NZ Most LovedA i r N e w Z e a l a n d w o n t o p international airline online at the TAANZ NTIAs on the weekend, but it seems it isn’t just a favourite of the travel industry—it’s also been voted one of the country’s most-loved brands in the Colmar Brunton 2016 Brands I Love rankings. Air NZ came third in the rankings, behind Whittaker’s and the All Blacks. Col-mar Brunton surveyed 1000 Kiwis for the results.
Hefty Hummus BillThe Israeli Foreign Ministr y is searching for a group of eight Chi-nese tourists who spent more than USD4000 at a popular Israeli hum-mus restaurant. A tour operator publicised the bill, saying the restau-rant owner was taking advantage of tourists; but the owner has said the charges were fair, considering they ordered expensive alcohol and he had to close down part of the restaurant.
World’s Busiest AirportsH a r t s f i e l d - J a c k s o n A t l a n t a International Airport has again been named the world’s busiest airport, with some 101 million passengers passing through last year, according to Airports Council International’s just released 2015 World Airport Traffic Report. Beijing was again second with 89.9 million passengers, while Dubai was third, and also handled the most international traffic. According to the report, worldwide passenger traffic increased 6.4% last year to almost 7.2 billion.
House of Travel has been named the country’s top agency brand for the fourth year in a row—and says it’s a notable achievement in a year when the business was preparing to undergo some serious changes.HoT won Best Travel Agency Brand at the TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards in Auckland on Sat night, an evening described by TAANZ chief executive Andrew Olsen as a ‘tremen-dous success and highly entertaining’.HoT was thrilled to take the award for the fourth year running, says market-ing director Ken Freer.“2015 was a big year for us in terms of both growth and rejuvenating our business—the entire year was about an inside-out journey of reinvent-ing our organisation to be customer obsessed,” he says. “While our brand
launch did not take place in our last fi-nancial year, which the TAANZ awards are judged on, a lot of the groundwork to prepare us for our new brand posi-tion was laid in 2015. It was really rewarding to have the work we have put into our business recognised at the highest level.”In an emotional tribute, HoT boss Mark O’Donnell dedicated the award to former New Plymouth owner/oper-ator Dave Churchman, who has termi-nal cancer. O’Donnell says Churchman is a ‘true Hottie who we are all think-ing of right now’.
. . . Significant EventAir New Zealand’s chief commercial officer Cam Wallace says it’s great the awards have matured into a ‘signifi-cant annual industry event’.“It under-pins the positive and engaging talent that exists in the New Zealand travel industry—and it’s great to see the industry coming together to celebrate our combined achievements.”Wallace also welcomed the new rookie of the year category. “We are as an in-dustry recognising the role the youth is going to play moving forward,” he says. “In the years to come when we move on we need to ensure that the industry is in great shape for the next generation of industry leaders and participants.”See the front cover for all the winners, and for more news and photos from the night, see pages 4, 6, 7 and 8.

Expedia TAAP reported strong trading for August with 487 different destinations booked last month. New Zealand showed the strongest growth across the most significant markets. The top TAAP destinations last month were Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Fiji, Wellington, London, Br isbane, Chr is tchurch and Los Angeles. New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong were just outside the top ten. EMEA is down 4% Year on Year compared with a 4% rise in Oceania and 1 % rise in USA bookings. It’s looking set to be a momentous year ahead for TAANZ, with the board taking on the challenge to encourage more women members to stand, while a shake-up of the voting system to ensure brokers and TMCs are better represented is also on the cards.A number of hard-hitting ques-tions were directed to the board at its annual general meeting in Auckland on Fri afternoon, with a particularly hot topic of discussion being whether or not it would take a proactive approach in getting more women on the board, following the co-opting of helloworld’s Wendy van Lieshout. And it seems it will be a key focus going forward, with outgo-ing president Peter Barlow saying he would ‘love it if we had more women on the board’. “Women are very representative of the membership, but we do need them to put their hand up to stand. . . Please ladies, get involved,” he says. Whether or not the current voting system is valid and fair in today’s travel landscape was also put to the board, with the suggestion that brokers and TMCs could be better represented; and again, it was met with compliance from the board. Although Barlow admitted it wasn’t something the board had given a lot of attention to, he says a discussion is needed, and following that, ‘there will be appropriate change’. Chief executive Andrew Olsen also backs this sentiment, saying ‘nothing is out of the question’. “Everything can be reviewed and changed, we can have that discussion,” he says. The possible introduction of an award for up and coming young leaders, in a bid to encourage young industry members to take up lead-ership positions was also discussed.
. . . The Team First Travel Group’s Andrew Bow-man was officially appointed to the role of president, as Peter Bar-low stepped down, receiving life membership in the process. House of Travel’s Mark Abbot has now stepped up to the position of vice president; while House of Travel’s Brent Thomas, First Travel Group’s John Willson and industry stalwart Neil Gestro remain on the board through until the 2017 AGM. New
to the board is helloworld’s Simon McKearney as well as HLO’s Wendy van Lieshout who was co-opted to the board.Barlow reiterated that each board member had been selected for their differing skill sets, practical work-ing knowledge and values, after questions were raised in regards to why some brands had double rep-resentation. “On this board, it’s not who you work for, but what we are doing collectively.”Pictured at the AGM on Fri is:1 TAANZ’s Andrew Bowman with Travelport’s Wendy Stanton, Rob Clark and Aaron Nagel.2 TAANZ’s Andrew Bowman, Peter Barlow and Andrew Olsen. 3 World Travellers Best Travel Hast-ings’ Bill Sheppard; Elliott World Travellers Gisborne’s Graham El-liott; and Bon Voyage Cruises’ Ge-rard Murphy.

FAA On SamsungsT h e U S F e d e r a l Av i a t i o n Administration is ‘strongly advising’ passengers not to turn on or charge Samsung Galaxy Note 7s while on board aircraft, or stow them in any checked bags. The warning follows a global recall of the device after faulty batteries caused them to catch fire or explode, prompting airlines including the Qa-ntas Group to ban passengers from charging the devices in-flight.

While he still hasn’t decided just how to use his prize ($40,000 in Air New Zealand travel) Rennie says London and South America are likely
to be on the agenda.Rennie is pictured with Air NZ’s chief commercial officer Cam Wallace, who pre-sented his long-time friend with the trophy. “Paul Rennie has been an active and serious contributor to the New Zealand travel indus-
try for a number of years and has grown a business of significant scale,” says Wallace. “It’s a pleasure to honour [Rennie’s] long-term service to the industry. And I’m sure all suppliers would agree that you’ll never walk away from a conversation with Paul wondering what he thinks.”

Adventure World has launched its largest Af-rica collection to-date, as changing habits have resulted in travellers now wanting ‘more out of their annual leave’; and they’re turning to Africa to do so. “They [travellers] want to be completely immersed in local culture, heritage and wildlife while still retaining the indulgence that comes with four- and five-star lodges, open Land Rover safaris, luxu-ry tents and sundowners drinks,” says Adventure World’s Dave Nicholson. And the brand has delivered, with its Africa, Egypt & Middle East 2017/18
brochure including a range of new itineraries through-out South Africa, Zimba-bwe, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania, as well as many best-selling itineraries and a range of lesser-known game lodges and safari ex-periences. Highlights include the new
Pioneer’s Safari in Kenya, which it says is suited for clients looking to combine two safari experiences: the wildlife-rich Masai Mara and the re-mote UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Also new for 2017/18 is the Untouched Selous and Ruaha reserve programme, which immerses travellers in two of Africa’s largest faunal reserves located in the south of Tanzania. Selous and Ruaha have some of the largest populations of elephant, buffalo and lion roam-ing their landscapes, adds Adventure World. And making a return to the collection is the ever-popular Shong-holo Express rail journey, which has been refurbished by its new own-ers Rovos Rail and now has another dining car and observation car. Win A Cruise With P&OP&O Cruises reminds agents that it is running an incentive, in conjunction with Tourism Fiji, which will see the winner, and three friends, set sail on an eight-night Fiji Encounter cruise, taking in Denerau, Suva and Dravuni Island and departing Auckland 20 Feb 2017. The more cabins sold means more entries for agents. E-mail entries to andy.bruce@ pocruises.co.nz
