Convention Research

From conducting research into similar products I have been able to identify the conventions of the media forms I have produced.

These include researching and analysing; three album covers, three album advertisements and three music video’s.

My Album Cover

In terms of producing an album cover for my ancillary task I intended to follow and use the main conventions that I had identified from my research into similar album covers.

In comparison I feel my album cover looks conventional and follows a similar layout and font style to real album covers

Page 5: In what ways does your media product, follow conventions

I believe that my album cover follows the forms and conventions of similar products and would therefore have greater appeal to my target audience and would fit well in the market of similar products. This would suggest the target audience would be more interested in buying the product as it follows successful conventions.

Conventions of Editing and SoundConventionally, music video’s feature;

• Split screens – we challenged this convention by not incorporating any split screens into our music video

• Fast or slow paced editing - we used both fast and slow paced editing styles throughout our music video where appropriate

• Transitions – we used these in order to split up the music video

• Diegetic sound of band playing - we followed this convention by filming the band playing on the rooftop

• Song overlay - we followed this convention by using Wheatus’ - Teenage Dirtbag as an over lay on the music video

Camerawork Conventions • Variety of shot types; Pan shots – moving from band member to band memberZoom in – on the lead singer’s faceLow angle shot – see the whole band performing Long shot – see the whole bandClose up – to show a band members importance

In our main audio-visual task of producing a music video as a group we aimed to follow as many identified conventions as possible. We used a variety of shot types when filming, including; a long shot at the start of the video showing the whole band playing on the rooftop. We then used

a variety of close up’s on the lead singer, Ben’s face. We also used pan shot’s to alternatively show all of the band members and the location they were playing in. The intended effect of following conventions of

camerawork was to have a wider appeal to our target audience.

Mise en Scene Conventions • Props – performance equipment band merchandise drums guitar microphone & stand bass guitar • Costume – teen related skinny jeans check shirt• Location – school outside concert halls street

In terms of conventions, I believe I followed, used and developed the conventions that I identified after analysing

similar products.
