted to do for a long while.

My proposal for the next independent practice for the next year is to look more into the idea of shock graphics and to progress this with typographical layouts and concepts which allow me to study a field in which I’m passionate in and hope to go into.
