TRANSCRIPT

In this program you will see some pink smiley faces. When you see one you should take off your headset and work with your partner on your worksheet. Each page will have one or more buttons like the blue arrow to the right. These buttons will take you to other pages that will teach you about Geometry!

Some shapes that we know:

Circle Square Triangle Diamond Oval Rectangle

All of these shapes and many more can be used to form patterns.

Take a minute to talk to your partner about what a pattern looks like and how they are made.

- A pattern is a series of objects that are repeated in the same way.

Here are examples of patterns:

Can you see the pattern below?

Find the patterns with your partner. Then draw the next five shapes for each.

Choose the next shape by clicking on a dark blue button.

Let’s look at something else.

There are so many things that can be made into patterns.

Talk with your partner and think of at least five unusual things that you can use to create patterns.

Patterns can also fill large spaces, they do not have to be in a straight line!

SLIDE

I’m done learning these terms!

TURN

FLIP

SYMMETRY

Watch the car slide across the screen!

Why is this a slide? In this case the car has moved forward. It has stayed the same size and shape and also faces the same direction as the original car.

Watch the tree flip!

Why is this a flip? The tree is flipped from top to

bottom. Each new tree is the same size

and shape as the original.

All of the shapes that we used earlier for patterns have symmetry!

Why do they have symmetry? These shapes are symmetrical because you can draw a line that will split the shape into two parts that are exactly the same.

Things that we turn are similar to turns in math!

When we look at honeycomb close up we can see a natural tessellation!

Look at your neighbor. You may not know it, but their body has symmetry and so does yours.

Back to Main Menu

Where is the imaginary line that divides your body into two parts?

Mary and Melody have symmetry. We both have:

2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 arms, 2 legs and 2 feet

-There are so many things that are symmetrical about our bodies!

Melody

On your worksheet you will see many objects.

Put an X through the objects that you and your partner feel cannot be tessellated.

These are pictures of tessellationsthat we found at our school. You

might want to look for tessellations in your classroom or at home.

One last thing about tessellations!

Look at some more shapesthat can be tessellated!

Some of them have been tessellated on the page. All of the shapes can

be tessellated because they fit togetherwithout any gaps!

Click here to see a tessellation found in nature!

What I seeis up to me!Tessellation!Help me think of thingsit can be.Tessellation!

It is a fun word to say…Tessellation!Math and artcome together and play.Tessellation!

TessellationHas no gaps andit has no end.Tessellation!

This is a tessellation because the triangle is repeated over and overfilling the space without any gaps.

Many objects can be tessellated.

All it takes is many of one object that fit together like a puzzle.

A circle cannot be used for a tessellation because when you fit

them together there are many gaps.

Why is this a flip? This is a flip because thepink moon has been flipped across an imaginary line andthe new red moon is upsidedown!
