A me ssa g e f r o m t he Supe r i n t e n de n t . . .A me ssa g e f r o m t he Supe r i n t e n de n t . . .Dear South Whidbey Community,

Plans are well underway to relocate students in our K-12 program. As you know our K-6

students will be in the South Whidbey Elementary School North and South Campuses. Grades K-4

will be in the North Campus and grades 5 & 6 in the South Campus. The South Campus currently

has two grade 5 classes and two South Whidbey Academy classes (K-5 Students). In September, all

grades 5 & 6 students and SWA K-6 will be located at the South Campus along with a counselor,

secretary and administrator (shared grades 5-8).

In grade 5, two teachers will teach English/Language Arts and Social Studies (ELA/SS) and two

will teach Science and Math. Half of the students will spend the morning in ELA/SS or

Math/Science and will spend the afternoon in the other area. They will also spend time in choir or

band, art and PE. Lunch will be at the North Campus for all students.

Students in grade 6 will rotate among 4 classes for ELA, SS, Science and Math. They will also

receive PE, Art, Music and have choir or band.

Students in grades 7 & 8 will be at the South Whidbey High School. They will be in a separate

corridor with a separate bell and lunch schedule from the grades 9-12 students.

The logistics of moving are in process. Unoccupied rooms are being painted and carpeted.

Technology necessary for students and staff are also being allocated and re-allocated. We are

committed to making this transition go as smoothly as possible for students and families as well as

staff. Teachers who are moving are beginning to pack and plan. Staff will have a better idea of

assignments for next year by mid April.

Please stay up to date on the transition via the website. We are looking for volunteers to assist us

with the transition. Please consider being a part of the transition and complete the online form

linked here.

Great things are in the works.

Sincerely,

Jo Moccia

Martin Luther King Assembly

Students celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King in January of this year. They participated in

singing a number of songs related to his life and to steps we can take to help improve diversity and

acceptance of all people. One of the student's favorite songs was by Sally Rogers, "What Can One

Little Person Do?" South Whidbey Elementary demonstrates the commitment to this goal on a daily

basis.

Peer Mediation

4th and 5th graders applied to a variety of leadership jobs throughout the school. One of those jobs

is being a peer mediator. Students go through extensive training with Mrs. Wallace to learn the

skills necessary to be a mediator. They must keep up on their schoolwork and often give up their

own recesses to assist their peers with minor conflicts at recess and during lunch. We are very proud

of our mediators and the hard work they put in to help their peers.

Random Acts of Kindness

Students participated in our random acts of kindness week delivering messages of kindness to their

families, to the school board, police and local volunteer EMTs and firefighters. The picture below is

of a group of 4th graders creating valentines for our troops.
