The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) for IRA Annuities has been reinstated and made permanent. If you have an IRA Annuity and you’ve reached age 70 ½, the law now provides the permanent option to make a tax-deductible contribution from your account to a tax-exempt charity such as Wesley Foundation, not to exceed $100,000. Note: For your gift to qualify under this law, you must make your contribution directly from your account through your account trustee or custodian. Also, you must have reached age 70 ½ when the gift is made. A gift made too early in the year in which you will reach 70 ½ may not qualify. To initiate a Qualified Charitable Deduction from your IRA, first contact the charity to tell them of your intent and to verify how the check should be made payable, then instruct the annuity account custodian to make the distribution check accordingly. When the charity receives your gift you will receive an acknowledgment to retain for verification of a tax-deductible gift.

The Wesley Capital Campaign – Update and Thank You We are excited to share that replacement of the Social Center’s original slate roof was completed on schedule and under budget. The generosity of those listed below – more than 190 households – has made this and other capital improvements possible. Your gifts are making an enormous difference! Additional contributions to the Wesley Capital Campaign will fully fund the new roof and allow us to move forward on the final phase of capital improvements that focus on electrical and window upgrades. This significant endeavor to preserve and enhance our historic facility would not be possible without your support. Thank you!

Meet Graduate Student, Chris Hedlin Chris Hedlin arrived on campus in August 2016 and found a church home at Wesley. “I joined the grad study reading group basically after my first week, and I somehow already felt like I belonged there,” said Chris, who took a break to interview. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in 2016, majoring in English and Spanish. At the University of Illinois, she is a graduate student in English, and she plans to teach, perhaps as a professor. She is also a part-time fitness class instructor on campus, teaching various lifting exercises. Her family is Lutheran; her father, Dave Hedlin, is Pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in New Lenox, IL. She attends the traditional format worship service at Wesley on Sunday mornings, because she feels the content is relevant; Wesley doesn’t deal in abstractions, and she likes that: “I’ve only been here for several months, but I’ve seen already that this is a church that’s not afraid to talk about injustices and hurts and abuses, both to people and power, where it sees them, and it’s a church that’s not afraid to back those words up with actions.” As a new student to town, she was attracted to Wesley’s grad student program, the Wesley Food Pantry, and an inclusiveness that welcomes all people to worship and programs. Of course, Wesley’s convenient location and its intergenerational aspect add to the “connection” that many students want in a campus church: “The warmth and inclusivity of this church amazes me. I’ve found true friends who have enlivened my whole experience on this campus, starting with grad students in the study group, and certainly Pastors Julie, Miriam, and Dan.”
