Dear Friends,
During the Second World War a Government poster proclaimed “Keep Calm and Carry
On”, perhaps an example of the British “stiff upper lip” in adversity. In the film Carry
on up the Khyber there is the scene where the British Ambassador (played by Sid
James) gives a formal dinner party which continues as normal whilst the enemy shell the
building, and the guests make small talk as they pick lumps of plaster out of the soup.
Peter Butterworth played the British missionary who, throughout this meal, mutters to
himself “Mad, mad. They’re all mad” as the guests act as if nothing strange is happening.
But the only alternative is to panic which does no good at all.
These days it is fashionable in some circles to recommend everyone to be open to their
feelings, let the deep feelings of emotion come out. Now it is true that repressing your
emotions can be dangerous and they can suddenly well up and
cause violent behaviour. Much better to face up to them, analyse
them and set them to one side as you “keep calm and carry on”.
If you feel a need to talk to someone about your feelings you
should go and see someone, but don’t claim the right to pour out
your innermost feelings to every casual acquaintance otherwise
you will make yourself extremely unpopular.
The prophet Joel wrote “Rend your hearts and not your clothing”. What I think he was
saying was “Don’t go O.T.T” “Don’t tear your clothes in an artificial display of emotion.
Let your emotion be sincere, away from the public gaze”. No public exhibition of how
deep your feelings are. In other words “Keep calm and carry on”. Many people suffer
deeply in their lives and don’t let others know about it. As long as they have somewhere
to go where they can let go and release their feelings, this restraint is admirable.
The passage from Joel is read on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. In the forty
days leading up to Easter, we are expected to examine our thoughts and feelings, and
tell God we are sorry for the unkind things we have done, and the opportunities to be
kind and to love people which we have missed. We need to tell God we are sorry and then
to believe with all our heart and soul that he has forgiven us. If we doubt this, it may be
easier to confess to God in the presence of a Priest who is bound to confidentiality and
who will advise you and assure you of God’s forgiveness and love for you.
You can tell others that you have been forgiven but you must never tell anyone what you
have confessed, and don’t bore people with endless repetition of how you know you are
forgiven. For as the old prophet Joel said “Rend your hearts and not your garments”. In
other words “Keep calm and carry on”.
God bless you.
Your Priest and Friend,
Edward Ward

FROM THE EDITOR
Our first front cover of 2015 features three pictures (left) of the Advent
Children’s Workshop held in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond on 6th December. It
was a very popular morning and the pictures show how busy and creative the
children were. On the right is a snapshot of St Peter’s Church Choir singing “We
wish you a Merry Christmas” for the congregation after the Carol Service on 17th
December.
The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover the month of
March 2015 and the deadline for contributions is Sunday, 1st February – an
early deadline so make sure you don’t overlook it! Please deliver your
contributions in good time to me at the address on the inside front cover – or
you can email them to me at [email protected]. I’m always delighted to
receive your photos too (preferably by email), especially ones of people, places
and events which take place in and around our villages.
Don’t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the village and
church websites (addresses on the front cover).

ASH WEDNESDAY
This year Ash Wednesday falls on Wednesday February 18th. Ash Wednesday marks
the start of the season of LENT and is regarded by all Christian denominations as a
major Day of Obligation, that is, a day when all Christians should try to attend Holy
Communion and receive the sacrament. This year there will be two celebrations of
Holy Communion in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond: in the morning at 9.30 am (BCP) and
evening at 7.00 pm (CW), both of which will include the ancient and scriptural
ceremony of Ashing.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and is the day on which
traditionally Christians went to make their confessions and be shriven (absolved) of
their sins. If anyone wishes to make their confession, please contact the Rector in
order to make an appointment.
LENT
Every life has both good times, happy times, high times as well as bad times, sad
times, low times. Every year has its winter season as well as spring and summer. And
so it is with the Church’s year; it has its high times as well as its low times. And it
reminds us (as it is based upon the events in Our Lord’s life) that Jesus experienced
both bad times as well as good.
The season of Lent begins this month and it is a season of preparation for Easter.
The forty days of Lent commemorate the forty days when Jesus was in the desert,
learning to resist the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil. And we, as
his followers, are encouraged to try to practise self-discipline during this season.
The altar frontal and vestments are solemn purple and there are no flowers, all in
order to emphasise the solemnity and sadness of Lent. And we have to go through
Lent so that we can enjoy the joy of Easter all the more.
SUNDAY AFTERNOON SERVICE
Last year several people asked about the possibility of holding a service on a Sunday
afternoon, as they find a morning service too early for them because of age or other
infirmities. So now we hold regular services of Holy Communion on the third Sunday
of the month at 3.30 pm in St Peter’s, Edgmond, to see if that may be of help to
people. It means that it will still be light enough both to get to church and return
home. The next afternoon service will be on Sunday, February 15th.

CHRISTMAS THANKS
As most of you know I was laid low this Christmas with the flu and so, for the first time in 42 years of active ministry, I did not celebrate Christmas at the altar. I must thank all those who stepped in at extremely short notice in order to lead the Christmas services. One of the things I have been trying to create in our six parishes is a structure in which if you remove one prop, the whole thing does not collapse. And I’m pleased to say that we managed to carry on without having to find extra ministers from outside.
We must also express our thanks to the Flower Guild for their beautiful decorations in church; to Colin (our Director of Music and Choir Master) and all St Peter’s Choir for their support, hard work and attendance at the extra services (I don’t think that the community realises the high quality our Church Choir possesses: there aren’t many Town Choirs to equal ours); thanks to Edric and the Bell Ringers for their hard work and faithfulness in ringing for all the extra services; thanks to the Servers, the Churchwardens, Sidespeople, and all those who provided us with mulled wine and mince pies.
Thanks too to Stephanie and her gang who so ably organised the Christingle Service yet again. It was its usual successful self, although I gather that several children were disappointed that the Rector wasn’t there with his new Christmas hat! Never mind! you can see it next Christmas – or perhaps the Rector will have purchased yet another one!

COFFEE & CHAT
The next Thursday Coffee Morning at St Peter’s Church will be on
February 19th following the 9.30 am Holy Communion Service. You don’t
have to attend the service to be able to have a cup of coffee. Just
turn up at the church at about 10.00 am or thereabouts, and join us for
coffee (or tea) and a chat. We shall look forward to seeing you.
THE CHILDRENS’ ADVENT WORKSHOP This took place on December 6th in St Peter’s Church with approx 40 children attending. The morning started with some carol singing and finished with suitable prayers delivered in the Rector’s inimitable style. In between these, the children were able to take part in making all sorts of different things connected with Advent and the approaching Christmas, including some posters which went up in church.
Very many thanks to Jane and Julia who organised the whole thing and to all their helpers.
THE CHRISTINGLE SERVICE 2014
The Christingle Service on Christmas Eve was another packed event. Thank you to
everyone for their donations - just over £600 was raised for the Children Society.
In addition to this we had a large amount of presents donated which were taken to a
local refuge where they were most gratefully received.
Thank you also to all those who helped behind the scenes both before and after the
service and to Celeste, Olivia and Lucy who took part in the service. A special thanks
must be given to Phil who at very short notice led the service due to the Rector
being too poorly.
If there any young people who would like to help with the organisation of the
Christingle in 2015 please let me know. Preparation for the service starts a few
months before the event and it could be a good opportunity for someone needing
voluntary experience, for example the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme or just
wanting experience in arranging a large community event. If you think you would be
interested in helping before or at the service please get in touch with me on the
contact details below.

THE FRIENDS OF ST PETER’S CHURCH EDGMOND
The Friends of St Peter’s Church committee would like to wish all readers of the
parish magazine a very Happy New Year!
Thank you to all who have completed a membership application form to become a
‘Friend’ of St Peter’s Church. We are very grateful for your support. We continue to
be pleased with the way the people have embraced this initiative which will enable
the work needed to keep our beautiful Church of St Peter’s and the churchyard in
good repair and condition to be enjoyed for generations to come.
The PCC has approached the Friends committee to help with the costs of essential
repairs to the gate at the Pipers Lane entrance to the Churchyard. We have
purchased the two gateposts that have replaced the old ones that had rotted. This
is the first purchase that the Friends have made.
The Friends supported a very successful Children’s Advent workshop on the 6th
December. Forty children attended this event and made Christmas bags, cards and
angels to take home. They also turned their teddies into Santa, and contributed
towards making a giant Christingle and various collages that decorated our Church
during the Christmas time.
We will be organising and supporting various events during 2015 and you will find
information and updates in the Parish magazine and in the Village shop. We are
planning a wine and cheese evening soon and a number of concerts. Also, we will be
responsible for one of the Sunday services which everyone is welcome to attend.
If you would like to volunteer to help the Friends with any activities we would be
very pleased to hear from you. Or if you would like more information about the
Friends of St Peter’s Church please do not hesitate to contact us.
Finally, one of our committee members was taken ill on New Year’s Eve – we would
like to wish John Ingram a speedy recovery.

THE GALLERY SINGERS
The Gallery Singers’ Concert, given in St Peter’s Church on Sunday, December 7th, has produced an amount of £800.00+ for the church.
The church was full – to the extent that people who had not bought their tickets prior to the concert had to be asked to wait until those who had purchased them were seated first (because of Health & Safety issues).
Thanks are due to Sara for her ongoing publicity, to Chris for all the practical assistance, to Wayne Travas and Matthew – two students who collected the wine, glasses and mince pies – and to Jan and Pauline, who served well over 140 people with mulled wine and mince pies – not an easy thing to do from our tiny kitchen!
A magnificent result! P Westgate
On Thursday 12th February at 2.15 pm in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond, we will be holding our Annual General Meeting. Everyone is most welcome. For further information and/or help with transport please contact Margaret Matthews on 825976.
EDGMOND RURAL COMMUNITY INITIATIVE
By the time you read this, it is hoped that the village will be equipped with its own Defibrillator. It will normally be located within its own Security Box, sited on the outside of the Village Hall. There should also be a trained team of local volunteers, ready and willing to be called out when its use is required.
Because the project is still a “work in progress”, a great deal more about this will be published in next month’s magazine. This will include acknowledgments for the great deal of help received by ERCI with this project.

Next Meeting: Tuesday 17 February Speaker - The Reverend Lynne Morris Subject - "Are you free next Friday, Vicar?" The funny side of being a lady Vicar!
All meetings are held at the Royal British Legion Club in Audley Road, Newport, commencing at 2 pm. Visitors are welcome.
Admission is £1 which includes refreshments.

PARISH WARDEN’S REPORT
As I write, I do not have the reported crime figures for the village to cover the period since the last magazine.
Unfortunately, I have to advise that one of “our” PCSO’s – Heather Clews – has left her job. She will always be remembered by me as being a very pleasant and helpful person. Latterly, she worked with the Newport Local Police Team but still came out to Edgmond when she could to represent West Mercia Police at, for example, Neighbourhood Watch meetings and the Annual Village Audit. Formerly, she worked with our now retired Rural Beat Officer – Dave Hancocks - and another CSO, as they were known at that time, Sue Upton. Without their help on the Edgmond Rural Community Initiative (ERCI) Committee, the village might well not have its Multi Use Games Area, or the improved Younger Children’s Play Area.
She will be missed, and I am sure you would want to join me in wishing her all the very best for the future.
John Keeping (813125)
EDGMOND VILLAGE HALL
The Committee are delighted to announce that the village hall has been awarded a £95,000 grant as part of Telford and Wrekin’s Community Pride Fund. This fantastic grant will enable us to drive forward plans to refurbish the hall and add a new Field Room. Initials plans for this work were discussed and supported by the village at our open meeting in November. We are currently developing more detailed plans for this work which we will present to the village for further discussion as soon as we can.
Our Christmas Fair was a great success making £900. This brings our fundraising total for the last six months of 2014 to a fantastic £6,000. We would like to thank everyone who has supported these events and made them such a success.
Dates for your diary:
Our first village cinema screening will take place on Sunday 25th January at 17.30. Entry will be free with optional donations to village hall refurbishment funds. Refreshments will also be available. Please see the website for details of all future screenings.
March 15th – ‘Lost the Plot’ a live band with lots of audience participation. Supper included. Full details to follow.
April 18th – ‘Gabriela’ musical fun with Gabriela and her Ukelele. Supper included. Full details to follow.
Afternoon teas will recommence in April and there will be a Spring Fair in May. Please check the website for further details: www.edgmondvillagehall.org.

News & Reports from Edgmond Parish Council www.edgmondparishcouncil.co.uk
Thank you to everyone for keeping your Parish Council informed of your views regarding the possible developments within the Conservation Area of the village.
For clarification, the land off Shrewsbury Road has been put forward through a pre-application consultation by the landowner and agent for a residential development. Advance Planning has undertaken the consultation direct with the community and Mr Andy Williams welcomes the views of the local community. At this time, an application has not been submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council.
There are, however, a number of planning applications currently under consideration within the consultation period and these include the application TWC/2014/1132 for 9 dwellings to the rear of Provost’s House.
It is important that local people register their views on the telford.gov.uk website. All comments are taken into consideration. If you do not have access to a computer or email facility, you can write direct to the Planning Officers and your correspondence will be uploaded onto the website on your behalf.
Thanks also to those of you who have cleared vegetation away from street lighting. It really makes a big difference!
The next full meeting of the Parish Council will be on 9th March at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.

BRIDGE PROBLEM OF THE MONTH – SOLUTION (from previous page) Bidding - East and West pass throughout. South opens 2 Clubs (23+ points), North bids 3NT (point count). South goes to 6NT – simple!
The contract looks good – eleven tricks are certain – the final twelfth trick can come from either the Heart finesse (50% chance) or the long Spade – if they divide 3/3 (30% chance). But which of these two options should you try first?
Regardless of the odds favouring the Heart finesse, you should test the Spades first. But how? If you lead Ace, then King of Spades you could set up two – or more – Spade winners for the opposition. So, why not duck a Spade first – low cards from each hand? Then, lead Ace and King of Spades and …. success! Even if this has failed you could still try the Heart finesse. Either way, this is your best chance of 12 tricks – small slam made – score 1440 points. Not bad!
