Dear Parents and Caregivers,
There is something very special about the end of a year –
and in particular about the end of a school year. A very
different atmosphere fills the corridors compared to that
which is normally present, and it also seems as if the
volume is ratcheted up a notch or two. But so it should
be.
This final week of the academic year started off on a
suitably celebratory note, as we enjoyed the Year 5 and
6 Prizegiving ceremony. As with the Year K-2 and Year 5
and 6 events, the tone of the evening was both joyous
and yet also appropriately formal. We honoured the
hard work of our students throughout the year as well as
the positive contribution which each of them has made
to the positive atmosphere which has characterised
2018.
It was also a time for our Year 6s to reflect on the many
Prizegiving ceremonies they have attended during their
time in the Primary School, as well as to remember the
countless memories which have been made during
those years. Their group has added much to the Reddam
House family and we are appreciative of the lead they
have taken during this year. To have a positive senior
group in the school makes a huge difference, as their
spirit and enthusiasm filters through to the younger Year
groups, and as such we will certainly miss them.
We wish all our Year 6s everything of the best as they
head off to High School. Although it will have challenges
of its own – and many exciting moments too – we have
no doubt that the firm foundations which have been laid
here in the Primary School and at home will see this
cohort of students quickly finding their wings and really
soaring.
We also thank all the Year 6 parents for their positive
contribution to the lives of their children and to the
school at large. It has been tremendous to see their
enthusiastic support at so many school functions, and this
has added much to the sense of family which we hope
for here at Reddam. We shall miss seeing your faces
around and we wish you every joy in the future as you
continue the exciting journey of walking alongside your
child through the remainder of his or her school years.

The Prizegiving also allowed some time to reflect on the role of the incoming Year 6s and on the lead
we trust they will give to the rest of the school. We are excited to see their servant leadership in
action, as they show empathy and kindness to the younger children, while inspiring them through
their spirited, energetic attitudes.

The whole school has benefitted from this during the year, particularly in those events which have
required mass participation. One only has to think of the various sporting carnivals, which were a
blaze of colour and a cacophony of enthusiastic cheering. Or of the two exceptional dramatic
productions, which filled the stage with vibrancy, song and dance. These really have been very
special events, which will live long in the memory. There have been countless other highlights during the year, which have been too numerous to
mention. Incursions and excursions have added depth and interest to the exceptional work done by
our teachers in the classroom. Camps have built relationships and encouraged students to move out
of their comfort zones. And the vast array of cultural and sporting activities really has meant that
there was something for everyone.
Life is an adventure and this is particularly so for children. There is always something new to learn or to
try, some new activity to attempt, someone new to meet. We would all do well to take Roald Dahl’s
advice to “watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you. Because the greatest secrets are
always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

Some news to end the year off on a highlight. Some of our water polo girls topped off a highly
successful season by making the finals of their division, which was played on Saturday against St
Catherine's. It really was an excellent game and, although the team went down 8-5, they were proud
recipients of the silver medals. The Reddam 4 team which did so well is:
Yasmin Rubinsztein, Tilly Barnes, Audrey Kitchen, Mia Lok, Maggie Barnes, Estelle Cantwell, Jemma
Wise, Charlotte Budd and Daisy Singleton.
Congratulations girls!
The teachers and I have had the privilege of seeing some of this magic through the eyes of your
children. As they have stretched their horizons, broadened their knowledge, learned new skills and
made new friends, we have been fortunate to be there alongside them. We have thoroughly
enjoyed seeing them grow during the year, both physically and in their confidence. We have appreciated the support of all in the Reddam House Primary community – parents,
caregivers, family members and friends. Your enthusiastic encouragement has meant so much to the
students and their success has been directly proportional to your presence at the many events in
which they have participated. Thank you for all your positive input and for the way your interactions
with the teaching, coaching and administrative staff have added to the mood in the school. It is
much appreciated.

My thanks too to the teachers, whose belief in
the students and concern for their well-being
goes far beyond what is expected of a teacher.
Their colourful classrooms perfectly match the
exuberance with which they have engaged with
the students. There is no doubt that the
foundations of self-belief, respect for others, and
an understanding that hard work pays off, have
been established through the interactions our
teachers have had with the students. The very
special atmosphere which characterises this
group of staff is unique and I am most
appreciative of all they mean to the school.
I have also appreciated the considerable efforts
of all our administrative and other support staff,
who have been a tremendous help throughout
the year. Their smiling faces and cheerful
demeanour added much to the school, as they
went about their business of ensuring that the
systems ran effectively and the campus
continued to look its best. My sincere thanks to all
these very special people.
The Year 6s had a memorable time together
at Luna Park yesterday, as they celebrated
friendship and enjoyed each other’s company.
Hopefully these will be just a few extra memories
to add to their considerable experiences in the
Primary School. Then, all our students ended off
the school year in the best way possible today as
they had a good time at the picnic. The mood
was festive and the anticipation of happy
holidays palpable. I wish all of our students, parents and members of
staff a wonderful holiday. May the time spent
with family and friends, and lazy summer days, be
truly special for you all. Dee Pitcairn Principal

KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten had a wonderful Prize Giving ceremony last week, where we had the
opportunity to reward and acknowledge the hard work of the Kindy students. Each child
proudly walked up on the stage, shook hands with Mrs Pitcairn and received their awards.
This week, they also took home their completed portfolios and had the opportunity to reflect
on how far they had come since the beginning of the year. The Kindergarten teachers are
extremely proud of how hard each of our students have worked this year.
On Wednesday, we headed out to our end of year Bowling Party. With great excitement and
many stories, we all had lots of fun and enjoyed spending the last day together.
As this year draws to a close, our classrooms are looking dull and bare, it is with a little
sadness we say Goodbye to our Kindergarten pupils. They have been a special group of
students who have certainly made their teachers very proud. We look forward to watching
them learn and grow in Year 1.
The final days of the term in Year 1 have continued with excitement, enthusiasm and
eagerness. The students reminisced about each of their memorable learning journeys this
year, sharing all of their special and most unforgettable moments. Favourite activities have
included; the taste experiment, learning multiplication, our excursions, making new friends,
science experiments, the K-2 production and so much more.
Year 1 consolidated their Music studies this
week through playing a range of Music
Games. Students used their understanding of
hand signs, known repertoire, beat and
rhythm in a game of Music Bingo.
They demonstrated their understanding of
performing beat, rhythm, and pitch through
Music Parachute games. To conclude, they
showed their team and movement skills by
dancing the 'Heel and Toe' Polka with their
peers.
We have all had such a wonderful year and the students are more than ready for their next
adventure in Year 2! Happy holidays!

YEAR 4
It has been a busy few days for the students in their final week of Year 4. On Friday the
students visited Our Big Kitchen. In keeping with OBK's philosophy, ‘The Power of Giving’ and
Reddam House’s ethos, ‘We Shall Give Back’, our students learnt how they can help,
empower and nourish those in need in the community. They were given the opportunity to
bake chocolate scrolls, apple strudel and biscuits as well as make cards for sick children, as
part of a meaningful volunteering experience. It was a fabulous, fun and enriching
experience for everyone.
The students have come to the end of their time in Year 4 and it has truly been a wonderful
year filled with amazing moments and lots of learning. Here’s what a few of the students had
to say about some of their highlights of the year.
Olive Begg
“My favourite part of
the year was when we
went to the Blue
Mountains on camp
and we saw the Three
Sisters. We made so
many new friends and
it was an amazing way
to start the year.”
Otto Hooke
“I liked The Athletics
Carnival because I got
to hang out with all my
friends, compete and
get house points.”
Sam Dubossarsky
“I enjoyed doing
exams because it
pushed me to do
better academically.”
Eva Balafas
“The best part of the
year was going to the
beach for Picnic Day.
It was a good way to
spend time with friends
and an awesome way
to end the year.”
The Year 4 teachers wish all students and families a happy and safe holiday.

YEAR 5 & 6 ENGLISH
This week, Year 6 students learnt as they rode.
Luna Park provided a fun filled opportunity for
students to apply their mathematical skills
and knowledge to answer questions based
on their observations and experience.
Some of the questions included, which
direction the Tango Train first travelled in and
how many revolutions occurred with each
ride. Students had to consider why the
heaviest person should sit on the outside of
the carriages and on average how long
each ride took.
Time was taken to sketch, classify and
describe 3 dimensional objects seen in the
centre of the Tango Train. On Coney Island it
was wonderful to see students counting how
many segments were on the inner wheel of
the joy wheel and calculating the size of the
inner angle of each segment.
The ride that was, in Mia Lok’s words, ‘most
terrifying’, was the Hair Raiser. This ride is
reported to be 50 metres above Sydney
Harbour!
The Question:
Does this mean the tower is actually 50m tall?
The Answer:
The ride is actually 50 metres above sea level
although the tower is 37 metres in height. If
you look from the water level of the harbour
to the platform of the ride, then you can see
the 13 metre difference. The advertising
makes it sound taller than it is so instead of
enjoying the thrills of a 50 metre drop the thrill
seekers are enjoying a much shorter drop!
This excursion was a well-deserved way to
complete Stage 3 Mathematics. In addition,
our students were responsible and respectful
in true Reddam style.
Good luck Year 6 2018!
