Many of the founding families ofChildren’s Medical Fund remember thedays when there was no children’s hos-
pital on Long Island. Really sick childrenwere sent to Boston and Philadelphiaor other large cities to receive theexpert pediatric care and treatment theydesperately needed.
After years of fundraising and advocacyactivities to win state approval,Schneider Children’s Hospital finallyopened its doors in 1983. Today, it is acomprehensive, acute-care hospital andis ranked number one for hospitals lessthan 25 years old.
It also has the highest occupancyof any children’s hospital in thenation. What does that mean?Designed to serve 40,000 ambu-latory visits a year, the hospitalhandles over 175,000. Its pedi-atric physicians serve the entireregion and families who comelong distances or from overseasto seek specialized care. And,with only 154 beds, SCH needsto expand.
Corporate Alliance activities. The last two years have been amazing.I am proud to have been a part ofCMF’s incredible growth and success. Our last two Golf and Tennis CharityClassics brought in substantial dollarswhen, in 2005, we honored RichardMack of Apollo Real Estate Advisors andCorey Ribotsky this past June 2006.
Our Corporate Alliance, though foundedin 2004, really established itself with itsfirst major event. The corporate break-fast in 2005 featured TV’s “Apprentice”star George Ross, who is the seniorcounsel and advisor for the TrumpOrganization. Former presidential candi-date Steve Forbes, who is the publisherand editor of Forbes magazine, was theguest speaker at this year’s breakfast.Forbes displayed a gifted memory ashe ticked off statistic after statistic in histake on the U.S. in a global economy. We enjoyed him immensely.
Marcum & Kliegman held its firstwalk/run when it became the corporatesponsor of L.I.’s Workplace Challengethis summer and designated CMF as abeneficiary of proceeds. These eventscreated interest in our organization andmany people joined our CorporateAlliance. We are very excited with theirenthusiasm and expect this to be oneof the major growth areas for CMF.
Children also have had a tremendousimpact on what we have accomplished.More and more of our activities have
involved children who want to partici-pate with a charity that helps other chil-dren. During the summer, the Kids Golffor Kids event benefited CMF, and, justrecently, the Women’s Division co-spon-sored with Lester’s the “One SingularSensation,” a children’s fashion show.Through CMF’s SCOPE, we have contin-ued to motivate high school students tofundraise for and volunteer with a chari-ty. Our families can be proud knowingthat our children are helping others inneed.
CMF also is excited to be involved andbegin fundraising officially for a newInpatient Pavilion. This five-story towerwill house a dedicated pediatric emer-gency department, something thisentire region desperately needs. ThePavilion also will relieve some of thedemands on the current facilities, whichwere designed for 40,000 outpatients ayear and which now serve 175,000.
Your financial support is needed nowmore than ever in order to build again. There are naming opportunities inmany dollar categories that are avail-able. We hope construction can beginas early as 2007. CMF joins with thehospital to co-host a special “kickoff”event in New York City on May 1, 2007.Please participate. As the largest donorto Schneider Children’s Hospital overthe last years, CMF contributors finallywill be recognized with a dedicated wallto honor them.
