1. President’s Message – September 2016 - - continued - -

We have all heard the challenge posed by our new Global Chairperson of the Board, Angela Witzany, who advises us that “our ability to remain relevant hinges on ceaseless attention to organizational priorities” within each of the organizations that we serve. She uses the motto “Audit Never Sleeps” to emphasize how important this is for all auditors, not just the CAE, to be constantly aware of strategic and emerging risks to our organizations. In order for us to do this well, we need to be diligent in our continuing education and training. The LI Chapter Board of Governors reflected on her message when we developed the annual training program for 2016-2017.

Long Island Chapter Programs for 2016/2017: We have made an extensive effort to build a program that includes new topics in the areas of compliance, internal audit, financial reporting, Information Technology and fraud. A synopsis of our program topics follows:

“Mastering the Five Tiers of Audit Competency: the Essence of Effective Auditing” – author Ann Butera will walk us through attainment of audit competency and how this improves our ability to add value to our organizations. This is her first book, which can be purchased at a chapter- subsidized price during this program.

Human Resource Compliance Risks – we will receive the latest update on the compliance aspects of the Affordable Care Act and other internal control matters related to human resources.

Annual Fraud Conference – this conference will be on Wednesday, November 16th. We will have a full day dedicated to sharpening our fraud awareness and detection skills.

Sensing Risks for CRMAs and Chief Risk Officers – this new topic highlights a technical discipline that some organizations are using to help predict future risk events.

COSO Update – the recently issued update and the background of COSO will be covered.

Data Analytics and Strategy for Continuous Monitoring – auditors are adding value by implementing useful data analytics. This discussion will offer insight into how to implement this process and examples of applications.

Annual IT Conference – we will have a full day dedicated to the most useful IT material for internal auditors.

Annual Conference – Mr. Richard Chambers, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Internal Auditors, will be our keynote speaker. We will have the PSEG COO discuss their plan for continued services for LI; there will be an update on Lease Accounting Standards and Revenue Recognition Standards, as well as a discussion on Ethics and Compliance.

We anticipate an exciting year and hope you will join us for your continued education and professional development. The Long Island Marriott in Melville has become our home away from home and where we will host our training events again this year. New for this year, we have rearranged the conference presentation room layout and the audio visual technology so that your ability to see and hear speakers and their presentational materials will be enhanced.

3. IIA 75th Anniversary NYC Conference Recap ~ July 2016

IIA’s 75th

~ Event Synopsis

The 75th Anniversary of the Institute of Internal Auditors was celebrated at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City July 17 thru 20. A three day sequence of educational programming by noted speakers, an expansive presentation of professional exhibits of products and services combined with a stellar variety of dining and entertainment events. Some 2,300 participants, volunteers, exhibitors and speakers from all over the world took part in this 75th anniversary celebration. This celebration was a testimony to the beginnings of the IIA in New York City 75 years ago in December 1941 when eleven Internal Auditors first met to initiate the IIA we know today. However, our IIA today numbers 180.000 members from 170 countries – many members and countries were in attendance at the conference to honor the anniversary whose motto that states: “Internal Audit Rising . . . 75 years of Progress Through Sharing “.

IIA’s 75th

~ Conference Kickoff

Every special occasion strives to mark its beginning with a designated notable event. With typical creative

aplomb the IIA “Kicked-Off” their 75th

celebration on June 30th

from the floor of the New York Stock

Exchange thus notifying the entire world of the start of its 75th

anniversary.

Representatives of the IIA and IIA Chapter officers from near and far gather at the Stock Exchange opening to “Ring the Bell” to start trading (see photo-right). Of course this was noted – clued by the IIA banner behind the group – around the world that day. Waldo is not in this picture – but “where is Ellen ?” –“where is Pinak?”- Ellen Caravella, president of the Long Island IIA Chapter, was at the “Bell-Ringing” ceremony – (Hint: look under IIA Logo in center of picture), along with Pinak Guha, Board of Governor member (look to right of Ellen). Both ably represented us at the NYSE.

IIA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ‘KICKOFF’ –

NY STOCK EXCHANGE FLOOR

Our group of Internal Audit representatives occupy the floor of the New York Stock Exchange ( see photo – left ) to further designate the start of the 75th Anniversary of the Institute of Internal Auditors – soon to commence a short distance from the Exchange at the Javits Convention Center July 17 thru 20, 2016..

IIA’s 75th

~ Volunteers and Supporting Activities

No event approaching the size of the IIA’s 75th Anniversary program can be carried-off without a host of supporting personnel working behind the scenes. Activities supporting the conference in this way were tasks like information-bag stuffing, preparing program presentation areas and etc. Once the program started – volunteers were in the midst of the melee directing crowd flow, answering questions, logging attendees into conference rooms, etc. A large part of this support staff were volunteers from IIA chapters. Some volunteers were even from foreign countries – but many were drawn from Chapters in the Tri-State area . . . with many volunteers from our own Long Island Chapter ‘lending a hand’. Volunteer work started on the Friday and Saturday before the conference start. The IIA provided nifty tee-shirts, with the IIA Conference emblem fashionably tailored over the heart. The strikingly chic color, a glaring scarlet, made it very hard to miss seeing a volunteer on the floor mixed-up with the business casual and formal wear of the International attendees. This fashion slant also makes it quite unsuitable to wear the tee shirts again – except on foggy Valentine’s Day celebrations.

IIA’s 75th

~ Program Content and Entertainment

It goes without saying that the technical programming was of the highest caliber. Technical topics ranged from the global economy to making sense of complex change in the board room. Keynote speakers, general sessions and specific conference room tracked presentations were interspersed with scheduled breakout sessions where attendees could network and socialize – the coffee and snacks were not bad either. A served sit-down daily lunch on the Javits Conference Center floor was one of the loudest ‘mess-hall’ sounds and scenes imaginable – over 2,000 hungry auditors in one place ! A 75th Anniversary gala included a reception, dinner and after dinner party featuring a ten-piece band, New York street entertainers and ‘special’ festive items ( souvenir photo booths, jugglers, magicians, etc.). Special tours of all sorts of corners of the ‘Big Apple’ were arranged for visitors from out of town.

IIA’s 75th

~ Long Island Chapter Volunteers On Site

Long Island Chapter Volunteers listed with the 75th event were: Kitty Craig, Biju Beegum, Rocky Shankar, Bill Mannix, Gary Jendras, Pinak Guha, Robert Skirkanich, Ellen Caravella, Alexander Scannella, Russel Safersein & Vikas Dutta. Note that this list may not be complete – and some listed may not have actually been able to serve – but this is our Chapter’s noted contribution to the 75th IIA Event.

Shown ( photo above-right) on the floor of the exhibit area at the Conference are (left to right): Biju Beegum; Kitty Craig; and, Bill Mannix.

Showing off their fashionista taste, ( photo above left) Long Island Chapter volunteers pose to premiere next Valentine’s day in their 75th Anniversary Conference volunteer shirts. Volunteers pictured are ( left to right): Russel Safersein; Rocky Shankar; and, Bob Skirkanich.

Besides the fashion golf shirt, volunteers were afforded the opportunity to attend a one day session for CPE

credits. As an additional show of support – our Long Island Chapter also sponsored a banner proudly

announcing our support for all to see in the halls of the Javits Convention Center.

IIA’s 75th

~ Anniversary Future - Things to Come

Long Island Chapter members who attended and/or volunteered at this year’s International Conference have many fond memories. All in our Chapter should plan to attend an International IIA Conference. If you missed this year’s Conference in New York City – no worry, be at the next one on July 21-26, 2017, in Sydney, Australia. Should you not be able to make Sydney, attend the following year’s Conference May 6-9, 2018 at the Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai. On reflection, the LIRR ride to this year’s conference doesn’t seem so long !

4. IIA District Meeting Notes ~ June 2016

Our Long Island Chapter participated the day-long IIA North East District meeting, June 20, 2016. The meeting was held courtesy of Protiviti in the Protiviti Conference Room at their New York City facility. Chapter representatives attended from the North Jersey, New York City, Westchester/Fairfield and of course our Long Island Chapter. Chapter president Ellen Caravella led our Long Island contingent.

The purpose of this once yearly District meeting is to introduce new technologies and services from IIA National, discuss district Chapter accomplishments, programs, best practices and plan cooperative efforts to promote the growth of Internal Auditing. IIA national representatives discussed the technology and use-progress of the IIA Event Management Tool. Chapter marketing, websites and communications were also active topics. Best practices to increase the effectiveness of academic relations, chapter meetings, seminars, conferences and related chapter events were discussed in a round table format.

Regards Chapter seminar progress – our Long Island Chapter was noted for having a high rate of attendance at our monthly seminars when compared to other District Chapters. Data presented below was discussed – note that the ‘per cent of membership attending’ adjusts for the fact that the other Chapters have more members than Long Island ( New York-3,678; North Jersey-1184; Westchester/Fairfield-497).

Average Attendance at Monthly Chapter Seminars – ( 2016/15 past

year’s data)

CHAPTER: Westchester/Fairfield North Jersey New York Long Island

ATTENDEES (avg): 25 50-75 120 114

MEMBERSHIP PER CENT:

5 % 7 % 3 % 28 %

Factors that enhance program attendance were discussed and approaches to improve speaker quality within affordable budgets and improve presentations at venues were key items. Improving the ability to clearly hear speakers and to easily view their presentation materials is an approach our Long Island Chapter is implementing to enhance seminar experience at our venue. The possibility of offering combined Chapter seminars at an as yet determined convenient site was also discussed.

Adhering to a detailed day-long written agenda, with times scheduled in ‘5-minute’ increments, the highlighting of the (then) soon to arrive International Conference in NYC and governance/leadership practices were concluding topics. One of the conference’s memorable events was the “working-lunch” served in the conference room with all the aroma that only truly New York cuisine can provide - - - a truly festive treat of unlimited Ray’s Pizza !

4. Long Island Logos in Transition

Our Long Island Chapter has seen our ‘logo’ undergo a virtual metamorphosis in the past year. Each change was somewhat unexpected- and the ‘symbolism’ of each logo has become

more ‘special’.

LOGO USE and SYMBOLISM ~ the story ~

LOGO GRAPHIC

Traditional pre-2015 Logo - - - ( see at right ) - - - Our Chapter designated logo for many years – this logo has lent a luster of dignity on our stationary, notices, forms, newsletters, and etc. As a familiar Chapter standard there was never a thought of changing this logo . . . until . . .

Silver Anniversary Logo - - - - - - ( see at right ) - - - October of 2015 marked our Chapter’s 25th Anniversary year – and to announce and maintain this excitement our October 2015 Anniversary Gala celebration a ‘commemorative’ silver anniversary logo was planned for use in place of our ‘traditional’ logo throughout 2015. This logo was to be ‘retired’ and the traditional logo returned – however, the coming 75th Anniversary of the IIA arriving in July, 2016 resulted in a request to maintain our anniversary logo until that time . . . unexpectedly . . .

SAPPHIRE Chapter Recognition Logo - - - ( see at right ) - - - Just when our Chapter was ready to return our ‘traditional’ logo in July 2016’ IIA Headquarters took note of our Chapter’s outstanding achievements over the years and noted that we had achieved the coveted status of a “SAPPHIRE” Chapter. So, just in time for a scheduled logo change we are now able to tout our achievement by displaying our ‘Sapphire’ logo. With the help of our membership we will maintain this status – and perhaps even achieve an as yet undefined higher logo level.

Whatever logo graphic is in vogue, our Long Island Chapter is always ready to serve the profession and our membership. The signature China may be changed from time to time, as outlined above, but our quality educational offerings and professional aid to our membership will always be our priority focus.
