Best WishesWe regretfully announce Chef Joe Simon’s resignation from HWCC.I do know and have seen how well regarded Joe is with the membershipand staff. Joe’s solid, consistent product was one of the very reasonsthe club succeeded this past year. Chef has contributed a great dealto the accomplishments of the Food and Beverage Department andthe overall achievements of the Club.

His new position will be the Corporate Chef for a large cateringcompany in Rockford that does private events and services, over3,000 meals a day. It is a fabulous opportunity and Chef won’tknow what to do with the extra 2 hours a day of non-driving time!We wish him the very best future.

Family Day

Lesson TeeThis month’s golf tip comes from Head Golf Professional, Eric Aldrich.Eric discusses the importance of a proper grip in the full swing.

The grip connects the golf club (a.k.a. tool) to the body, so the gripis vital to a consistent and powerful shot. It has been proven thatthe majority of the power in the golf swing comes from the wristshinging and unhinging. Now I am not suggesting that you developa ‘wristy’ swing, but I will tell you that a proper wrist hinge will getyou more distance. And the easiest way to get a proper wrist hingeis to make certain you are gripping the club correctly.

Let’s think of the golf club as a hammer much like the aforementioned‘tool’. If I were to hand you a hammer and ask you hit a nail into aboard, how would you hold the hammer? How would you swingthe hammer? One would assume that you would hold the hammerin a way that would give you the most leverage to maximize yourpower. One would also assume that you would swing the hammerin a vertical fashion to maximize the force. This is exactly the samewhen swinging a golf club; you want to maximize your power bymaximizing the leverage you have on the club. Next time you arepracticing, grip the club in your left hand (if you are right-handed)in a way that would grip a hammer. Next, feel the leverage you haveon the club? Is it the most you can get? If not, make an adjustment. This little tip will create more power in the swing. Contact ourprofessional staff with any questions about how to better improveyour game!

Follow ThroughOne of the most common things that you will notice when watchingprofessional tennis is the consistency and accuracy of their shots. As viewers, we tend to watch the ball as it amazingly hits areas ofthe courts that as players we wish we could. More informative, however, is not the ball but the consistency with which they swingthe racquet on their ground strokes.

It seems very logical to focus our attention on the point in space wherethe racquet makes contact with the ball. Although very important, more important is what the racquet does after contact. The followthrough will determine the spin and flight of the ball. In today’smodern game, the follow through on a forehand and a two-handedbackhand should bring the racquet across the body and over theopposite shoulder. This has the advantage of creating natural topspinwhich becomes increasingly important with higher shot speeds.

Traditionally, the straight follow through was used and taught tomany players. Unfortunately, through the evolution of the game ithas been discovered that a straight follow through actually flattensthe stroke and the ball flight which increases the level of risk withevery shot.

Another advantage of going across the body is that by bending thearm more muscles fire which connects to the main trunk of yourbody. The end result is more ball speed with less racquet speed, thus adding to the control of your shot.

It is much easier to control the angle of the racquet at slower racquethead speeds, accelerating only through contact.

The tennis staff would be happy to assist you further with your gamedevelopment. For more information please call the Fitness Desk at847-847-3264.

Keep Your Cool: Wear SunscreenIf you are thinking of running the Death ValleyCentury Race mid-August, but are afraid thatsunscreen will make you retain heat, thinkagain. Researchers at the University of Vermont,Burlington, have found that wearing sunscreendoesn’t impair the body’s ability to dissipateheat. The researchers were interested instudying the potential effects of water andsweat-resistant sunscreens on the body’s abilityto dissipate heat. They theorized that the sameproperties that make these products resistwater and sweat may also lead to decreasedheat loss.

Twenty-two men underwent two 40-minuteexercise tests, once with a full-body applicationof sunscreen and once without. Environmentalconditions, clothing and workload werereplicated during each individual’s tests. Meanskin temperature (MST), rectal temperature, oxygen consumption and heart rate duringexercise were measured. Only mean skintemperature appeared to be impacted bythe introduction of sunscreen. Initially, theapplication of sunscreen significantly reducedthe mean skin temperature during exercisein the heat. But, according to researchers, this effect occurred in the first few minutesfollowing application. After that, MST valueswere similar in both treatment conditions.

Researchers could not determine a solidexplanation for this effect, and suggest furtherstudy. They did theorize that the enhancedcooling could be due to evaporative propertiesof alcohol and water contained in the sunscreen.Or, possibly, the same characteristics of theproduct that make them water resistant couldlead to more moisture being trapped at theskin surface.

Swimming Tips: Take A Refresher CourseYou may think you know how to swim the crawl because you learned many yearsago, but are you doing it right? Do your hands trace an “S” pattern through the water?Do you kick from the hips, not the knees? Can you breathe on alternate sides? Whatabout the other strokes? The point is, swimming is a skill that involves hand entry, catch, pull, exit and recovery, plus kicking and breathing! A few lessons can reallymake a big difference in how you benefit.

Interval Training Makes You Faster, StrongerTry interval training to perk up your workouts and boost your fitness. You can choosefrom many plans and schemes, but basically, break down that mile you usually swiminto a series of wind sprints, followed by brief rests. To get started, swim five lengthsas fast as you can, then rest 15 seconds, then swim another five lengths. Keep restingand repeating until you’ve done 10 sets. Make a game of it. Alternate easy lengthswith fast lengths. Be aware of working your muscles against the resistance of thewater. Be playful and have fun!
