During summer I like to wear shorts but fi nd that the catheter drainage bag shows. Are there smaller bags that won’t show? There are drainage bags that can be worn under shorts. Sometimes bags with minimal tubing or a direct inlet will suit depending on the length of the shorts.We’re taking our mum on a 2-week holiday interstate. She has dementia and wears pull-ups, but at times still wets the bed. At home we use a bed pad, but I’m wondering what to do when we’re staying at a motel?There are a number of large disposable bed pads available, which would be suitable to use while on holidays. They’re available in various sizes and capacities including a single bed tuck-in style.I’ve cut back the amount of fl uid I drink so that I don’t have to go to the toilet as often, especially if I’m going out. Is this okay? If you cut back on fl uids your kidneys will produce concentrated urine, which can be an irritant to the bladder, and you may need to go to the toilet more frequently. Restricting your fl uid intake can result in constipation, which may also contribute to bladder problems.
1. Drink plenty of good fl uids (water is best) as air conditioning is dry and dehydrating.
2. Avoid bladder irritants such as coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate drinks, and fi zzy soft drinks or sweet sports drinks — they might affect you even more than at home. Spicy or acidic foods, like citrus or tomatoes might be best avoided too.
3. Take along a wash kit plus a change of clothing.4. Eat light so you won’t feel uncomfortable,
bloated or queasy as your digestion and body clock can be upset with long travel distances.
5. Be prepared for constipation, vomiting or tummy upsets — talk to your doctor about medicines to take away with you.
6. Stretch and walk as much as you can to help with both circulation and digestion.
