In addition, the school counselors will finish up course selections with the students to identify the teaching areas needed to meet the student requests. Finally, Mercer is very excited to announce that it has been selected as a pilot school, second phase, for the Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) initiative. To be accepted, Mercer had to submit an application to meet certain criteria. Among many items to check- off, Mercer had to demonstrate its commitment to integrate technology to enhance the curriculum. Additionally, Mercer had to work with the students on completing instruction in Digital Citizenship and Responsibilities. This work has taken place in Keyboarding classes, and through Media Specialist and Technology Resource Teacher’s lessons. As a result, the bandwidth at Mercer will be expanded to include an open network for students and staff to access during the school day for instructional purposes with their own personal devices. Obviously, Mercer will need to manage and leverage the technology carefully. An administrative meeting will be take place with all of the pilot schools led by the LCPS technology department to learn more specifics about the implementation of BYOT. Once the information is known, Mercer will share it with parents, students and staff. The target date to begin the pilot program will be sometime after Spring Break. Stay tuned for more information, including some parent information nights for BYOT. It is very exciting! In This Issue... Dear Mercer Parents/Guardians,

I hope you are surviving the cold winter. Hopefully, spring is right

around the corner with its warmer weather to create some type of

normal schedule for the staff and students. This spring, Mercer will be hosting the annual PTSA Mercer

Madness, the three-on-three basketball tournament with lots of

excitement. This will take place on March 20th in the Mercer gyms.

Come on out and have some fun with the family. Food and drinks

will be on sale in the cafeteria. Hopefully, we have seen the last of the snow as the students head

into the testing season. First up is the Writing SOL for eighth grade

students. The multiple choice portion begins on March 2nd, followed

by the short paper later that same week. Look for more testing

information on the Mercer Homepage and don’t forget to “like” us

on Facebook (we are almost to 500) to see great photos of all of the

wonderful things happening here. This spring will also begin Mercer’s preparations for the next school

year. We will make visits to each of the seven feeder schools to talk

to the rising sixth grade students. Instrument nights for the rising

sixth grade students will also continue. In addition, the school

counselors will finish up course selections with the students to

identify the teaching areas needed to meet the student requests. Finally, Mercer is very excited to announce that it has been selected

as a pilot school, second phase, for the Bring Your Own Technology

(BYOT) initiative. To be accepted, Mercer had to submit an

application to meet certain criteria. Among many items to check-

off, Mercer had to demonstrate its commitment to integrate

technology to enhance the curriculum. Additionally, Mercer had to

work with the students on completing instruction in Digital

Citizenship and Responsibilities. This work has taken place in

Keyboarding classes, and through Media Specialist and Technology

Resource Teacher’s lessons. As a result, the bandwidth at Mercer

will be expanded to include an open network for students and staff to

access during the school day for instructional purposes with their

own personal devices. Obviously, Mercer will need to manage and

leverage the technology carefully. An administrative meeting will

be take place with all of the pilot schools led by the LCPS

technology department to learn more specifics about the

implementation of BYOT. Once the information is known, Mercer

will share it with parents, students and staff. The target date to begin

the pilot program will be sometime after Spring Break. Stay tuned

for more information, including some parent information nights for

School Wide Assembly- Wednesday, March 4

“Behind the Label,” based on an original book of poetry and art of the same title, uses vignettes and monologues to explain

what it’s like to live with various challenges from Autism to Down syndrome, ADD to anxiety. The script comes from the

brave young people who struggle and triumph over their challenges every day. This powerful show teaches about

challenges, acceptance, empathy and awareness. If you have time please check out the website: http://
