SONGS TO VALENTINA
MUSIC
How is it being an exponent of music made in Manchester, a city associated with The Smiths, for example?
Interview | A m i d a by Talita Lima (Music blogger from Brazil)
John Ammirati: There is a kind of vaporous prestige to it. But Manchester is a city very much in love with its past, and local legend has it that music died with the close of the Hacienda in 1997.
What do you think about the way bands share their music in these days? With the web, the social media... did everything become easier?
John Ammirati: Does anyone doubt that the internet is a total gift, for bands and other narcissists? Couple that with home-recording and life almost seems worth living.Do you feel more influenced by indie and britpop from the 90s or from the 2000s?
John Ammirati: I think we all squirm a little bit at the word “indie”, because it’s synonymous with so many awful bands and bad haircuts. But there’s a lot to love from the past few decades. Though I think being obviously influenced by your con-temporaries is a major faux pas.

It’s easy to note that many of your songs have not even two minutes... com-ment on this.
John Ammirati: We usually don’t know how long the songs are until we record them, and we high-five each other when we have a song that’s longer than 2 min-utes. One day we’ll release a 4 minute song, I swear to God. I swear to Christ.
