  • FOREWORD

There are in New Jersey a number of Incorporated homesfor the aged to which men and women of advanced years maybeadmitted in accordance with certain conditions. Some of thehomes are for members of fraternal organizations, some formembers of certain creeds, and some with limitations as toresidence, race, and color.

An entrance fee is required for most of the homes, al-though some are entirely free and some fix the fee accordingto the financial circumstances of the applicant. The major-ity of the homes are the beneficiaries of all money andproperty belonging to the estates of persons dying in thehomes. There is no uniform policy as to burials and burialexpenses.

A good physical condition is necessary for admissionto nearly all of the homes. Exceptions in this policy arenoted in the descriptions given in the directory.

The homes for the aged included in this directory areIncorporated under Title 15, Chapter 1, Revised Statutesof 1937, as amended, and are controlled by their own boardswhich are responsible for the administration and financingof the homes.

The first section of the directory lists, by munici-paliltles in alphabetic order, incorporated homes for theaged together with their capacities, fees, and limitations,as to sex, age, color, race, residence, church, or fraternalaffiliations, that agencies and individuals may know whathomes are available for any aged persons who need institu-tional care. These homes have been approved by the StateDepartment of Institutions and Agencies after inspectionby field representatives.

In the second and third sections of the directory willbe found the county and municipal welfare houses or alms-houses in the State. The counties, through their welfarehouses, are attempting to give hospital care to the chron-ically ill and to provide homes for the dependent and agedwho cannot live in homes of their own or in homes of rela-

  • tives. Old Age Assistance makes It possible for many ofthe aged who meet the Federal and State requirements, tolive in their own homes or with relatives or in boardinghomes.

The Poor Law permits the establishment of modern welfare houses by counties or groups of counties, which seekto provide a real home for indigents and for persons whocan contribute toward their own support, to give adequatehospital care to their residents who are temporarily orchronlcally-ill, and to plan their institutional programin such a way that each resident will have the care thatwill benefit him physically and the living conditions thatwill best meet his social needs.
