The study shows “A growing economy and lower unemployment should eventually give U.S. workers a long-deserved raise (and so should rising labor costs overseas that persuade more companies to hire domestically). But improvements in technology and the ability of companies to hire locally as they chase worldwide demand are just two factors that should restrain any optimism we can keep corporate profits from gobbling up more and more of the economy. ”

There are fewer American workers today than there used to be, due to corporate profits. Now, job loss has reached news highs because companies are able to produce more with fewer workers due to new technologies, the cost of labor is lowered because of globalization, and big finance is taking over the economy.

The poor just keep getting poorer and the rich just keep getting richer, it’s a vicious

Race and Politics in Obama’s Presidency

The power and symbolism of Obama’s election is compromised by the extent to which his presidency has been shaped by white expectations and white racism.

Thoreau’s Walden vs. Carson’s Silent Spring Henry David Thoreau’s Walden

“…To front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I

came to die, discovered that I had not lived… I wanted to live deep and suck all marrow out of life… to know it by experience and to be able to give a true account of it

in my next excursion…”.

Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring

“To the bird watcher, the suburbanite who derives joy from birds in his garden, the hunter, the fisherman or the explorer of wild regions, anything that destroys the wildlife of an area for even a single year has deprived him of pleasure to which he has a legitimate right…Over increasingly large areas of the United States, spring now comes unheralded by the return of the birds, and the early mornings are strangely silent where once they were filled with the beauty of bird song . . . Can anyone imagine anything so cheerless and dreary as a springtime without a robin’s song?”

Christopher Cerovac

Silent Spring’s Impact• Book published in 1962.

• Carson started giving testimony to Congress in 1963.

• Her work helped to get DDT banned in 1972.

• Should DDT have been banned?

• Carson took lots of criticism for using “soft science.”

• “Today, millions of people around the world suffer the painful and often deadly effects of malaria because one person sounded a false alarm.”
