For her ISP in CGR4M - Grade 12 Resource Management, Grade 11 student Viviannedecided to tackle the fact that we don't recycle here at Blyth Academy Whitby.

She researched how our building manages waste, and chose to take action, implementinga new program for the campus to recycle paper, plastics, and bottles/cans, as well asgreen waste. Vivianne takes all of this home with her and disposes of it through curbsiderecycling.

It has only been a week since we started this new initiative, and Vivianne reports that weare learning quickly - each day she is pulling less recycling out of the garbage cans.

This is a perfect example of a student using her academic learning to identify a problem, and to come up with a solution to make the world a better place - thank you to Vivianne formaking Blyth Academy Whitby a greener school!

WELCOME BACK, MR. HANCOCK!WELCOME BACK, MR. HANCOCK!For the duration of Term 3, we shared Blyth Academy Whitby teacher Mr. Ryan Hancockwith Blyth's Global High School (GHS) program. Mr. Hancock accompanied a numberof students to Australia and New Zealand in early February, and returned to us for thestart of Term 4. Read on for a summary written by Mr. Hancock about his time withGHS:

I had a great time in Australia and New Zealand! And I somehow survived! I am no longer afraid of flying, that's for sure. Multiple 16 hour flights will do that to you. I am stillvery afraid of jellyfish. Having a deadly one a few inches from your face will do that to you. Andwow, koala bears smell really bad. By far the highlight was going to Middle Earth and seeing where the Lord of the Rings movies werefilmed. Despite my students never seeing any of the movies, it was a fun day for me to nerd out."Is this the movie with the creepy little aliens Mr. Hancock?" No, no it is not. It's definitely a whole new world teaching for Global High School. Having class in my bedroom, atthe park, by the pool, it really forces you out of your comfort zone. Although I will miss cuddling withkangaroos and swimming in ridiculous wetsuits, I am very happy to be home for Term 4 in Whitby.

As part of their Term 3 math courses, Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) and Grade 12 AdvancedFunctions (MHF4U), Ms. Sam Hnidec and Ms. Stephanie Little assigned their students to createimages out of mathematical functions.

The assignment tasked students with the following: select an image (either trace an image theyfound or freehand draw their own), and then create an outline of the image using functions learnedin the course.

Students were marked based on their ability to: - use transformations of functions to create recognizable image (traced or free-hand);- use a variety of functions learned in our course;- use of creative elements (taking creative liberties with image they traced, solid versus dottedlines, purposeful choice of colour, shading).

Ms. Hnidec and Ms. Little were so proud of their students' hard work, that they wanted to share these projects with the whole Blyth Whitby community.

SU PERSTAR STU DENTS - APRIL EDITIONSU PERSTAR STU DENTS - APRIL EDITION

As this edition comes at the end of Term 3, each teacher has identified a student (orstudents) they feel deserves recognition. We hope you enjoy this week's expandedSuperstar Student section!

WILLEM S. (Gr.8)Nominated by teachers Ms. Meghan Armstrong and Mrs. Chantelle Judge

Willem is like an island of calm in a sometimes wavy ocean. He comes to class ready to learn; he is always on task and encourages the same in others; he works thoughtfully and quietly; he follows direction well and he always shows respect for his peers and teachers. He takes ownership of his education and asks questions when he needs to. Willem displays a maturity beyond his years - always a welcome quality, especially in Middle School!

RAMMENA R. (Gr.9)Nominated by teacher Mr. Blair Reid in SNC1D

It isn't easy being the only female student in a class of boys - especially in Grade 9; however, Rammena never lets the boisterous activity or sounds and smells get her down. Rammena consistently produced extremely high level work in science. Her projects were well researched and presented, her class

notes were thorough and well-organized, and her participation in class wasstrong. Congratulations Rammena!

AIDAN G. (Gr.10)Nominated by teacher Mme Peggy Klem in FSF2D

Aidan brought his best self to French class every day. He is a very bright and very capable young man who works hard and prioritizes his academics. Even when he is uncertain, Aidan is always willing to give something a try. Aidan has an important reason for learning French - his future career in the Canadian military!

FARIS I. (Gr.10)Nominated by teacher Mme Peggy Klem in FSF2D

Faris demonstrates a maturity in the classroom, and was a natural leader in this year's 9/10 French class. He consistently earned among the highest marks on his assignments and tests, and always challenged himself to do as well as he could. Faris demonstrated a strong knowledge base, as well as an admirable work ethic in French this term. Thank you for all of your hard work, Faris.

LIZZIE B. (Gr.11)Nominated by teachers Miss Laura Sherman in CHW3M and Ms. Meghan Hagedorn in HSB4U

Lizzie has been nominated by two different teachers this term, which is an accomplishment itself! Lizzie challenged herself with her first Grade 12 course in HSB4U - 12 Challenge & Change, and Ms. Hagedorn commented that she was an important contributor to class discussions. In CHW3M - 11 World History, Lizzie set herself a high academic goal, and through a lot of hard work on her part, reached it in the end. Hard work does pay off!

BRITNEY G. (Gr.11)Nominated by teacher Ms Joelle delaPaz in SBI3U

Britney was nervous about taking 11 Biology at the start of the term, but very quickly her innate curiosity got the better of her, and she found herself enjoying the course far more than she originally thought she would. Her enthusiasm for the subject was infectious, and her inquisitive nature led her to continually ask questions on her search for more and more information and knowledge. Congratulations on your success this term, Britney!

SHEFALI K. (Gr.11)Nominated by teacher Ms Sam Hnidec in MCR3U

Shefali is receiving this honour due to her consistent hard work, and the initiative she showed in 11 Functions this term. She was the first winner of Ms. Hnidec's Bullseye event; her ISP demonstrated an exceptional amount of creativity and additional work; and she achieved the top mark overall in the class. Thanks for sharing your talents with us, and inspiring the rest of the class with your effort and attitude, Shefali!

CHARLIE S. (Gr.11)Nominated by teacher Mme Peggy Klem in FSF2D

After taking French in Grade 9, Charlie knew he wanted to continue in the subject throughout high school. Unfortunately we weren't able to offer it when he was in Grade 10, so he had to wait until this year to earn his 10 French credit. Charlie was the strongest student in his class, both in terms of ability and effort, and is so keen that he is continuing in Grade 11 French in Term 4, taking advantage of Blyth Academy Online's programming. Bravo, Charlie!

MICHAELA B. (Gr.12)Nominated by teacher Ms Joelle delaPaz in SBI3U

Partway through the first class of the term, Michaela excused herself and headed to the Guidance office to drop the course. We are glad she decided not to. Michaela went on to be one of the strongest students in the course, and supported her peers as well. She finished at the top of her class. Not only did Michaela learn about 11 Biology this term, she also learned the confidence that comes from

facing your fears. Great work, Michaela!

AAMINAH B. (Gr.12)Nominated by teacher Ms. Kim Kupovics in HHS4U

Despite missing time for health-related absences, Aaminah was a vital contributor to the HHS4U - 12 Families in Canada course. She was always willing to share her thoughts in class discussions, and her comments were always mature, thoughtful, and moved the conversation forward. Aaminah's final exam was nearly perfect, demonstrating outstanding knowledge and creative and insightful ideas. Congratulations on your success in this course, Aaminah!

NOOR P. (Gr.12)Nominated by teacher Ms. Stephanie Little in SCH4U and MHF4U

Having both of her classes with the same teacher this term was greatly beneficial to Noor - she always knew where her teacher could be found, and never hesitated to ask her for help. As a result, Noor was very successful in both her 12 Chemistry and 12 Advanced Functions courses. Ms. Little was particularly proud of Noor's hard work and consistent effort, as well as her perfect attendance in class and regular participation in study hall.

HANA P. (Gr.12)Nominated by teacher Mr. Blair Reid in PSK4U

Hana demonstrated both a keen interest and a strong ability in the PSK4U - 12 Kinesiology course. She was very well organized, clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, and helped to support her peers in the class as well. Her athletic background clearly helped her to excel in the subject. Her success in this course will serve Hana well when she majors in kinesiology at university next year.

TAYLOR R. (Gr.12)Nominated by teacher Ms Natalie Garcia in PLF4M

Taylor is a natural born leader. She was a superstar in the PLF4M - Grade 12 Recreation & Healthy Active Living Leadership class. She made meaningful contributions to conversations, always had her work completed in time and with maximum effort, and assisted her classmates whenever she could.
