Short Story Unit

Literary Term: Dialogue

Dialogue is a conversation between or among characters in a literary work.

Dialogue is usually set off by quotation marks, and a new paragraph indicates a change of speaker.

EXAMPLE: “Do you want to go to the movies this weekend?” asked Jane.“No thanks. I have loads of homework to do,” I replied sullenly.

Why would an author use dialogue?– to reveal character traits and relationships (indirect characterization)– To advance the action of the plot and develop the conflict– To add variety, color, and realism to narratives (stories)

Literary Term: Dialect

Dialect is a way of speaking that is common to people of a region or group.

The words, pronunciations, and grammar of a dialect differ from those of the standard form of a language.

Why would an author use dialect?– To reveal the story’s setting, to make settings more vivid, and to add

realism to narratives (stories)– to reveal character traits and relationships (indirect characterization)

own words.

1. How many dialects are presented in this clip? Where do they originate from?

2. How does dialect and dialogue add variety and realism to the narrative (story)?

3. What does the dialogue and dialect tell us about the characters and/or culture represented?

Clip #1: Dialect

Clip #2: Dialogue and Dialect

For the final clip, you will answer these following questions:1. What is the name of the dialect being studied?

2. Why or how did this dialect form or begin?

3. How does this dialect represent the culture and history of Hawaii as a region of the United States?

Clip #3: Where do different dialects come from?
