From May 28 to June 1, 2012, with the assistance of international faculty, our Czech team successfully carried out its first ATLS inaugural course in Hradec Kralove, a university city in the eastern part of the country. The Czech Republic, located in the heart of Europe, has a population of approximately 10 million and faces one of the highest national trauma levels in the region.

The ATLS Committee approved our request to promulgate the ATLS program in the Czech Republic on March 10, 2010. Just over a year later, Claus Falck-Larsen, MD, FACS (ATLS Region 15 Chief), and Pedro Moniz Pereira, MD, FACS (former ATLS–Europe Chair), flew to Hradec Kralove to conduct the introductory site visit. Following the recommendation of Dr. Winter and Roman Kosir, MD (ATLS–Slovenia Chair), our five candidates subsequently completed their teaching requirements in Slovenia and the Netherlands prior to our inaugural course.

The much-anticipated ATLS inaugural course was organized in large part by Dr. Jaromir Koci (ATLS–Czech Republic Chair) and Jakub Dedek (ATLS–Czech Republic National

Jay Doucet, MD, FACS (Course Director, USA); Maria Fernanda Jimenez, MD, FACS (Site Director, Colombia); and Ms. Yeimy Reyes (Site Coordinator, Colombia) organized and participated in the course. Dr. Doucet said, “This was an excellent inaugural course conducted in a highly organized, friendly, and professional manner by Dr. Maria F. Jimenez and the international faculty. The facilities were excellent. The food and support services were excellent. The hospital provided by Dr. Maria’s team was outstanding.”

ATLS Coordinator Meeting Invitationby Lesley Dunstall, ATLS Senior Coordinator Representative

The ATLS International Meeting is on the horizon, and the ATLS program office has scheduled a coordinator meeting for all ATLS coordinators on Saturday, September 29. This is your meeting, so we are calling for your input to the agenda! Previous meetings in Washington, DC (2010), and San Francisco, CA (2011), have been very successful, so the challenge this year will be to keep the momentum going.

The plan is to be more interactive by combining coordinator presentations with a panel discussion to allow for the exchange of ideas and best practices. Upon their arrival on Saturday, coordinators will be asked to submit meeting topics for discussion during the panel session. To assist in preparing for the meeting and agenda, please contact Ms. Dunstall ([email protected]) with an abstract for your proposed presentation by Friday, September 7, 2012. ntDB uPDateExciting news! In February, we issued the annual NTDB Call for Data to more than 900 trauma centers requesting their 2011 admissions. To our surprise, more than 80 percent of the centers participated, yielding more than 774,000 records. This data will be used for our annual NTDB and Pediatric reports and to produce individual facility benchmarking reports giving contributors the tools they need to perfect their internal processes.

NTDB remains a consistent resource to contributing facilities and researchers interested in characterizing the care of injured patients. If your facility is interested in joining the NTDB, please visit our website at http://facs.org/trauma/ntdb/index.html. Questions? Contact us at [email protected].

2012 Distinguished Fellow of the Chilean COTOn April 22, during the 56th Annual Chilean Congress in Santiago, Carlos Carvajal Hafemann, MD, FACS (ACS COT Chair in Chile), was recognized as the 2012 Distinguished Fellow of the Chilean Committee on Trauma. Below is an excerpt from a speech given by Juan Lombardi, MD, FACS, who congratulated Dr. Carvajal for his contributions to the Chapter.

“Without a doubt, Dr. Carvajal’s greatest contribution within the Chilean Chapter has been to the Committee on Trauma. In 2005, the ACS COT in Chicago, IL, appointed him Chair of the Chilean COT, a position he still holds today. He has played a large role in the implementation of the following courses, all of which complement ATLS: PHTLS, ATCM, DMEP, ATOM, and RTTDC. Dr. Carvajal, along with the first group of Chilean ATLS instructors, actively participates in the promulgation of ATLS in South America, which has brought him much deserved recognition.

Dr. Carvajal, thank you very much for your contributions to medicine in Chile, to the American College of Surgeons, and to your friends.”

We thank Dr. Lombardi, Dr. Froilan Fernandez, and Celia Aldana for their contributions to this article.
