Athletes from around 205 Olympic teams and 170 Paralympic teams from all over the world will take part in the London 2012 Games.

These athletes will:

Peace and friendshipAthletes and spectators will put aside their differences and conflicts – even if their countries are at war.

They will relax, eat and socialise together in the Athletes’ Village.

New friendships will be made.

The Olympic Truce… sports bring the world together

Athletes and spectators will be able to enjoy the Games in peace.

They will be able to travel to and from the events safely.

This hasn’t always been the case…

Origins of the Olympic Truce

• The Truce can be traced back to the Ancient Games in Greece

• Many regions were at war and it was dangerous to travel to the Games

Truce at the Ancient Olympic GamesIn 884 BC a treaty was signed

by the rulers of three regions in Greece, calling for a ‘truce’ during the Olympic Games.

The Truce meant athletes and spectators could travel to and from the Games safely.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games really will be bringing the world together in a spirit of peace, hope and friendship.
