Assessments help in identifying organiza-
tional gaps in competencies, making deci-
sions on recruitment and in succession
planning. Traditionally, knowledge-based
methods such as multiple-choice ques-
tions, constructed essays and standard-
ized tests have been used for objectively
assessing candidates. However, these
methodologies test the candidate on their
knowledge of a particular topic rather
than their skill sets or their approach to
problem-solving
Complexity of today's business problems
and the magnitude of factors that affect
firms today make it difficult for conven-
tional methods to assess the candidate's
core capabilities. Also, it is hard to find
one 'right' answer in many managerial de-
cision making processes.
Inbox simulation, an innovative simulation
-based management assessment solution
based on in-tray exercises aims to address
this gap. The simulation can be custom-
ized such that it is applicable to different
roles across the organization. Candidates
get a real taste of "a day in the life of the
role" and are evaluated on how well they
manage and delegate requests, com-
plaints and questions.

The simulation brings together real-life-like events and situations that managers are likely
to face in their roles and assesses the execution on a number of parameters. They are re-
quired to prioritize issues in alignment with the organization's policies and achieve busi-
ness objectives. The ideal duration of the simulation is 60 minutes. The simulation pro-
duces a detailed report in the end, which highlights core managerial competencies such
as responsiveness, time management, team management, prioritization and delegation.
