BAYCLIFF CIVIC LEAGUE MEETING WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 7 PM

Alanton School Cafeteria

WELCOME FALL!

Hello Baycliff Friends and Neighbors,

It took some time for spring to end and bring us the warm weath-

er and all the activities that go along with summer. It’s a busy time of

year, and it’s now hard to believe it’s now almost over and time to

start thinking about getting ready for fall and the kids going back to

school or off to college.

The 6th Annual Baycliff National Night Out on August 5th was a

huge success! There were six block parties that included various

cook outs, drinks in the driveway, and entertainment featuring our

own Cooper Browning! The morning started out with rain, but it

cleared up to be a beautiful evening, and everyone had a great time.

At 7 p.m., the Virginia Beach Police Department arrived with Officer

McGruff, who joined in our vintage car and decorated bicycle and

stroller parade. Much fun was had by all ages! A BIG THANK YOU

to the many volunteers that coordinated, planned and prepared the

great food. Special thanks to all of the Block Captains and Sharon

Haring for organizing this event and for all they do all year long.

Mark your calendar and join your neighbors at our next events!

The Fall Festival is scheduled for Sunday, October 19th. Anne Wright

has volunteered to be the Committee Chairman coordinating this

event. Be sure to also save the date for our annual Santa Visit on

Saturday, December 20th.

Our next civic league meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sep-

tember 17th, at 7 p.m. in the Alanton Elementary School Cafeteria.

We invite everyone to come help us plan for the coming year. We still

need a civic league president and first vice-president, both key leader-

ship roles, as well as several chairpersons. If you would like to play a

pivotal role in shaping our community’s future or chair an event,

please come and learn more! All residents are encouraged to attend

this meeting and to help keep Baycliff a wonderful place to live.

Best Regards,

Janie Cecelic

AN APPEAL TO

THE BAYCLIFF COMMUNITY

Richard Dunning, Chairman Baycliff Dredging

[email protected]

For the last two years, the Baycliff Dredging Committee has worked very hard to inform its

neighbors on the condition of our shared waterway, Mill Dam Creek. We have met regularly with the

Baycliff Civic League Executive Board; presented numerous presentations at private homes; provid-

ed information at Baycliff Civic League meetings, in the Baycliff Bugle, resident mailings, and on

Baycliffwatch; surveyed homeowners; and met with city council and other city officials.

The dredging committee conducted a neighborhood-wide survey, which indicated overwhelming

support (77 percent of respondents), favoring dredging Mill Dam Creek. As a result of the over-

whelming support for dredging, the dredging committee evaluated a city SSD (special service dis-

trict) dredging proposal, and due to costs, proposed our own self-directed dredging initiative.

In order to keep our residents informed and abreast of matters, we set up our own Facebook

website, https://www.facebook.com/Baycliff.Dredging. To provide individual feedback, we set up our

own email address [email protected] .

Now it’s time for all our neighbors to do their part and tell us via their pledge card if they are will-

ing to proceed with this initiative or fail. Even if you don’t support this initiative, we want to hear back

from you. If you have not done so already, would you please consider doing your share to support

Pledge to Dredge with the suggested pledge amount for your household? All residents’ financial

support is needed! Please do not send us any money yet, as we are presently gauging community

support. We are almost ½ way to our goal; we have pledges of $139,310 of the $300,000 needed to

proceed. Once we have met our goal and have sent out binding pledge cards, households will have

up to two years to pay the balance. Pledges can be sent in monthly, quarterly, or all at once.

My neighbors Paul and Ginger Hryskanich own two homes on Mill Dam Creek. Paul and Ginger

are retired and have lived in Baycliff many years. They are wonderful neighbors. They recognize

the need to save our waterway. Their pledge at the Admirals Club level (two times) is a significant

investment. Paul and Ginger see their pledge as an investment to ensure that their grandkids will

have a non-tidal restrictive navigable water way to enjoy when they grow up.

We would like to thank those neighbors who have SACRIFICIALLY pledged. We still have not

heard from 67 percent of our community. Based on our analysis of pledges to date, those house-

holds on Mill Dam Creek and its canals are the KEY to whether this matter succeeds or fails,... AND

these are the homeowners who have most to gain. Although this matter is strictly voluntary, if the

households on Mill Dam Creek and its canals would give their suggested pledge, this initiative would

reach its goal.

Please fill out the included Pledge to Dredge Card below and send it in to 2013 Wood Hollow

Cove, VA. Beach, VA 23454 or contact us by email at [email protected] . Unless we

reach our goal (currently 300K), Pledge to Dredge will end on September 30, 2014. Now is your

household’s last chance to be go on record to support this matter. We have NEVER been closer.

Please “Pledge to Dredge Mill Dam Creek,” ensuring Baycliff’s future as a waterfront community

and strengthening Baycliff property values!

This is needed to gauge how much solid neighborhood-wide support we have. PLEDGE TO DREDGE ENDS SEPTEMBER 30TH! Richard Dunning, Chairman of Dredging Committee email “baycliff dredging” at [email protected] https://www.facebook.com/Baycliff.Dredging

Mill Dam Canal and the Baycliff boat ramp provide deep water access to all Baycliff residents and are valuable community assets, providing us recreational opportunities that non-waterfront neighbor-hoods cannot offer. The fun and convenience of being able to boat, jet ski, paddle board or fish so close to home make Baycliff a sought-after place to live and significantly increase our property values. However, in the four decades since the original dredging, tons of silt have accumulated and now se-verely limit the ability to use the boating canal and ramp at low tide. To correct this, the Baycliff Civic League has launched a self-dredging initiative. By working together, residents can raise the needed funds to redredge and restore our canal, ensuring Baycliff’s future as a desirable waterfront community. We ask all Baycliff households to promptly mail or drop off their pledge form indicating their pledge amount or intent not to pledge to Richard Dunning, 2013 Wood Hollow Cove, before Sep-tember 30th. You can also email this information to [email protected] Based on the response to this pledge campaign, we will know if there is enough financial support to continue further and get the necessary survey, permits, and counsel. We will also ask all participants to then sign a binding agreement to ensure that there is not a funding shortfall. As an incentive to donors, the boat ramp fee will be partially waived (see below), depending on the amount of pledge. Half of the pledge amount will be due on June 1, 2015, and the remainder will be due on June 1, 2016. All funds will be secured in a separate money market account. In accordance with Baycliff civic league by-laws, no funds over $1,000 will be spent without the recommendation of the Bay-cliff Civic League Executive Board and an approval vote by residents. In both June 2015 and June 2016, we will assess whether we are collecting sufficient funds to keep moving forward. If not, we will not proceed, and remaining funds will be returned to residents. Money for pledges may be given throughout the two-year time frame via the Baycliff treasurer.

Our Baycliff Resident Directory is being updated for 2015. Our directory is published every two years

and distributed FREE to every Baycliff home as a token of good will from the civic league. It lets us know

who our neighbors are, discover common bonds, and easily get in touch with one another. This encour-

ages neighborhood friendships and also increases community security. Our directory information is also

sent to the police and the rescue squad and is used to update their data bases, helping us in emergencies.

Assist us by promptly returning your Baycliff Directory Update Form, which appears on page 11. WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU, even if it is only to confirm that you have no changes! If you are unsure

whether or not you have already responded, please check page 10 for a list of residents who have updat-ed. Please help us make the new directory accurate!

PLEASE BE SURE TO PROVIDE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS so we can include you in Baycliffwatch and send you crime and safety alerts, civic league and community announcements. Your e-mail address

will not be listed in the directory and only used for civic league communications. You can learn more about

Baycliffwatch at www.baycliff.net If you are moving, we would be most grateful if you would notify us

ASAP and give this form to the NEW RESIDENT.

Publishing the directory takes the volunteers who generously produce this publication hundreds of

hours of their personal time and costs well over a thousand dollars. Publication costs are underwritten by

family sponsorships and by business ads sold by Baycliff volunteers. The civic league desperately needs a

Chairman to head the Advertising Committee and individuals to assist in getting business advertisers.

Many Baycliff neighbors are already supporting our publications through Baycliff Family Sponsorships

or business ads, and we sincerely thank them! Become a family sponsor with a donation of $25 to $100! If you are not already doing so, consider backing us as a family sponsor, placing an ad for your own com-

pany, or speaking to businesses your family uses and suggesting they advertise in the directory. By such

support, you boost Baycliff and enable the civic league to distribute the directory free.

Advertising in the directory is truly a great deal. Our directory is heavily used in homes for two whole

years and provides businesses with an inexpensive and effective way to tell us about their services. It also generates good will toward them as Baycliff supporters! A business card ad in the directory is only $15, a

quarter page ad is $25, a half page is $50, and a giant full page ad is $100. We also have special two year

combination “Directory Deal” ad packages for both the directory and newsletter that save advertisers 36%

off regular prices! For an advertising rate flier, to learn more about being a Family Sponsor, or to join the

Advertising Committee, please email [email protected] or call 481-5589.

PLEASE RECOMMEND CONTRACTORS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS! Michelle Baker

A list of “Recommended Contractors and Service Providers” is being prepared for the new 2015 Baycliff Neighborhood Directory. Many neighbors have already submitted businesses they believe have served them well. Thank you for your time and support in creating this valuable resource for our neighbor-hood! If you have had a first-rate experience with a contractor or service provider and believe they should be included on the list, please email the requested information below to Michelle Baker at [email protected] or call 460-1108 before the end of September 2014. Please provide the following information:

BAYCLIFF NEIGHBORS COME TOGETHER FOR NATIONAL NIGHT OUT Sharon Haring, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Photos by Mary Daddio, Henry Thompson, Dove Payman and Christine Westendorf View additional photos of National Night Out on page 15.

The weather could not have been better this year for our August 5th National Night Out! Heavy

morning rain cleared out, and we enjoyed sunny skies and warm breezes. Six areas enjoyed a vari-

ety of activities, which included cookouts, a potluck dinner, a chef-catered feast, drinks and hors

d'oeuvres in the driveway, and live entertainment provided by Cooper Browning.

Officer McGruff, the crime dog, arrived in time to ride in Joe Haring's '57 T-bird and serve as our

bicycle and stroller parade marshal. The children were also led by four more vintage cars driven by

Bill Westendorf (1960 Volvo 445), Ray Daddio (1976 Porsche 911), Gary Brown (1960 TR3), and

John Hogan (1991 Mazda Miata). After the parade, the children visited with the police officers and

received NNO bracelets, police badges, finger lights, tattoos, activity books, and pictures with Of-

ficer McGruff and his police escorts.

What made this year so special was that we had a large number of brand-new residents, and

this was a fantastic opportunity for established neighbors to greet the newcomers and let them see

how friendly Baycliff is. My deep appreciation goes to all the block captains and residents who put

together activities for their neighbors to enjoy. Sincerest thanks to photographers Christine Westen-

dorf, Henry Thompson, Dove Payman, and Mary Daddio, whose great photos captured wonderful

memories of this fun evening. Here's hoping some more block activities will sprout up on their own

and that next year will be bigger and better than ever!

ABRC POOL AND SWIM TEAM NEWS

Steve Zahn, ABRC President

This summer we welcomed over sixty-two new member families to

our pool with an influx of families new to the neighborhood and a

number of empty nesters taking advantage of our significantly

reduced price “adult social membership.” Here are some of the highlights. If you are not a member,

we encourage you to contact us to learn why you should join.

Lap Swim: This year, we formalized the morning lap swim with a lifeguard and opened the pool at

6:00 a.m. three days a week for adults to come get their workout. It is a serene and beautiful place

to exercise, read the paper, and drink a cup of coffee.

Mighty Bolts: A major backbone of our pool is the summer swim league, a recreational league in

which anyone who can swim twenty-five meters unassisted can participate. While it is a summer

fun league and we have and welcome swimmers of all skill levels, we also have a large number of

swimmers who are standouts in the sport. Led by Coach Liz Stroud and her excellent staff, our

swimmers went 3 -1 on the season. The Bolts sent fifty-six swimmers to Divisionals to compete in

one hundred eight individual and fifteen relay events, and from there, thirty-six swimmers advanced

to the regional All Stars, participating in forty-three individual and ten relay events. Six of our swim-

mers placed in the top three in one or more All Stars events: Dara Duffy, Alex Lineberry, Ava

Hartman, Kayleigh Duffy, Annie Inghram, and Addison Cox; and five relay teams also placed.

Mighty Bolts swimmer Kayleigh Duffy set six new pool records, three of which were also Virginia

Beach Swim League records and two of which she did swimming up an age group. Records were

set in 8 and Under 50 Free, 25 Back, 25 Fly and 25 Breast, and in 10 and Under 50 Free and 25

Back. Nice work, Bolts!

Social Functions: We have held a number of social functions already this year and have more to

come into the fall and winter. Highlights included the School’s Out Party, July 4th Party (complete

Parties, Grill and Chills, the 1st Occasional Margarita Contest, biweekly Ladies’ Nights and Beer

Club for Men gatherings, the 1st Occasional Cornhole Tournament, the annual Old Timers’ Party,

and many other random and often impromptu gatherings around the grill or with the volleyball net.

By the time you read this, we will have closed out the year with a second Dive In Movie night and a

Labor Day party, and we will host an adult party with a band on September 13nd

. Don’t let fall lull

you into hibernation as we will wrap the pavilion, fire up the heaters, and continue to socialize on

occasion.

Retaining Wall: This fall’s project will be maintenance of the retaining wall built by legendary 95

pound football coach and former member Snag Nesbitt in the early 1970s. We will need a number

of strong backs for this one, so please give us a few hours of hard labor this fall.

Thanks to All Volunteers: Finally, dozens of members donated significantly of their time and

talents to make the pool work again this year. There are too many to thank by name, but please

know that we all appreciate everyone who pitches in an hour or two here or there to maintain and

improve this pool. We are fortunate to have so many willing volunteers.

VIRGINIA BEACH COUNCIL OF CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS REPORT John Hogan, Baycliff VBCCO Representative

The VBCCO is an umbrella organization uniting civic leagues and civic associa-

tions from neighborhoods city-wide. Its mission is to inform and empower citizens of

Virginia Beach and to assist civic groups in advocating for their community’s needs by

working with city government. VBCCO currently has representatives from nearly 100

civic leagues and associations, who together represent over 40,000 residents throughout Virginia

Beach. Meetings are open to the public and are held the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at

the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library auditorium at 4100 Virginia Beach Boulevard. Learn more at

www.vbcco.org

The VBCCO’s September meeting is unique. All Baycliff neighbors are invited to VBCCO’s PAR-

TY IN THE PARK ! This is a free picnic, and they have asked all individuals running for any office in

Virginia Beach to join us that evening, providing a great opportunity to meet them and ask them ques-

tions. Please join us on Thursday, September 18th, 6 p.m. until dusk at Mt. Trashmore Park in Shelters

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Sharon Haring, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator

If you notice suspicious activity, please call the police! For a crime in

progress or activities of concern, please call 911 immediately. Your

quick actions may save you or a neighbor from being victimized. If you

discover you are a victim of crime, but an immediate response is not indicated, please call the police as

soon as possible at 385-5000, Option #1. This is the Virginia Beach Emergency Communication Cen-

ter, and you will speak to a dispatcher. It is very important that you file the brief crime report, as this

allows the police to determine patterns of crime in our area, is the basis for additional patrol cars being

sent out to prevent future incidents, and is a requirement for property loss insurance claims.

Once you have spoken to the police, notify Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Sharon Haring at 481-

5508 or contact her at [email protected] so she can broadcast a Baycliffwatch message through-

out the neighborhood so residents can be proactive and prevent further incidents.

BAYCLIFF SADDENED BY THE DEATH

OF MERRYANA W. KARVALA

Merryana W. Karvala joined the love of her life in heaven on May 17, 2014. She was born the youngest of 5 children in Corpus Christi, Texas, on September 11, 1930, to the late Marvin and An-na Wesson. Merryana graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1948 and attended Del Mar Junior College. Merryana worked as a secretary and a realtor, but her greatest calling and vocation was that of a naval aviator's wife and mother of 4 children. She met and married her husband of fifty-six years, Captain Curt Karvala, in 1954 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Together they experienced eighteen moves in twenty-four years and many long deployments throughout Curt's naval career. Merryana was an active member and leader of Curt's various squadron and ship's wives' clubs. She was a member of Virginia Beach Community Chapel where fifteen years ago she began a Bible study called the Agape Group, which is still active and meeting today. Even though she con-sidered Virginia her home for the last forty-one years, Merryana was a true Texan at heart and loved her Dallas Cowboys! She enjoyed beautiful artwork, watercolor painting, reading, going to the beach, and feeding the birds in her backyard in Baycliff. She loved gardening and flower ar-ranging and was a member of the Alanton-Baycliff Garden Club. Merryana also served on the Young Life of Virginia Beach Committee for several years. Merryana was predeceased by her husband, Curt, and her four siblings: Alice Brown, Harold Wesson, Jimmie Wesson, and Marvin Wesson, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Leslie Boughton, daughter Susan Hill (Whit), son Chris Karvala (Kim) all of Virginia Beach and son David Karvala (Wendy) of Kitty Hawk, NC. She adored and doted on her twelve grandchildren: Marcia, Suzanne, Katie, Michael, Elizabeth, Leigh, Landon, Christian, Brynn, Blake, Taylor and Wes and eleven great-grandchildren: Quentin, Kelleigh, Kyla, Ashleigh, Tyler, Keara, Ayla, Matthew, Zane, Jett and Phoenix. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Gail Hallstrom and a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Beach Community Chapel, 1261 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 or Young Life of Virginia Beach at virginiabeach.younglife.org

WHEN A SOLICITOR COMES TO YOUR DOOR…BUYER BEWARE!

The City of Virginia Beach has a law to help protect homeowners when solicitors come to the door. Solicitors must obtain and carry with them a police department-issued non-laminated plastic card displaying their photo and the name of the company they represent. The most common door-to-door solicitors are security alarm companies, home repair, and magazine subscription sales. Most are legitimate companies and will have the proper solicitor permit displayed. Please do not invite solicitors into your home until you are convinced they have properly identified themselves. If the sales offer sounds too good to be true, trust your instincts; they are probably right. If you post a “no soliciting” sign, be sure to also include “VIOLATORS WILL BE CHARGED WITH TRESPASSING.” If an individual continues to solicit after seeing such a sign, he or she can be charged with trespassing, but the homeowner/resident would need to prosecute and appear in court. Some solicitors, such as charitable, non-profit organizations and civic or religious organiza-tions are exempt and do not require a solicitor’s permit. However, those individuals are required to register with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs (VDACA). Such organi-zations can be verified online at www.vdacs.virginia.gov or by phone during business hours with the VDACA at (804) 786-2042. Report all suspicious individuals to the Police non-emergency number 385-5000.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS NOTES

POWER OUTAGE AT ENTRYWAY John Mark Serré , Safety and Improvements Chairman

Did you notice the traffic circle and entry sign lights were out during the month of June? Perhaps you noticed that the entry and traffic circle flower beds planted by the garden club and civic league and the grass were not as vibrant as they usually are due a lack of water. The cause of these circumstances was a downed overhead power line run-ning over Mill Dam Road to our utility pole. During the latter half of May, we presume a vehicle (such as a piece of construction equip-ment on a trailer) knocked down the line feeding our entry way, destroying the weather-head, con-duit and damaging the meter base. After receiving estimates from three electricians, the Baycliff Civic League Executive Board, with the assistance of resident electrical expert and retired electri-cian Bob Simmons, selected a contractor to make the required repairs. Once a permit was issued by the city to complete the work, the electrician promptly made the repairs and the City of Virginia Beach inspector approved the work. Then, shortly after that, Dominion Power reconnected the service to our weather head, and power was restored to the circle lighting,

AN OPEN LETTER TO MY BAYCLIFF NEIGHBORS

After about 40 years, I am saying farewell to my beloved

Baycliff. I have such great memories of developing this beautiful location on the high ground of Broad Bay in the Great Neck area and residing in our

wonderful neighborhood that stretches from its unique circular entrance to the 200+ acres that extend to the cliffs of the bay.

I often sit in my “Larry’s Man Cave,” named by my late wife Rachel, who by the

way also had a say in the naming of Baycliff (we met in Bayville in Long Island, N.Y). I believe Baycliff offers the greatest view in the Hampton Roads area overlooking

Broad Bay. It’s only about a mile and half from Bay Island and Sea Shore State Park and affords me privacy with a view of the nautical activity on the bay.

As an 83-year-old widower, it’s time for me to move on to the Atlantic Shores

Retirement Community, which offers independent living and assisted living as well as

a nursing home facility. Looking back, I would have enjoyed placing sidewalks throughout our neighborhood, but on second thought, I have always been proud to

drive home every day appreciating the presence of our larger lots for the 278 families who live here.

One of my dreams was to have one of my five Sancilio children move into my

home, but that will not happen at this time. So I am selling my castle and listing it with my granddaughter Christiania Grace Sancilio. I pray that the new owner will

have the peace, happiness, and joy that I have known in beautiful Baycliff.

As tears come to my eyes, I say goodbye for now.

BOYS RAISE AWARENESS AND MONEY FOR FANCONI ANEMIA AT BAYCLIFF YARD SALE

Saturday, May 10th, was Baycliff’s Community Yard Sale, and Kelly

Seith and Janie Cecelic graciously agreed to hand out the shopper’s yard

sale maps at the Baycliff front entry. In conjunction with this, Kelly’s son

Logan (7) and friends Wyatt Klimkiewicz (10) and Tyson Principe (7) had

a refreshment stand selling lemonade, cookies, donuts and cake pops to

raise funds for the Fanconi Anemia, a disease that Wyatt has. Thanks to

Jessie Cecelic for her delicious baking! The boys had a very successful

fundraiser and raised over $300! Baycliff is very proud of their efforts!

What is Fanconi Anemia? (Information is taken from the Fanconi

Anemia Research website.) Fanconi Anemia (FA) is a very rare, complex, inherited blood disease that can

lead to bone marrow failure and cancer. In all of the United States, about 31 babies with FA are born annual-

ly. The majority of individuals affected by FA develop bone marrow failure, necessitating a stem cell trans-

plant. Wyatt Klimkiewicz had a successful bone marrow transplant from his younger brother Owen in 2007.

Many patients develop Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) or Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). Pa-

tients who live into adulthood are also highly likely to develop head and neck, gynecologic, and/or gastroin-

testinal cancer at a much earlier age (20s, 30s, and 40s) than the general population. Patients who have had

a successful stem cell transplant and are thereby cured of the blood problems associated with FA must have

regular examinations to watch for signs of cancer. Currently, 80% of individuals with Fanconi Anemia reach

age 18, and some adults reach their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. The Fanconi Anemia Research Fund is working in-

credibly hard to extend lives and has made major discoveries in the areas of successful stem cell transplants

and gene science and are investigating new treatments, including gene therapy. Because this is a rare disor-

der, most fundraising is grass roots and done by individuals and families affected by this disorder. Let’s work

with them toward a more hopeful future! You can send donations to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund,

1801 Willamette Street, Suite 200, Eugene, Oregon 97401 or make a donation online at www.fanconi.org

Learn more about the Sandman Triathlon fundraisers on behalf of Wyatt and support his team at this year’s

Sandman Triathlon on September 21st, 2014!

Reprinted from THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT, September 26, 2012 by By David Macaulay, Correspondent

2012 Triathlon Competitors Raise $46,000 in 8 Year Old's Name

In a tough economy it's hard to raise money for charity. It's even harder when you are raising money for

a child with a disease few people have ever heard of. But for Jen and Steve Klimkiewicz, the message about

their son Wyatt's rare genetic disorder, Fanconi Anemia, is spreading in Virginia Beach. At the Sandman Tri-

athlon on the Boardwalk, runners and supporters wearing distinctive blue shirts bearing the words "One for

Wyatt" were out in force at the finish line on Sept. 16. A team of 15 racers and others helped raise about

$46,000 for research into Fanconi anemia. It was the largest amount since they started racing for Wyatt

about five years ago at the grueling triathlon that attracts about 700 people every year.

Jen Klimkiewicz said the genetic disease her 8-year-old son suffers from is very rare. The chances of

getting it are about one in 350,000. "A lot of them get bone marrow failure. A lot of them get cancer," she

said. "The problem with this disease is that when they get cancer, it's much more challenging to treat them

than it would be a typical person with cancer."

Wyatt was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia at age 3. He received a bone marrow transplant in October

2007 from his younger brother, Owen, who does not have the disease. Steve Klimkiewicz was scheduled to

race in the annual Sandman Triathlon that year, but he cancelled due to his son's treatment. He was back on

the Boardwalk in 2008, when he decided to raise money for Wyatt. About $10,000 was raised in 2008. A

team has been running for Wyatt every year since. All proceeds go to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund in

Oregon, which carries out research into a disease that many young people don't survive past their 20s.

Jen Klimkiewicz said those with the disease are "several hundred times more likely to get cancer than an

average person." Their average life expectancy is 22 years. "He's a really happy child, so he makes it easier

than it should be," she said about Wyatt. "We have a great support system with our friends and family." But

Wyatt's mom admits it's a hard time to ask people for money.

GOLFER’S SUCCESS IS CHILD’S PLAY

Baycliff’s Ben Kablach’s drive to excel at golf doesn’t

sound extraordinary, until one considers he’s 7 years old

and really good. He just placed third for boys his age at the

15th U.S. Kids World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C.

(Note: Out of over 100 of the best youth golfers for his age

in the world, Ben came in third place, making him the best

7-year-old player in the United States. Only two child prod-

igies from Thailand had better scores for his age group.)

This competition, billed as the world’s largest event for

kids 12 and under, attracts top golfers from around the

globe. After three rounds of nine-hole golf against 100

boys his age, Ben finished only six strokes behind the lead-

er, scoring 38 in each round.

Many of these kids focus solely on golf. They practice

five times per week, have personal trainers and even nutri-

tionists, said Michelle Holmes, who runs the Michelle

Holmes School of Golf at Cahoon Plantation Golf Club in Chesapeake. Holmes also oversees two

tours: U.S. Kids Golf of Hampton Roads and the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Golf Club.

For Ben to finish third in such competition, Holmes said, “It’s just natural ability you just have to

be born with.” Especially considering Ben hadn’t even touched his clubs this season until July.

Before, he was focused on baseball, where he led his youth league in home runs. “I don’t like to

run, so if I hit a home run, I don’t have to run fast,” Ben said.

Holmes said the same muscles in the hips and legs used to belt homers over an outfield fence

are what power golf balls down fairways. “It’s really from the core of the body,” she said.

All Ben knows is his long-game strategy works. He sizes up each hole’s yardage and knows

where to drive. “I always like the Par 5,” Ben said. “That’s very advantageous because most of the

kids can’t hit it as far as me.”

At Pinehurst, for instance, during his first round, Ben birdied on a Par 4, 195-yard hole. This

from a kid who turns 8 in November.

“When you see him out on the golf course, you have no idea if he’s having a great day or not,”

Holmes said. “His mental attitude is that focused.”

Ben maintains the same focus putting around the yard or family room. He’s even mastered a

hard-to-contemplate game he invented that involves chipping golf balls off the family room’s walls

into a practice green – the sort one would imagine sitting behind a CEO’s desk. With an aplomb

belying his age, Ben taps balls into the air, after adjusting for air conditioning flow and carpet plush-

ness, so they bounce off a far wall with just enough oomph to roll back into the hole.

His dad John Kablach and mom Ruth Ciavarra just shake their heads, conceding they’d never

land such a shot.

So, now having been to Pinehurst, when asked where else he’d like to play, Ben mentioned

maybe courses in China or Mexico, owing to his fondness for their food. Augusta National in

Georgia would be cool, too. And the next competition? Ben shrugged. “Golf is just a game I want to

play,” he said. “It’s just fun going out and breathing fresh air instead of staying home all day.”

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS NOTES

Baycliff’s Ben Kablach, 7, considers his ability to drive golf balls down fairways farther than most kids his age as a key to his success.

SAVE BAYCLIFF’S 2014 LUMINARY LIGHTING!

CHAIRMAN NEEDED TO CONTINUE BAYCLIFF’S PARTICIPATION

Eleven years ago, Baycliff started its beautiful custom of lighting luminaries at our entry and along neighborhood streets in December. We participate in the city-wide luminary celebra-tion, which is Saturday, December 13th this year. Every year, more Baycliff families set out bags and candles, and this has become a favorite Baycliff tradition.

Debbie Stephens, our previous chairman, has stepped down due to a recent move to the oceanfront. We sincerely thank her for years of generous service! In order to continue this heart-warming holiday event, we need a new chairman to organize our luminary lighting.

The Luminary Chairman oversees the purchase and distribution of white luminary bags to all households in late November. S(he) will be needing volunteers to assist with putting together sets of luminary bags, de-livering the kits to residents, and also decorating Baycliff’s entry that night with candle-lit bags. The evening of December 13th, residents set up their sand and votive candle filled bags along their streets and light the candles at sundown. It’ s an awesome and breathtakingly beautiful sight, enjoyed by both strolling families and slowly cruising cars that evening. If you are interested in chairing Baycliff’s Luminary Lighting or wish to help, please email Christine Westendorf at [email protected]
