BHS: The AssignmentTrouble recruiting/retaining certified coding
professionals, coding efficiency problems (coders wanted to work remotely) Separate team of coders for each of the 4 hospitals
at BHSWorkload fluctuations caused
backlogs/overtime during busy periods, but underutilized staff during slower times
Spent significant time, resources, and money on these ongoing problems

BHS: The Resolution
Design and Implement a Remote Coding Policy
Create a System Centric, rather than facility centric team
Implement a coding platform that offers modules for coding and management of process and people
![Page 12: Increasing Coding Quality Productivity_Precyse_2010](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062503/58f2524e1a28abe1558b45c5/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

BHS: The ResolutionRemote Coding
Ability to move the coding team offsite, allowing them to work remotely, via an automated coding platform
Guidelines for remote coding were created and communicated Clear accountability for workloads Deadlines must be met

BHS: The ResolutionSystem Centric Team
Centralized all coders to one teamSharing of resources and managing the entire
healthcare systems needs became possibleManagement is able to virtually oversee the
staff, workload, and processes more effectively

BHS: The ResolutionImplement a Coding Platform
• PrecyseCode with the PrecyseNet Platform• Single view of record, including hybrid forms• Coding tools available in one comprehensive software application• Increased productivity reduces the average amount of time to code
a case• Improved accuracy assures consistent and optimized coding • Maximize coder skill set with auto assignment functionality of
records driven by coder's profile helping the coder to be successful• Assists with transition to ICD-10

BHS: The Results
Business Problems Impact of Implemented Resolutions
1. Variability in coders skill level, accuracy, and efficiency Coder productivity improvement
2. Coding accuracy audits and payor audits Reduce audit costs –10% reduction
3. Quality coders supply is low Improved recruiting and retention
4. Diversity in PHI systems and processes Reflected in coder productivity – 20% increase
5. Clinical documentation improvement and concurrent review
Increased revenue 0.25% (better information, more accurate coding)
6. ARRA funds and EHR adoptionDelivers structured, coded data and outputs for EMR and facilitates linkage to ambulatory care settings
7. Electronic discreet data capture and tagging
Tags and indexes the discreet PHI for future analytics

BHS: The ResultsThe Employees
Telecommuting has improved morale, teamwork, loyalty: One of the most surprising results is how much the
teamwork has improved since the coders moved off-site.
Coders are more engaged and communicative, they solve their problems together and work as a cohesive team, and we can oversee their efforts remotely, so employees don’t feel like we’re looking over their shoulders micromanaging them

BHS: The ResultsRegulatory Readiness
Through a system-centric team, BHS is better positioned for the ICD-10 conversion.
By utilizing the automated coding platform, BHS has improved the quality of documentation specificity in preparation of ICD-10 conversion
By using the automated coding platform, BHS is better positioned to track specific meaningful use criteria.
