Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches marked a major stepin its expansion and is now serving clients in the northern PalmBeach County area. “We’re very pleased to be able to expand into Lake Park,

North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens,” said ExecutiveDirector Pam Calzadilla. “Thanks to the generosity andsupport of our community, we’re making sure seniors therehave the opportunity to receive freshly prepared meals.”Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches expanded into

northern Palm Beach County at the invitation of a long-stand-ing program in the area that was no longer able to continueproviding services to its more than two-dozen clients.“We’re still in the early stages of delivering in the area,”

Calzadilla said. “We’re continuing to build financialsupport for the initiative and increasing the number ofclients we serve.”

Palm Beach County’s biggest Thanksgiving pie sale – Pie It For-ward – benefiting Meals On Wheels of the Palm Beaches, sold 2,000pies donated by the county’s most prestigious chefs and bakers.

The six-week campaign unitedlocal chefs and community phi-lanthropists to support Meals onWheels’ mission of feeding localseniors in need. “Supporters really rallied

around Pie It Forward to bringawareness and support to seniorhunger in Palm Beach County,”said Meals on Wheels of thePalm Beaches’ Founder CharlieRing. “We were humbled tohave the support of our chefs andsponsors, and we can’t wait toPie It Forward again next year.”

A special thanks goes out to our participating bakers and toour sponsors.“This truly was a community effort and we’re grateful to

everyone who bought pies and helped us make our first Pie ItForward a great success,” said Meals on Wheels ExecutiveDirector Pam Calzadilla.

Corporate partners play an importantrole in the success of Meals on Wheels ofthe Palm Beaches. Over the last several months, volunteers

from Florida Power and Light Co., Bank ofAmerica and Whole Foods Market in WestPalm Beach have joined Meals on Wheelsin delivering meals and special packagesto Meals on Wheels’ clients. Just in time for the peak of hurricane

season, Meals on Wheels, FPL and WholeFoods Market teamed up to deliver morethan 150 bags of emergency food sup-plies. Each kit contains three day’s worthof food supplies for breakfast, lunch anddinner as well as snacks and nutritionalbeverages. Supplies included cereal,canned meats, fruit packs, shelf stablemilk, peanut butter and snacks. In October, another group of volunteers

from FPL, participating in the companiesCharity Showcase, took over severalMeals on Wheels’ routes and delivered tosurprised clients throughout the WestPalm Beach and Lake Worth areas.Then a week before Christmas, a team

from Bank of America helped Meals onWheels deliver holiday bags, filled withcookies, candies and other treats, to clients. “We’re very grateful to the corporate

volunteers who have taken time tocome out and meet our clients,” saidPam Calzadilla, Meals on Wheels’executive director. “Our clients certainlyenjoy the visit and so do the volun-teers who have an opportunity tolearn more about senior hunger in ourcommunity.”

New Kitchen Provides Room for ExpansionAs it continued to expand and serve more clients, Meals on

Wheels of the Palm Beaches reached the point where the kitchenfacilities at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beachwere no longer able to meet the organization’s needs. After an exhaustive search, Meals on Wheels partnered with

the Triangle Club and since summer has been using the kitchenfacilities for food preparation and packaging.“The spacious Triangle Club facilities make it easier for us to

prepare a large number of mealsevery weekday,” Calzadilla said.“The board and the staff of the clubhave been very accommodatingand supportive and we’re ex-tremely grateful.”With the new facilities, Program

Director Debbie Emerick and Pro-gram Coordinator Neil Birch havebeen able to set up a new assem-bly line system that makes gettingmeals ready for delivery easier andmore efficient. “Our volunteers really enjoy

working in the kitchen at the Tri-angle Club,” Emerick said. “Chef

Marco and the staff have been very welcoming and are great towork with.” In October, West Palm Beach Mayor Geri Muoio and County

Commissioner Shelley Vana joined Meals on Wheels of thePalm Beaches for a ribbon cutting ceremony to officiallyrecognize the partnershipwith the Triangle Club.

Meals on Wheels Moving AlongThe Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches’ family is truly that – a family. We’re made up of volunteers, staff, board members and financial supporters. We have friends from the community – companies

and non-profit organizations – as well as clients who can make us laugh and sometimes force us to fight back tears. We take ourtask of addressing a deep need in the community very seriously but this family is one that also knows how to have a good time. At 93, Philip Yandel is a member of “The Greatest Generation.” A Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches’ client who lives in

Century Village, Yandel is a retired Navy man who still has sea-water in his veins. A former co-pilot and navigator, Yandel flew everything from

bombers and fighter jets to blimps and helicopters during twotours that spanned almost three decades and parts of three wars. “After 28 years in the

Navy, I miss it so much,”he said. “Every night, I stilldream about flying.” Growing up in North

Carolina, Yandel joinedthe service as a way toavoid having to work on thefamily farm, which grewgrain crops such as corn.It was during World

War II when Yandel wasselected to go to flighttraining school, a moveby the Navy that put him in harm’s way several times – not justat the hands of an enemy but also when planes or helicopterslost engines or failed to otherwise perform properly.‘I was probably the luckiest guy in the world,” he said. “Several

things happened to me that saved my life.” A bout with malaria that landed him in the hospital led to

him being pulled out of a secret bomber squadron that he laterlost track of. Eventually, he ended up in Guam, where he spentmore than a year before coming down with impetigo, due inpart to the deplorable living conditions there. After that he returned home to North Carolina but wasn’t happy.“I was pacing the floors and my mother told me go back to

the Navy,” he said. After re-enlisting, Yandel spent several years on a ferry

squadron, whose job was to bring planes and helicopters fromone area to another, often back to a base for repairs. “That’s when I started my real charmed life,” he said. Even after he retired from the Navy, Yandel couldn’t get the

urge to fly out of his system and returned to work as a civilianemployee doing test flights. For Yandel, a man who has stories upon stories of close calls

and near misses, Meals on Wheel of the Palm Beaches is pro-viding a tool that helps him maintain his independence after hewas no longer able to drive – and stay healthy. “I really enjoy the meals,” he said. “They’re good and they’renourishing meals.”

• Of the estimated 285,155 seniors in Palm Beach County,41,062 are considered food insecure.
