2. The objective stated I must make a Music promo video, A CD Cover with a Magazine advert. When going through the brief I made a plan in which the first thing I looked at was genre. There were many genres, and as a group we had to chose a genre we all wanted to workon. 3. My group and I came to the conclusion, of choosing the Rap & Rock genre for our musicvideo This genre was just as intriguing as it was challenging 4. I researched on Rap&Rock advertisementmagazines, Music videos, And Digi-packslearning how to Identify the conventions ofthem 5. After the long process, of finding an artist, wefinally came across a band named ArcheanSoundtrack on Unsigned.com We did not hesitate to establishing a meetingwith them. In that meeting we In we discussed theirmanagement details , if they were signed ornot, where they saw themselves in 10 years, andwhich Label they would like to sign to.We also discussed which song we would film to ourmusic video and the details of where they wouldperform it next in order for to incorporate livefootage. 6. Lyrics for Mercurial 7. The agenda for the meeting was to also findout background information about the band. In which they told us, they first performed in2000 at their university where they met andlived together. They left university still striding towardsbecoming famous whilst working full-time 8. When getting back to college my group and Iwent through the stages in which we neededto research in. We first looked into the meaning of thelyrics, and thought about how we couldstructure a narrative around it. We then looked at various narratives thatoccur within Rap&Rock Music videos 9. Preparation Within a few weeks my group and I wereprepared to film the first stages of ournarrative. But before that we had to create astory board to make sure when we startfilming we are organized. 10. Story Board 11. Theorys and Conventions When researching theorists I came acrossTodorvs , Propp and Levi-Straus, Narrative Theory.I looked at Andrew Goodwins theory of musicvideo analysis, Roland Barts theory of Actioncodes and Liner vs non liner structure. My groupand I discussed how we could apply andchallenge theories within our music video. In Regards to our narrative we used a romanticstory with a sense of rebellion as it is commonwithin the Rap&Rock genre. 12. Todorovs theory After research on Todorvs theory, weincorporated the 5 equilibrium stages whichwere 1 equilibrium 2 disruption 3 recognition of the disruption 4 attempt to restore equilibrium 5 resolution whether Positive or Negative 13. 1 14. 2 15. 3 16. We chose to challenge the 4th rule toTodorovs theory as we wanted to send amessage to the audience, showing theres notalways a way out and sometimes people feellike nobody wants to help. We representedthis through the fact that there wasnt anattempt to resolve her resolution, showing the5th rule to end in the result leaving her indepression. 17. 5 18. Goodwins theory Pictures Of Performing Live Close-ups within Rap Genre characteristics - Close-ups of Band leader andMusical instrument/ Flashing lights Relationship between Music and Visuals Relationship between Lyrics and Visuals Notion of looking (Craig looking at the camera) Voyeurism Demand of the record label Shown through Craigs Mis-en-cen as Rap Rock genre artists tend to dress casually. 19. Conventions of Real Rock & Rap musicvideos What do they look like, what do they do and what do they use?Linkin Park NumbLinkin park is a Rap/Rock genre band. When looking at the bands videoNumb I noticed they used Narrative ,Live footage, Close-ups of themusical instruments and the band themselves. I used a variety of shots onthe a girl showing the narrative story revolving around her, I also used theconventions from Linkin parks music video Numb to illustrate the genreof my band. From this analysis, its suggested Rap & Rock tend to haveboth conventions from Rap, and Rock incorporated within their musicvideos. I learnt this through analyzing different Rap and Rock videos thatare posted on my blog. These videos conveyed and demonstrated, theirown conventions within their genre, which helped me recognized wherethe rap&rock genres conventions routed from.Pictures of Drakes Music Video & Pictures Of Greenday Wake me up videoon blog 20. Rap In a Rap video music there would be many close-ups of theartist There would be voyeurism, The artists mise-en-scen would usually consist of Jewelryand expensive clothing Locations would be luxurious andwould usually consist of attractive females in them whichis called the Male Gaze. If the artist has been signed However If the artist is still trying to be noticed they willshow their Rural back ground of where they comefrom, dressed in casual clothing. In Rap music video gestures and expression is representedthrough body language and facial expression 21. Rock Rock Mise-en-scen is seen to fit in with Locationsand narrative settings. Their location is set on usually both performancebased and narrative. There would be close-ups of the band themselves The bands logo would usually occur in a musicvideo to create a buzz for their target audience A close-up of the bands musical instrumentswould be seen too 22. My Rap & Rock Music VideoMercurialExpressionMy band wanted their audienceto Identify them as LondonersSo I used a Central location inLondon 23. Close-ups Of the musicalInstrumentVoyeurism 24. Here are two videos, it is shown that the use of logos withinGreendays video on the left. However My video uses the sameconvention by leaving Archean Soundtracks Logo too. (On the Right) 25. Audience My audience would be able to connect to myvideo as I made clear references to the genreconventions of real rap and rock musicvideos, through the structure of my musicvideo. 26. CD Covers for Both Genres When researching extensively on CD covers for Rap and Rock genres Ifound Within Most Rap covers there is always an explicit type logo warningconsumers. Rock albums hardly have it but it occasionally occurs. Rap covers tend to portray the artist bigger then the actual title whereasrock genres use the font of their names to dominate the image. Rap covers tend to always have the artist in person on their cover, butRock genres sometimes put their Band names with scenery on a cover. They do this because they want audiences to pay attention to the musicinstead of their image. Both Rap and rock make use of the Copyrights, distribution details, andBarcodes. I also noticed the fact that the two genres always make sure the frontcover and the back cover are matching in colour. 27. CD packaging Rap Picture of Rap Album cover 28. CD Packaging ROCK 29. My CD packaging Archean SoundtrackThrough the research ofthe Rap Rock genre I wasable to show theconventions I learnt, andincorporate them into mySingle Cover 30. Magazine advertisement When making decisions for the construction on my Magazine Advert Idecided to look at a Rap and Rock genres. The two genres in their separateforms helped me Incorporate the conventions that I later used. I noticed Rock bands usually use Bold letters to dominate the image intotal, whereas Rap artists tend to use themselves to dominate the image. Rock bands and Rap artists tend to state a website on their Ad, attractingaudiences into listening to their music Both genres always make their Names bigger then the album or the songthey are advertising. This is because they want to attract attention tothemselves rather then the title that may not be famous after a year or 2. Both genres make use of Logos, they see it as advertisement, it alsoattracts attention from target audiences as it could have been seen in amusic video. Rap genres and Rock genres put symbols of stores consumers can buytheir product from. This temps their audiences to go purchase their music. 31. As you can see from learning about theconventions within both genres, I tried toillustrated the knowledge I acquired fromthem when incorporating their conventionsinto my CD digi-pack, Music video andMagazine advertisement
