He looks knocked up with cuts and the fact he’s lying in water clearly shows something of discomfort has occured. The audience will question who this man is and how he got into this state. 00:56 Straight Cut Draws the audience's’ attention to this child on the beach Suggests that the male actor from earlier is viewing this. If so, the audience will question why a child is here and where exactly they are at the moment. Is this a public beach? In the middle of nowhere? It sets the film up nicely to explain the narrative right from the start.

TimeDeviceDetailEffect on Audience

00:00-00:36IdentsUsage of black and white monotone over colourGives the film an intense vibe as the audience is most likely already aware of the nature of the film. This amplifies this.

00:39Establishing ShotWide shot of waves supported by diegetic musicGives the audience an idea of where the opening location is. The roughness of the waves also reflects the films personality.

00:40 - 00:46Pan Left + Diegetic WavesLengthy pan supported by the sound of the wavesEmphasises just how rough the waves are which reflects the nature of the film but also gives the audiences strong perception of things that could possibly go wrong due to the severe setting.

00:49Close UpShows the male protagonist's face lying down in the waterThe state of the character is a bad one. He looks knocked up with cuts and the fact hes lying in water clearly shows something of discomfort has occured. The audience will question who this man is and how he got into this state.

00:56Straight CutDraws the audience's attention to this child on the beachSuggests that the male actor from earlier is viewing this. If so, the audience will question why a child is here and where exactly they are at the moment. Is this a public beach? In the middle of nowhere? It sets the film up nicely to explain the narrative right from the start.

01:00Extreme Close UpShot very near to the actors face.Strongly emphasises the clear disgust on his face. Makes it very obvious that he has been through an undesirable situation. Makes the audience wonder what this could be.

01:02Medium-Long Shot Multiple children playing now.The shot reverse shot here allows the audience to compare the young boy with the main actor and notice familiarity. This allows the audience to think up potential links between the two. On top of this theyll also begin to question who the girl is and what importance she holds. Finally, the cut from the mans miserable face to the children playing also brings out the contrast between their enjoyment and his misery.

01:05Close-UpA more detailed shot of the manHe has lifted his head and now the audience can get a clearer shot of the man. His injuries are even more clear now and his face has converted from misery to pure confusion. It is clear to the audience he too doesnt understand what he is seeing.

01:09Straight CutCuts back to children running, girl screams. There is clear panic among the children but due the limited POV shown from the man the audience is not yet aware what is causing this unsettled environment.

01:13CutCuts back to the man once againThis time the man looks to fade out. He turns his head to one side and closes his eyes. The audience inevitably wonders what is wrong with him and begins to question how serious his state his.

01:16Medium Close UpCuts to gun poking main males backThis cut will surprise the viewer as the appearance of a weapon such as a gun will have been unexpected. They will begin to ask questions such as Is he hostile? Friendly? etc.

01:17Low-angle ShotReveals who is using the gunMakes the man with the gun seem tall but also the shot doesnt necessarily portray him negatively. He has strong lighting shining in from behind him and he hasnt shown any real signs of hostility. The audience may begin to trust him more.

01:24Wide ShotShows the military man has support nearbyThe audience now knows that there are multiple men, all armed in the area. It is assumed they are military although they are not trusted yet as they could quite easily be a dangerous organisation.

01:28Medium ShotShot of dark room The Room is rather menacing and doesnt present itself that positively. The audience will wonder who these men in the room are and if they have any connotations to criminality.

01:42Close Up of GunShown when theyre evaluating the main mans contents. The main purpose of this group has yet to be identified but since they are simply checking him for dangerous weaponries the audience may begin to feel more trustful. They havent shown any real signs of genuine threat and so the audience is more likely to feel comfortable around these men.
