There are two types of hand controls available forthe UVL - the standard hand-held control switchbox,or the optional remote control. Both types ofcontrols are equipped with four push-buttonswitches. The functions activated by both types ofcontrols are the same. The switch functions arelabeled. The function of each switch is describedbelow.

Remote Control Note: The effective range of theremote control is 20 feet. A range further than 20feet does not allow an attendant to observe andassist the lift passenger.

Control Switch Functions:

UP: From the stowed position, the LIFT UP functiondeploys (extends) the platform fully. The platformthen raises to floor level height and moves inward tothe vehicle floor level position (if applicable). Note:When the lift is in the stowed position, power doorsautomatically open when the UP switch is pressed(if so equipped).

From ground level, the LIFT UP function will firstautomatically raise (rotate) the outboard roll stop tothe upright (vertical) position. Note: The lift will notraise if the roll stop is not in the UP position (built-insafety feature). The platform then raises to floorlevel height and moves inward to the vehicle floorlevel position. Note: UVL600 and UVL600X liftmodels move inward to floor level position with an“arcing” motion. UVL850 Series lift models do not.

DOWN: The LIFT DOWN function lowers theplatform to ground level (regardless of the positionof the platform) and then unfolds the outboard rollstop to the ramp (horizontal) position. From thestowed position, the lift will extend and then lower.Note: When the lift is in the stowed position, powerdoors automatically open when the DOWN switch ispressed (if so equipped).

STOW: The STOW LIFT function raises or lowersthe platform to stow level and then moves theplatform inward (retracts) to the stow position.

WARNING

Fold handrails downbefore stowing lift.Failure to do so mayresult in seriousbodily injury and/orproperty damage.

Note: The lift will notstow with weight on theplatform (built-in safetyfeature).

Fold handrails downbefore stowing lift.Failure to do so mayresult in seriousbodily injury and/orproperty damage.

DOOR CLOSE: When the vehicle is equipped withautomatic door openers (optional), the DOORCLOSE switch closes the doors. This functionoperates only when the platform is stowed or fullyextended and below stow level.

Note: If any of these functions do not occur asdescribed, discontinue lift use immediately andcontact your sales representative or call The BraunCorporation at 1-800-THE LIFT. One of our nationalservice representatives will direct you to an autho-rized service repairman who will inspect your lift.

Manual Bridge Plate Operating Instructions

The bridge plate bridges the gap between the lift platformand the vehicle floor when the lift platform is raised fully(positioned at floor level), as well as serving as an inboardroll stop.

Manual bridge plates are attendant operated. The bridgeplate rests on the platform surface when the lift is in thestowed position (see Photo A). When the platform is fullyextended and raised or lowered to the desired height, thebridge plate is manually positioned as needed.

When raised to the vertical position, the rear (left) end ofthe plate engages a notch in the angled engagementbracket located at the inboard end of the platform sideplate. See Photos B and C. The spring located on theopposite end of the bridge plate hinge places rearwardpressure on the bridge plate to retain the plate in thevertical position (engaged in bracket notch).

When the platform is raised to floor level, the bridge plateis manually lowered to the vehicle floor (bridging position)by moving the bridge plate to the right to disengage it, andthen lowering it to the floor. From the floor level bridgingposition, the bridge plate is manually raised to the verticalposition (see Photos D, E and F).

The bridge plate can be folded down to the platformsurface by the attendant before stowing the lift platform, orthe stowing (retracting) movement of the platform will pushthe bridge plate down as it contacts the lift carriage.

Cable-Activated Platform Manual Release System

Platform Manual ReleaseSystem: A cable-activatedmanual release system releasesand engages the platform car-riage assembly drive chain toallow the platform carriageassembly to be manually movedout (extended) or moved in(retracted) as needed. A T-handle is provided on the releasecable for activation of the manualrelease system (details follow).

After manually moving theplatform in or out, it is extremelyimportant that the cable-activatedmanual release is positively re-engaged to secure (lock) theplatform carriage assembly beforeloading a passenger on theplatform or before driving thevehicle (reengagement procedureoutlined on following page).

Failure to manually lock theplatform carriage assembly (re-engage the carriage assemblydrive chain) after manual deploy-ment, will allow the platform to rollin or out of housing unhinderedduring vehicle movement. Failureto lock the platform will also allowthe platform to roll in or out ofhousing unhindered during handpump raising and loweringprocedures.

After manually releasingplatform, push manual releaseT-handle in fully and ensureplatform is locked beforedriving lift vehicle. Uncon-trolled and unintentionalplatform deployment (inadvert-ent platform ejection) mayresult in serious bodily injuryand/or property damage.

The UVL has the capability ofbeing manually operated. If youexperience power or equipmentfailure, refer to the ManualOperating Instructions to manu-ally operate the lift. Refer to theLift Operating Instructions for allnormal lift operation procedures(such as loading and unloadingpassengers). Follow all LiftOperation Safety Precautionsat all times!

Familiarize yourself with thecomponents necessary to operatethe Manual Back-Up System (seeillustration at right and photos onpages 17 and 18). The locationof the power pack and releasecable varies from vehicle tovehicle (depending on yourparticular installation).

The T-handle release cablereleases and engages the liftplatform to allow the platform to

be manually extended andretracted. The manual back-uppump (hand pump) is used tomanually lower and raise theextended platform.

Step-by-step instructions formanually moving the platformin and out, manually raisingand lowering the platformand manually lowering(unfolding) the outboard rollstop are provided on the followingpages. Refer to the applicableManual Operation instructions fordetailed procedures.

Always exercise extreme cautionwhen operating the lift manually.Read the warning and thesafety information below andon the following page! Read allManual Operating Instructionsbefore attempting to performmanual operation procedures.

Note: Location of powerpack and T-handle varies.

Note: Photos of the powerpack and T-handle appearon pages 17 and 18.

WARNING

Push T-handle in fully and manually move platform in and out to engage platform lock before driving vehicle.Failure to lock platform may result in unintended platform deployment. Unintended platform deployment mayresult in serious bodily injury and/or property damage.

Maintenance and Lubrication

WARNING

Annual maintenanceand lubrication proce-dures must be per-formed by authorizedservice personnel.Failure to do so mayresult in seriousbodily injury and/orproperty damage.

Maintenance is necessary toensure safe and trouble-free liftoperation. General preventivemaintenance consisting ofinspections of your lift system andcleaning the lift should be a partof your routine. When cleaningthe lift, pay special attention tothe roll stop opening, platformsurface and bottom of platform. Ifmud, ice and/or snow build-up isapparent on platform surface, clean the area prior to use. Donot spray water inside of lifthousing.

The lift-equipped vehicle shouldbe stored in a garage or othersheltered place if possible, especially during inclementweather conditions. When the liftis not in use, the lift should be inthe stowed position to keepforeign objects, rain, ice, snow, etc., from entering through the lift

opening or building up on theplatform surface.

The UVL has been designed withmany self-lubricating compo-nents. Lubricate the pivot pointsspecified below approximatelyevery four weeks (or 100 cycles)with a light penetrating type oil(30 weight or equivalent). Severeconditions (weather, environment, heavy usage, etc.) may requiremore frequent lubrication.

Complete maintenance checksand lubrication procedures mustbe performed annually by anauthorized Braun Corporationsale representative who hasattended and been certified bythe Braun UVL Sales andService School. If the annualmaintenance and lubricationprocedures cannot be performed,or if there is any sign of lift

damage, wear, abnormal condi-tion or improper operation, discontinue lift use immedi-ately. Contact your dealer or callThe Braun Corporation at 1-800-THE LIFT. One of our nationalservice representatives will directyou to an authorized servicerepairman who will inspect yourlift.

Braun “Worry-Free”Three-Year Limited Warranty

UVLThe Braun Corporation of Winamac, Indiana, warrants its wheelchair lift against

defects in material and workmanship for three years, providing the lift is operated and maintained properly and in conformity with this manual. This warranty is limited to the original purchaser and does not cover defects in the motor vehicle on which it is installed, or defects in the lift caused by a defect in any part of the motor vehicle.

This warranty commences on the date the lift is put in service, providing the warranty registration card is completed and received by The Braun Corporation within 20 days of purchase.

This warranty also covers the cost of labor for the repair or replacement of most parts for one year when performed by an authorized Braun Representative. (A Braun labor schedule determines cost allowance for repairs.)

This warranty does not cover normal maintenance, service, or periodic adjustments necessitated by use or wear. The Braun Corporation will not, under any circumstances, pay for loss of use of lift or vehicle in which it is installed or loss of time.

This warranty will become null and void if the lift has been damaged through accident, misuse, or neglect, or if the lift has been altered in any respect.
