Welcome to our brochure of events for young people up to 25

All events offer fun things to do in small groups of disabled and non-disabled young people together. We think there’s something here for everyone - including those who have learning difficulties/disabilities, autism or physical/sensory impairments.

Even if you need lots of help to take part, we’ll do everything we can to welcome you. This might include help with lifting, toilets, communication, or specific access issues. Please just ask the activity provider if you are uncertain about anything.

More information about each of the organisations offering these events can be found on their own website - see the bottom of each page.

If there is an activity which you want to go on but the cost is more than you can afford, please do talk to us as we don’t want the charges to exclude anyone.

This was the first time away from

home for her. I was apprehensive

initially but I am so impressed and

will definitely refer again. Gave us

a break with our younger child

which we never got before. Her

willingness to try new things shot

through the roof. Tries more things

as a result and her ability to make

friends from a wider group has

definitely changed. Really wanted

to do everything for herself for a

long time after the event.

He has the opportunity to be

part, never allowed to join in at

school, so this is the first

residential for him. It’s great for

his self-esteem, quite huge.

He really enjoyed it and made a

friend which is extremely unusual.

They're in contact and seeing each

other regularly, massive step

forward.

First activity he's ever chosen to

do. Really made a difference. I

wanted him to want to choose to

do something - he was so excited

when I picked him up first day.

Great experience for him and for

me to see him like that.

Every young person needs to

learn to take and manage risk.

This is really important – the

provider managed the risk

extremely well. He's free to make

mistakes and try new things and

they're there for him at the

appropriate level.

She has issues with height but

she climbed up the crate stack

with a harness on and the crates

were then pushed away from

under her and she talked about

it for months. Never thought in

a million years she'd do that -

the staff gave her so much

encouragement.

What parents say …. Many parents have been understandably nervous about their children going

on their first Of Course We Can event. Others tell us that the programme

looks great but ‘wouldn’t work for my child’. Please see what other parents

have told us below – we really do think that there will be an event here that

can work for your child. We’d love to welcome new participants.

Booking a place Who can come? The Of Course We Can programme is for children and young

people aged between 5 and 25 living in Gloucestershire including those who have learning difficulties/disabilities, autism or physical/sensory impairments.

See individual events for age groups. Whilst not every event will be suitable for every young person, we

try to offer something for everyone. Do phone any event’s contact person if you want to chat about its suitability.

Of Course We Can events are not ‘daycare’. Please only book

places for children and young people who are keen to take part. Events are planned on the basis that everyone will go to all the

sessions rather than going for single days.

Disabled children and young people using a Personal Budget or Direct Payment to help meet an assessed need (following a CAF or a social care assessment) can go to one or more events. This must have been agreed as part of their plan with their lead professional /social worker, who can find more information about referring children and young people on our website at:

www.activeimpact.org.uk/guidance-for-referrers.html Other families with a disabled child/ young person can apply directly to the event contact person by phone or email. To give everyone a fair chance, please initially book only one event from this brochure. If you fancy another one, do call that event’s contact person six weeks before it starts to see if there are still any places available. Telling us what participants need from us Please chat with the event contact person as soon as you can so that they can ensure that each person will be safe, welcome and able to take part. We want to understand everyone’s particular requirements so that we can meet them properly.

Page 19: Inclusive disabled...disabilities, autism or physical/sensory impairments. Even if you need lots of help to take part, we [ll do everything we can to welcome you. This might include

19

How do you pay?

You will need to pay the full amount to the organisation running your event. Payment is due as soon as your place is confirmed. The name and details of the contact person for each organisation are given at the end of each event’s description in the brochure.

Residential events are usually more expensive. The charge is £300

where the residential event has been identified as meeting an assessed need within a Council funded plan. The charge is lower for those without an assessed need because there are fewer costs to the Council in supporting someone who is self-funding.

Names of participants are shared with the Council so that lead

professionals and social workers can see who benefits from the Council’s investment.

If you are not paying from a Personal Budget/Direct Payment and

the cost would truly make it impossible to go on the event you would like, please discuss this with the event’s contact person.

We don’t want the charges to exclude anyone. If anyone requires 1:1 or 2:1 assistance, there may be additional

costs. The costs of any additional support may also come from their Personal Budget/Direct Payment if anyone is attending as part of their agreed and funded support plan.

The Of Course We Can programme is financially

supported by Gloucestershire County Council.

Residential Breaks for Families Together

The Active Impact team are delighted to be able to extend our Of Course We Can programme this year by two new residential

weekend events offering families the chance to take a break together.

We will be inviting families with disabled children from two areas of the county to take part in one of these opportunities:

Join with the professional artists and actors of Roses Theatre and Art Shape to get creative over a weekend in the relaxing woodland space of Macaroni Wood near Cirencester. Over the weekend there will be opportunities to use the landscape to have lots of creative fun. Try your hand at den-building, land art and withy lantern making. For those who prefer to work on a smaller scale, create your own woodland creatures using natural materials. Then in the evenings socialise round the bonfire with songs and stories.

OR Explore the outdoors and experience a unique family camping event with Creative Sustainability. Bushcraft, green wood-work, eco-design, open-fire cooking and singing plus the special ‘Hawk Walk’ - meet the birds and follow them through the woods! Evenings spent round a bonfire, toasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs.

On Saturday night everyone takes part in a cabaret!

If you want more information about these sorts of family breaks,

please contact Caroline: [email protected]

This unique opportunity has been made possible by funding from The True Colours Trust and the Gloucestershire Disability Fund.
