How the Caving Area at Jreighton Is Ventilated

Problems DifferThe main ventilation problem in the

quare-set mining area at Frood-Stobie andCreighton is to provide sufficient coolingpower to maintain good working conditionsin the stopes. ThLS has been accomplishedby circulating large volumes of air. Averagetope temperatures have been maintained

below 70F., with a relative humidity from90 to 97 per cent. In all other mining opera-tions, especially in the blasthole and cavingareas, the main problem is the quick removalof the dust and blasting fumes.

A simple upcast circulation of air Is pro-vided to ventilate all mining areas wheresquare-set, cut-and-ifil, or shrinkage meth-ods are used. In this system, the mainvolumes of fresh air are supplied to the lowerproducing levels of each mining area, withsmaller splits to the levels above.

The original system for ventilating thesquare-set area at Frood-Stobie mine pro-vided a separate flow of air through eachworking place. The present upcast systemhas many practical advantages over theoriginal system; it provides a much largervolume of air through the stopes, controlof air flow is simplified, and fewer ventilationdoors and brattices are required.

Ventilating Blasthole AreasThe blasthole stoping method has become

of major Importance in the conversion to allunderground production. At present, approxi-mately 50 per cent of the ore produced under-ground is being mined by this method.

A push-pull system is used for the ventila-Ion of all blasthole stoping areas. The mainfresh air splits are made to the slushinghorizons, with a minor volume to each drill-ing level. Return air is exhausted from theslusher drifts through a direct connectionfrom the tail-sheave end of each drift to themain return airway; the air from the drilldrifts downcasts through the stopes and theboxholes, and joins the air supplied directlyto the slusher drifts. Ventilation controlsare provided at both the intake and theexhaust connection to each drift.

Good visibility is essential for efficientslushing, and quick smoke removal avoidslost time after secondary blasting. Promexperience, to provide good working condi-tions in a susher drift the air velocity shouldbe approximately 150 feet per minute. Thevolume of air supplied is based on 10,000cubic feet per minute per operating slusherdrift, plus leakage of 2,000 c.f.m. through theaverage non-operating drift; with propercontrol the flow of air through the operatingdrifts varies from 10,000 to 15,000 cubic feetper minute.

Where the slusher drifts are just abovethe haulage drift for direct slushing intocars, the fresh air is supplied from the haul-age drift up through the drawhole and theladderway to the slusher drift.

Hundreds of heads were bowed in remem-brance of the fallen in two world wars.

In Sudbury the 36th annual ceremony wasattended by what was believed to be thelargest congregation ever to turn out onRemembrance Day. Wing Commander M.Stroud, officer commanding the Falcon-bridge RCAF unit, took the salute in themarch past of the long parade. At thecenotaph the wreath of the Silver CrossMothers was brought forward by Mrs. C. H.Buck.

At Coniston the salute in the march past

was taken by Major Bill Watt.Deep reverence and respect marked all

three services. There could be no doubtthat these men who fought and died forfreedom are remembered at the going downof the sun, and in the morning'.

Following its custom of many years stand-ing, Copper Cliff Branch of the CanadianLegion held its annual dinner the night ofNovember 11. ThIs year's affair was aparticularly auspicious one, since the branchreceived a new name, a new charter, andnew colors.

Honoring the memory of one of its mem-bers, the late vice-president and generalmanager of Inco, R. L. Beattie, the branchwill in future bear his name. A new charter

was turned over to second vice-president MelReid by Leo Troy of North Bay, regionalvice-president of the Legion's Ontario com-mand. New colors, the gift of Mrs. Beattle,were presented in a very impressive ceremonyin which the color party, led by Specs Tel-ford, was composed of four veteran mem-bers of the branch who fought in the FirstWorld War, Tom Smith, Harry Hart, WesMcNelce Sr. and Walter Van Exan. Thepresentation was made by another old-timer,Harry Cobbold, assisted by the president ofthe branch, John Robertson.

The capacity audience was addressed byClarence Campbell, president of the NationalHockey League, on the war crime trial ofNazi general Kurt Meyer.

Ventilation System FansThere are 19 fans in operation in the main

ventilation systems at the five mines, in-cludIng 11 main fans and eight booster fans.The total capacity of these fans Is 3,000,000cubic feet per minute and they draw 2900brake horsepower.

All main fans are located on surface, ex-cept the two in the system for the Creightonsquare-set area; four of the booster fans areexhaust units and two of these are on sur-face. All fan installations are fireproof, withconcrete, steel and tile throughout.

Sixteen of the main ventilating fans arehorizontal units. Although this Is a naturalfan arrangement for underground installa-tions, considerable construction work Is re-quired to install a horisontal unit on surface,particularly for an exhaust fan where a stackis required at the fan discharge. Recently,three vertical exhaust fans have been in-stalled, two 124-inch diameter and one 72-inch. In each case the impeller Is mountedon the shaft of a vertical motor and belowthe motor.

All exhaust fans are equipped with stain-less steel rotors to eliminate corrosion fromthe acid condensate. The fan hub stream-lining Is also stainless steel.

The diameter of the fans in service rangesfrom 36 to 124 inches, with the majorityfrom 72 to 98 inches.

There is a total of 87 auxiliary ventilationfans in operation, with 55,000 feet of steelventilation pipe and 2,000 feet of flexibletubing. Of these fans, 31 are driven byelectric motors and 56 are operated by com-pressed air.

A 198-in, diameter vertical fresh air fanis to be installed at surface on the collar ofthe main intake for the Stobie section of theFrood-Stobie mine. This fan Is an adjust-able pitch axial flow unit rated to handlefrom 500,000 c.f.m.

"Air Conditioning"At Murray and Levack the fresh air Is

heated with steam blast coils in the dis-chargeduct of the intake fan.

At Creighton mine the intake air for thelower mining area is drawn from surfacedown through the open pit and the footwallportion of the caved area above the old work-ings into the main intake airway, 450 feetbelow surface. There Is a large accumulationof ice in the upper footwall section of thecaved area. ThIs Is a result of a high naturalcirculation of air through the area in winter;the cold air downcasts through the pit andthe footwall workings below the pit and up-casts to surface through the caved rock atthe hangingwaii ThIs large mass of cavedrock and ice has proved to be a very efficientheat exchanger. It not only overcomes thewide range of air temperature experiencedat the other mines with direct intakes, butalso provides additional cooling power; thefresh air Is delivered to the main intake ata mean yearly temperature of 35F., or 7below the average surface temperature.

Twenty-nine new members from the NickelRefinery who had qualified by completing25 years of Inco service were welcomed tothe club and presented with their buttonsby Mr. Parker. Among them was Mrs. AliceSmiley, the second member on the distaffside at Port Colborne, the first being MissMadeline Mathews. Through the years it has always givenme a great lift to attend these meetings,meet the new members, and visit with theold-timers and the pensioners,' R. D. Parkersaid in commencing his remarks. He ack-nowledged the "grace and beauty" addedto the head table by the presence of theclub's two lady members.

"Tonight's new members represent a veryimportant era in the Company's progress,'he said, and quoted a number of figures toshow the tremendous growth which hastaken place over the past 25 years. In 1929moo in Canada had 3,102 employees, in 1953it had 18,132; in 1929 it mined two milliontons of ore, in 1953 14 million tons; in 1929it sold 160 mIllion pounds of copper andnickel, in 1953 it sold 486 mIllion pounds.In other words," Mr. Parker summed up,during the past quarter century we have

increased our payroll six times, Increased ourrate of mining six times, and increased oursales of metals three time&"

Although the Company produced and sold10 billion 236 million pounds of copper andnickel during this period, it had by diligentexploration actually increased its ore reservesfrom 202 million tons in 1929 to 261 milliontons in 1953.

The total tonnage produced from all theCompany's mines in the quarter century hewas discussing, Mr. Parker said, had been187 million tons, of which 118 million hadcome from the Frood operations alone. Thishuge tonnage, in terms of space, would berepresented by a tunnel 10 feet wide and 10feet high, reaching right through Canadafrom Halifax to Vancouver.

One way of measuring the Company's con-tribution to the Canadian economy in thesame period was by the size of Its tax bill.In 1929 its taxes amounted to $1,980,000, butby 1953 it was paying taxes at the rate of 28million dollars a year.

All these figures, Mr. Parker said, Illu-strated progress which would have been im-possible without improvements in processesand equipment. To maintain Its positionand meet the ever-growing demand for itsmetals and to continue to provide steadyemployment, the Company had to be everalert to the quality of its products and itsability to produce them. Out of its earn-ings must come money for research andimprovements which contribute to such alarge extent to our prosperity," he said.

Reviewing some of the changes which hadtaken place at the Nickel Refinery, Mr. Par-ker said he was happy to pay tribute to the"magnificent job" done by Manager R. C.McQulre and his staff in research and im-provement of operations.

A total of 5,050 years of Inco service wasrepresented at the banquet, the general man-ager had been told. He expressed his pleasureat seeing such a fine tournout of pensioners.They were gratifying evidence of the successof the Company's retirement system, whichin my opinion is unsurpassed in industrytoday." "I am proud to be associated witha company which had the foresight to setup such a plan so long ago In anticipation ofyour needs," Mr. Parker declared.

B. C. Lambert spoke on behalf of thepensioners, expressing appreciation of theenjoyable get-together provided by theannual Quarter Century Club dinner. Hementioned how glad the pensioners are toreceive the Inco Triangle, which keeps themin touch with the Company's activities, andpraised the Inco Retirement System for thecomfort and security it provides.

R. C. McQulre, manager of the NickelRefining Division, said he felt it was anhonor to be joining the ranks of the QuarterCentury Club. After acknowledging thesplendid co-operation and assistance of bothsupervision and men at the plant, he gave achronological review of events at the refineryduring the past quarter century.

The year 1929, he recalled saw construction

started on electrolytic units 5, 6 and 7 andthe completion of sinter machine installa-tions and also anode casting equipment.Shortly afterwards electrolytic units 4 5 andO were placed in operation, only to be victimsof a curtailed production program in 1931.In this year the complete shutdown of theOrford Process in Port Colborne took place,this operation being transferred to CopperCliff.

Following a 10-month shutdown the refinerywas reopened in May 1933, and some twoyears later another extensive program ofexpansion was launched in the constructionof electrolytic units 8, 9 and 10. AU of thesewere In operation by 1937, the year theRecreation Club was opened. During thenext five years two more electrolytic unitswere built and put into operation. Withinthis period the major shift from sulphateelectrolyte to the present sulphate-chlorideprocess was instituted, and completed in 1945.In the same period the new electric slagtreating furnace was placed in operation.Then followed production of the new pro-ducts, nickel oxide sinter and cobalt oxide.In 1949 the hydraulic crimping of startingsheets was developed and the necessaryfacilities were installed.

Building of the new research laboratoriesand an addition to the general office wereprojects launched in 1952 and during thenext year and a half important new installa-tions were made for filtration of nickelelectrolyte and the continuous removal ofiron slimes.

The current year to date to round out thequarter century under review, has witnessedconstruction and putting into production ofthe new process for producing electrolyticcobalt.
