About the Author

The author neither has a big brand of IIM or IIT backing him nor is he a well-known personality with credible achievements in film, theatre, music, sports, culture, and bureaucracy or in corporate India. He never has visited a foreign land nor does he have an overseas work experience of any kind. His blog has never been ranked among the top 100 blogs in the country owing to the simple fact that he doesn’t blog. And one important thing, his earlier novels were not blockbuster hits or runaway bestsellers as this one happens to be his debut novel. His work has never been published in the past by any leading publisher (including the imprints) or has been represented by any agent before. He doesn’t work with a national newspaper or a leading national magazine or lifestyle magazine as a full-time employee or as a regular features contributor one or the other. He neither has won any literary award nor holds some kind of PhD in creative writing either. He is just a small town boy with a very big dream of becoming a storyteller someday.

A book is not just about the words or writings of an author. Some say it is the author’s feelings and emotions. Others say it is the result of the thought process that is different from the rest of the world. But as far as I am concerned, a book is a journey. My journey would not have been so exciting and special without the following companions. Though many wonderful people had been a part of this memorable journey, at the end, only a few decided to stay on.

Ashok, my best friend, who patted my shoulder and said, “Just follow your heart, dude,” when I was talking about her under the moonlight sitting on the parapet wall of his terrace and revealed my bizarre idea of writing for the very first time. Dilip, my college mate, my bus mate, my area mate, you can use a lot of other mates when it comes to Dilip. But more than just a mate he is a brother to me. Naveen, my last bench partner during college days, who partnered with me in sleeping during class hours, in bunking and in all my backlogs, and stood along with me in my screwed up college days. Karthikeyan, my school friend, who came to my rescue, whenever I needed him badly.

Uma Maheswari … hmmm wait a second. How can I forget to mention the women who taught me the greatest lessons of life? So before my English ma’am it’s Nithya who said life is like a game of chess, at times you need to make some backward moves in order to get ‘right there’. But she proved to be a ‘forcing move’ of the same game. Then its Vidhya, again, who taught women are definitely from ‘Venus’, a different world and there is nothing one can do about it. Uploading Bella’s (Edward’s gf) picture as ‘profile pic’ can be done by anyone, but to live an independent life of her sort, who defends Edward from the whole world including blood sucking vampires and revenge seeking werewolves, needs real insight and outlook towards life, hope she will understand this someday.

Now Uma Maheswari my English ma’am, probably she was the one who sowed the seeds of writing in me somewhere in my junior grades.

The next one is my biggest asset—my family. Man became social animal only because of family. Else he would have still been part of wild life. This truth can be best suited for none other than ‘me’. ‘Amma, Appa and Kutima (my sister) I want to apologise to you for my animal like behaviour all these years. Especially for my solitude and nocturnal trait that bothered you more than anything else. I owe you my life for being with me and emotionally supporting me in my tough times. If there was some life in me when everything else was messed up, it was only because of you.’

‘Love you all’, especially Amma who readily offered her shoulders whenever I became tired physically as well as mentally.

Amma or maa, the only reason why all the male species love female species.

Apart from my family I want to thank one more person who shared the love of motherhood with me equally along with her sons. She is my paternal aunt Nandhini Chiti (chachi), my well-wisher, mentor, friend, critic and fan. Without her claps I would have never made it to the finish line. She has been my admirer ever since I narrated the story of Honey I Shrunk the Kids for the first time, going back to my tooth-falling age.

A special thanks to Mozart of Madras’ Sadda Haq which raised my spirits when I was literally cramping towards the end of the finish line. Also my sincere gratitude to Google and Wikipedia, for the wealth of knowledge provided to me at my finger tips. Mankind’s greatest invention (Google) almost became a part of my world in the entire journey. printed text, the thickness of the cover page, the spine, the flow of leaflets upon rolling the thumb, its scintillating tone and scent, above all one’s own story in the hands, is like the feel of a wrapped ‘tiny puny’ in the hands of a mother who has just delivered a life to the world.

People who helped me in this regard are Prithvin the author of Iron Tooth, whose review proved to be very vital for my amateur work. Kalaimathy ma’am, who corrected my raw draft with great patience and gave me some valuable suggestion and feedback, but unfortunately left this world before her time (Ma’am my book has finally seen its day light, hope you are smiling at me from heaven in the same way as you did after giving it a first read. Rest in peace, Ma’am!) Author’s Note

There are two types of people in the world. One, the prodigy of the world who are extremely talented, ‘born genius’, and know what their strength is, which actually explains the reason why they are very successful. God made them to be a source of inspiration. They don’t need any stupid college degree to achieve things. They sit in front of a computer and go on to build a billion dollar venture. When they set their feet in the crease, the atmosphere of the ground electrifies. They enter their room in the night with the mood for composing and in the morning they come out with a masterpiece.

The second ones are those who are contrary to the first ones. They just come to the world, stay and one fine day leave. These types don’t hold a ‘thing’ towards the world nor believe in any kind of purpose associated with life. They are least bothered about the happenings around them and just move along with the world. They are the happiest and their existence in large number differentiates the few of the former ones.

Then something happened to God… He must have spotted a Goddess.

And He decided to create the third type, a class sandwiched between the above two classes. To tell something about these types—they are just like any other creature with no special gift like the first ones. The world makes them believe that they are lucky enough to be unlucky. They can be easily identified in a crowd. For instance, in a restaurant when a bunch of people place an order, there would be one person whose first choice of order is never served. He or she has to settle with whatever is available. They belong to these types. Another clue to label their fraternity is that they are the ones who after so many inquiries exactly board the wrong bus. In a queue at any reservation counter or theatre, they would be at the tail end and when finally

it is their turn, the counter is banged shut. There are no better examples than their lives to best exemplify Murphy’s Law. In a nut-shell they are the ones who miss out every chance that comes along their way in the smallest margin, be it a date, an entrance examination or any kind of interview.

These wandering souls are always in search of something like nomads. Happiness and satisfaction is just a passing cloud for them. Emotional setbacks are their inseparable companions. All their attempts are just, ‘attempts’. The world is ever ready to ridicule them for their failures. Despite this they don’t give up. They neither stop trying, nor quit. Even though they know the strength they possess is that of a pinhead to break the dam—the block—still they go for it and continuously strive to challenge the world. This creed of people is ever ready to search the needle in a haystack and never mind looking for a black cat in the coal cellar at all. They are constantly in a quest to find their purpose of existence.

This book is one such attempt, certainly made by a third kind.

Prologue

It all started with an adrenaline rush.

I trembled.

Something, all of a sudden, struck me after an intensive flash…

My hand compressed to exert the maximum pressure it had never experienced before … poor thigh muscles were experiencing heavy punches from the closed fist.

I got a feel as if the veins were bulging out like lava tracts … as a result I started perspiring.

Whipping out the distress in the face, I looked up into the heavens with eyes shut and found nothing but darkness...

Being constantly beaten up by the repeated haunts, my body ached like hell and I didn’t even realise it … my mind hissed the siren but I was not ready to mind my ‘mind’.

The vibrant and volatile brain of mine lost control and banged against the inner wall of the head hard again and again and again, ordering my mouth to explode violently out of anger like a gorilla.

But all I could do was nothing other than to just get along with the surpassing white haze.

Transferring the ultimate energy from the top part of my animated body to earth, acting as a conduit was difficult.

Even more difficult was to remain in silence accepting the prostration.

In order to accomplish this, I rebelled like a rebellion to make the

tear drop to stay within the brim of the eyes, which evolved out of this massive continuation of the reactions—more or less like a chain reaction where one leads to the other.

I was feeling cold, hot, wet and dry.

I was feeling lonely and a sense of being completely lost in the midst of an open dark space perturbed from the empty silence around me…

For the first time I saw a demon inside me, who was ripping my flesh in rage … there was blood poof everywhere. I overthrew him from my body and wended along the road leaving him behind.

He started following me, gradually from following he started to chase me down the road. He caught hold of me from behind. My neck got locked to his arm. The passage was completely deformed. I felt as if my wind pipe and food pipe got twisted inside the throat. It resulted in severe choking. I was virtually suffocating. There was no one to help. I was toddled and became pale in that extremity. The demon made me to realize the actual cause, the real trigger…

Out of Control… Damn … my eyes opened up in fear and funked to realise that my whole body was shaky…

After a rigorous oscillation they slowed down and at last came to a halt towards the ground… A while later my eyelids slowly put the screen to my vision again at a better wavelength… And … Man … I put a question to the solid me, the never experienced and unexplored question.

‘What’s happening to you?’
