We were recently reminded of how important a supportive mentor is to all those

budding actors and performers out there as they pursue a career in show business. We

recently enjoyed Catherine Forrester’s (pictured left) excellent performance in a

Suffragette play. Catherine was mentored by one of our very own previous Theatrix

teachers, Rosemary Goodman. Rosemary was involved at Theatrix for several years, both

as an administrator and teacher and now teaches privately.

Catherine has written about her experience of falling in love with theatre and getting into

drama school; we hope you agree it’s an inspiring story to share and join us in wishing

Catherine all the very best in her career:

“Becoming an Actor was never a question for me but my Secondary School did not offer

a Drama GCSE. I left school to do a BTEC National diploma in Performing Arts. I didn't

get into the three Drama Schools I applied for after a gap year. How was that going to

prepare me for the following years audition season? In stepped Rosemary Goodman. She

introduced me to a whole host of different playwrights and speeches and assessed my

skills from accents to improvisation. We worked together finding the right speeches that suited my casting. Rosemary

encouraged me to undertake a Grade 8 in Acting with Guildhall School of Speech and Drama (Theatrix is a registered centre

for these exams, now Trinity College London). A Distinction later and an accepted offer to study Actor training at the

University of Northampton … Rosemary's work was done. Rosemary gave me a huge advantage over my peers at

University. I now perform Shakespeare’s work regularly, and worked under Auriol Smith in her last ever production as joint

artistic director of The Orange Tree Theatre. I have missed holidays for auditions and faced rejection many times. I have

even swapped sexes and played a boy in a Channel Four documentary.

If I could offer any advice to prospective actors it would be to seek out a mentor, think of the time as continued training and

the money as an investment. I promise you it's worth it.”

Congratulations are in order for Theatrix alumnus Aurelia Gross who started university in

September. She secured an unconditional offer at her first choice, Royal Holloway,

University of London to study BA (Hons) Modern Languages.

Aurelia had attended Musical Theatre classes at Theatrix as well as having solo tuition.

She took her Trinity College London Grade 7 exam with Theatrix in July 2018, gaining a

merit. This gave her additional UCAS points which provided an important back-up for her

    second choice university.

We’re delighted that Aurelia is studying at her first choice university and it’s great to

know that, had she needed it, being part of Theatrix would have been very helpful indeed

    for those additional UCAS points.

This demonstrates the value and importance of Trinity College London exams which

Theatrix runs in Acting and Speaking as well as Musial Theatre and Performance Arts.

FAQs about the exams can be found on page 8.

Of her first half term at uni, Aurelia had this to tell us: “University life is absolutely

wonderful, I’m loving studying modern languages and of course the social life. It’s been really important to me to join the

Musical Theatre Society so I can continue with my love of singing. If I could give anyone a piece of advice for their GCSE and

A level years it would be to remember the importance of keeping up your outside interests. I certainly think that this helped

me to secure my place, as the university could see that I could balance work and play and it gave me lots to talk about at

    interview.”

Many congratulations Aurelia and enjoy the rest of your university experience!

If you would like to offer or suggest an

article to feature in ‘The Extra’ we would love to hear from you!

In the first of our new series we’re shining a spotlight on our wonderful teachers and the work they

do with students in class and during private lessons. We hope this helps you to get to know a bit

more about them and the skills your children are leaning from them during their time at Theatrix.

We’re starting off with Anna Jones and Emily Carhart who teach the Thursday classes. Anna also

    teaches two Saturday classes.

Can you tell us a theatre-related fact about you from when you were aged 5 – 19?

When I was ten I played the character of Susan-the little girl who doesn’t believe in Father

Christmas (and is proven wrong!) in the Abbey Theatre’s production of ‘Miracle on 34th

Street.’ It was great fun and very Christmassy!

What was the first part you played in a theatre show or musical and how old

    were you?

I was Mary in the Garden Field’s school musical nativity at the age of 8!! After that at the age

of nine, I played Oberon in a Theatrix production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Which actor would play you in the story of your life and why?

Michelle Williams, because I think she’s a versatile and brilliant actor, and feel like I grew up

with her playing Jen in Dawson’s Creek! She’s in some of my favourite films, and my husband

and I loved her film ‘Blue Valentine’ so much, that we even played a song from the sound-

track when we walked down the aisle at our wedding!

What’s your favourite thing about teaching at Theatrix?

I am fairly new to teaching at Theatrix but so far I have just loved getting to know the classes

and the way that the student have grown in confidence and team spirit as the term goes on.

I love how creative and hilarious the kids in my classes are!

Can you tell us some ‘insider-information’ about what’s going on to prepare for the showcase and exams?

We’ve been doing a lot of script work, and I’ve been spending time cutting scripts down, including the classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’, John

Godber’s ‘Bouncers’ and ‘Shakers’ and Andy Hamilton’s ‘The Exam’. In one class we’ve been working out how to make a rabbit hole out

of people, and in another we’ve been looking at lighting and costume. All very fun and exciting!

We’ll end on a Christmas-themed one – what’s your favourite Christmas song (carol or pop!)

It’s got to be ‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues, featuring Kirsty MacColl. It’s just a brilliant song, and as soon as I hear the first few

bars I get the Christmas vibe!

Can you tell us a theatre-related fact about you from when you were aged 5 – 19?

When I was 9 I started performing in the chorus with my dance school at the St Albans Christmas

pantomimes for a few years, so I always associate Christmas with being in a theatre and eating a lot of

    Quality Streets backstage.

What was the first part you played in a theatre show or musical and how old were you?

The first part I played in a theatre show was the school play of Hansel and Gretel when I was eight.

I got the role I desperately wanted (the witch) and had an absolute blast.

Which actor would play you in the story of your life and why?

We look nothing alike but I'd want Jessica Hynes to play me, just because I think she's an awesome

    actor and human being.

What’s your favourite thing about teaching at Theatrix?

One of my favourite things about teaching at Theatrix is that it is a community where everyone values

the joy of creativity and being silly! All the students have brilliant imaginations so the drama they

create is always unique and fun.

Can you tell us some ‘insider-information’ about what’s going on to prepare for the show-

    case and exams?

For the Kings, we are doing some really lovely work exploring 'The Secret Garden' both with scripts and through physical theatre and

devising pieces based on themes of nature and friendship that hold very true in the story. So their showcase performance will probably

consist of a blend of script work and the students own creativity. For the Lincolns we've been trying out various challenging scripted

pieces, such as Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare extracts and we're also going to start having a look at a more contemporary text to

    contrast with these.

We’ll end on a Christmas-themed one – what’s your favourite Christmas song (carol or pop!)

My favourite Christmas song of all time, is undoubtedly 'Fairy-tale of New York' because it's deeply moving but also ridiculously catchy.

Watch out for a ‘spotlight on’ some more of our teachers next time...

There is plotting backstage in readiness for our annual showcase in March - The Play's the Thing...

Scripts and plays are being rustled up, stories are abounding, improvisations bustling in our minds, there is honing of acting and musical

skills with some fantastic training exercises and games to engage, surprise, delight and entertain our audience, with both serious and comic

drama. The Play's the Thing is shaping the creative talent of our wonderful students both senior and junior to create our ninth annual

    Theatrix Showcase.

The stage is set at the Abbey theatre - with all the accoutrements of a professional theatre. Glam dressing rooms, a proper stage

manager's desk, highly computerised lighting and sound, costumes, props, call buttons, and backstage monitors to see the action on the

    stage.

And offstage in the wings, the tutors with their heads full of ideas and directions as directors of this pageant that they want

passionately to enthuse their young charges with!

But, further off “offstage“, some of our tutors have other engagements in their theatre careers as well. For several, the pantomime

season calls, (oh yes it does!) and as working actors (oh yes they are!) off they go over Christmas; but, like Santa, bringing back with them

the gifts of their experiences. Emma, Nicola and Harry - brilliantly trained actor /teachers/ musical theatre virtuosos take their temporary

exits from us towards the professional stage.

But the show must go on and all is not lost. For, in their stead, we have some brilliant understudies to nurture their work until they

soon return. So, enter stage left Duncan Kennedy, a Theatrix Alumnus, currently directing Bugsy Malone at the Abbey Theatre and a film

and media student to boot - stepping in at the last to act out their parts.

But staying within our repertory and taking main roles we have the wonderful training and guidance and inspiration of Anna, Amber,

Emily, Alex (all also Theatrix Alumni), Claire, Donna and Sinéad.

And their biogs in the programme would read:

    • Anna is a former teacher at STAGS and well versed in the academic levels of theatre studies

    • Amber is pursuing Viking Studies at London University (so plenty of rich story sagas there)

    • Alex is studying for an MA at the Central School of Speech and Drama and passing that rich seam of learning to Theatrix

    • Emily is a director of Black Box Theatre together with Amber (anyone see their amazing Julius Caesar in the Roman Amphitheatre this summer?)

    • Claire not only is a brilliant tutor as everyone else and a committed scout leader, she is also currently qualifying as a fully-fledged lawyer (so plenty of courtroom dramas there)

    • Donna is a professional actor who trained at the Drama Studio London

    • Sinéad not only directs and stage manages at the Abbey Theatre but is also a Fashion and Design student at Oaklands College

Crewing our show, but in no way motley, is Rachel our amazing new administrator and stage manager extraordinaire (a former

administrator to none other than the Almeida theatre) trained and assisted by Dennis who is taking a “resting role” in this year's event

but ready to prompt and speak up in case the rest of us can't be heard above the babble of excitable but talented and charming young

castlings. In the highly sophisticated lighting and sound hub there is Molly who has helped thrice now and she is so on the ball that it

glitters, along with her wonderful lighting designs. And we extend a warm welcome to a newcomer Andrew who is taking up the reins,

from his friend Ellis last year, to control the music and sound effects.

And of course we cannot forget our wonderful Extras, the volunteers who invisibly and loyally come to guard and assist our

children backstage with their seamless chaperoning skills.

And as producer and mentor I look forward to a programme of high quality drama to present to you - the parents, families and

friends of our young Thespians. The curtain will rise to show a medley of scenes which in the past have included works from Bertolt

Brecht to Beatrix Potter, from The Lion King to Greek Myth, from William Shakespeare to Peter Pan and from Henrik Ibsen to the

Wizard of Oz. A varied, rich and challenging menu for your discerning tastes. And I hope you, our lovely audience, without whom we

couldn't perform any of this, will enjoy the evenings' performances.

And in the last act we applaud you for sending your children to Theatrix where we

importantly, earnestly (a Wilde pun) coax and train them to perform to the very best of their

ability for your entertainment. What could be better and more enjoyable for the young cast

than doing all this sophisticated stuff while playing!

The play really is The THING!

The Showcase runs from March 21 to 23 on the main stage at the Abbey Theatre.

The work performed in this Showcase is set to be part of the Trinity College London

exams which will take place at the Abbey Theatre in the Studio on 2 and 3 April 2019 during the

day. Please see page 8 for FAQs about the exams.

Our annual Showcase gives all our students the

opportunity to perform on the main stage to a public

audience. This showcase explores “play” and “the play”

through the eyes of children and young people. There will

be a medley of scripted scenes, adaptations, original

writing, dance, movement, singing, sketches and

    improvisations.

Work will start in every class in January, but to give the

show the professional polish that we expect from

everyone (and they expect from us!) and importantly to

ensure the safety for our young actors, we need to be

sure that everything is in place during the week of final

    rehearsals and performances.

Please check all the dates and details. For your child to

participate we need you to complete and return the

Consent Form on the next page to us as soon as possible.

PROGRESSION FROM ONE GRADE TO THE NEXT

We base our detailed decisions in respect of examination

entries for individual and groups of students on a set of judgments

to determine which examination subject and grade will most

    contribute to the students' development.

Whilst it is frequently appropriate for a student or class to

progress from one grade to the next higher grade, it is not

automatic that they should do so. Accordingly, a student or a class

that have achieved one grade in a particular subject may not then

automatically be entered at a higher grade. We may judge that it is

better for the student or class to broaden their platform of skills

at the same grade in another subject area before progressing to a

    higher grade.

Similarly we may judge that students who have achieved a grade

in a group examination will be best served by taking the more

challenging pairs examination at the same grade.

    INDIVIDUAL AND PAIRS EXAMINATIONS

We enter students for individual and pairs examinations at any

grade appropriate to their age, experience and ability.

However, in order to meet the challenges these examinations

present, we can only prepare younger students through individual

and pairs tuition which is more costly than class tuition.

Older students who are able to work relatively autonomously

may prepare for pairs examinations within a class under a tutor’s

supervision provided the class is of modest size.

Alternatively, older students wishing to specialise in individual or

pairs examinations can opt for shared tuition (a pair of students or

a threesome) in which tuition can be better tailored to individual

    needs.

    WHY OUR STUDENTS TAKE EXAMINATIONS

Public examinations are an integral part of the Theatrix curriculum.

Practical (performance) examinations provide our students with a

learning focus, objective goals and benchmarks of achievement.

However, Theatrix is neither exam driven nor results driven. Ra-

ther, we see examinations as a means for a student to build a

broad platform of skills upon which to base further progression.

    TRINITY COLLEGE EXAMINATIONS

Theatrix students take Trinity College examinations in Acting and

Speaking, Communication Skills, Musical Theatre and Performance

Arts from Young Performers Certificate to Grade 8. Theatrix is an

official examination centre for Trinity College practical grade

examinations. Normally we hold examinations twice a year at the

Abbey Theatre. This is convenient for Theatrix candidates.

    RECOGNISED QUALIFICATIONS AND UCAS POINTS

All Trinity College examinations are recognised within the NQF

(National Qualifications Framework). Grades 6-8 individual and

pairs merits and distinctions attract UCAS points. All successful

candidates in the Grade examinations receive certificates showing

their level of achievement as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

    EXAMINATION SUBJECTS

The Trinity College examination subjects Theatrix students are

entered for are shown in the table below. Each subject tests a

different range of skill sets. You can access the full Examination

    Syllabuses at www.trinitycollege.co.uk

    OUR EXAMINATION ENTRY APPROACH

Theatrix students are only entered for exams appropriate to their

age, experience and ability. Typically, a Theatrix student will be

entered for one examination each year. Entry levels are broadly

guided by the framework set by Trinity College - see summary

table below. You can access the full guidance table at

    www.trinitycollege.co.uk

    PROGRESSION AND PASS RATES

Our youngest students may take Young Performers Certificate or

Initial Grade group exams. Typically our students will start at

Grade 1 and may progress to Grade 8 by age 16 to 18. Initially,

students will take group exams, usually involving the whole class.

Later they may take smaller group, individual or pairs exams.

Consistently, our students achieve pass rates in excess of 98%.

Most students achieve a Merit grade or above.

    TERMS AND CONDITIONS

All fees are payable in advance. They can be paid by BACS or sent

prior to the beginning of term to:

Theatrix, 198 Sandridge Road, St Albans, AL1 4AL

or be brought to the first lesson. We are sure you will appreciate

that as a small business we depend on prompt payment to ensure

we can continue to provide a high standard of service. We reserve

the right not to admit a student to a class where outstanding fees

have not been paid. We also reserve the right to charge an adminis-

trative fee of £5.00 if we have to send parents a second outstanding

    fees reminder.

We have a waiting list for most classes, so you will understand

that a half-term's notice is required, in writing if a student

intends to leave. Otherwise, we reserve the right to charge a half

-term's fee in lieu of notice, unless a mutual arrangement has been

    agreed.

If at any time you should wish to visit a drama class you may do so

by prior arrangement. Please feel free to discuss with us any query

or concerns you may have regarding the progress being made in

    class work or examinations.

We reserve the right to ask any student to leave the school if

their behaviour is disruptive or otherwise adversely affecting the

    progress of the class.

A student may not leave a lesson when it is in progress unless by

prior arrangement with the parent(s). Please ensure that your child

is collected promptly at the end of each lesson. While we do our

best to keep an eye on all students who have finished their classes,

we cannot guarantee 100% supervision once the next class has

    started.

We do ask that parents notify us if their child is going to be absent

from a lesson. We will inform parents of two consecutive absences

of which we have not been notified.

We do ask that all students take great care in respect of Abbey

Theatre property. We are fortunate we are able to rehearse and

perform in a working theatre and certain rules must be adhered to.

All students are requested to pay special attention to keeping the

theatre clean and tidy, and to make sure they have left nothing

behind. We do have a small amount of lost property, but we can-

not accept responsibility for anything left behind once the classes

have finished. A fire drill is performed each term.

    METHOD OF PAYMENT

Included on your termly invoice is a guide to paying all Theatrix bills

by BACS. Of course, if you wish to continue to pay by cash or

cheque you are welcome to do so.

Please make all cheques payable to Theatrix. Payment, with

completed invoice return slip should be handed in on the first day

of term in a sealed envelope with the student's name and

class written clearly on the front. If you are paying by cash,

please ask for a receipt as mistakes cannot be rectified later if there

    is no record of payment.

All other payments, e.g. for public examinations should also be sent

in a sealed envelope with the student's name and class

    written clearly on the front.

If any parent is going through a period of financial difficulty, we are

always happy to try to help, and come to some mutual agreement

rather than lose a student. Please call Rosemarie Partridge on

01727 860217 or email Rachel on [email protected] who will

be happy to talk to you.

Official Theatrix photographers have customarily taken photos and

during performances of students’ work for parents, production

rehearsals and public performances. These photographs are used

for archival, educational and publicity purposes, our Facebook page

and to illustrate our publications, e.g. play programmes. To date we

have received no objections to this practice. On the contrary, stu-

dents and parents welcome a record of a performance.

We believe it is important that parents consent as to whether or

not we should be taking and using such photographs. This also in-

cludes photos and short videos which may be taken in class. For

the avoidance of doubt, please could you let us know your views by

completing and returning the slip below.

    • The blue side door will be locked once classes or rehearsals have started

    • If a student arrives after the start time they will need to ring the doorbell (to the left-hand side) to be let in

    • In the unlikely event that, after a short while, there is no answer then please contact their teacher using the contact number found

on the Information Sheet sent via email with the termly newsletter

    • The door will be opened 10 minutes prior to the end of the class or rehearsal to allow access for parents of students being col-

lected and students arriving for the next class or rehearsal

    • Authorised Theatrix personnel remain by the side door during the changeover between classes

If you are collecting a child, please ensure you enter through the blue side to meet them in person. Our teachers will not allow a child to leave the

    premises alone.

The Abbey Theatre is a public building and as such the main front doors are open during opening hours. This means they are open on

Saturday morning from 9.30am - 12noon. No unauthorised visitors are allowed to access the teaching spaces during class hours. Access is

restricted to authorised Theatrix and Abbey Theatre personnel only.
