Ministry growth accelerates following CHM segment on Fox News’ “Huckabee”Christian Healthcare Ministries experienced a spike in requests for information after the ministry was featured on the Fox News Channel show “Huckabee.” Former Arkansas governor and potential presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is the show’s host.

The segment with the Rev. Howard Russell, CHM executive director, and CHM members Jason and Tori Benham of Concord, N.C., aired April 9 and 10.

CHM received more than 11,000 requests for information, 1,100 newsletter requests and hundreds of questions on its website, www.chministries.org, in the two weeks following the show’s air dates.

The ministry staff also processed more than 1,000 new membership applications.

CHM cancels Guideline regarding 45-day wait

Potential presidential candidate Mike Huckabee with Rev. Howard Russell, CHM executive director

Until recently, new Christian Healthcare Ministries members had to wait 45 days after joining to submit medical bills to the ministry.

As of May 1, 2011, that Guideline is no longer in effect.

Previously, only bills for emergencies were eligible for sharing within the first 45 days. Now, bills for all other

illnesses and conditions—eligible according to the Guidelines—will be presented for sharing among CHM members.

This change will not affect members who have been ministry participants for more than 45 days. It will, however, affect your friends and family members who are considering joining CHM. They can do so with the peace of mind that

they will have immediate provision for their health care costs.

Why make this change? The CHM Board of Trustees voted to cancel the waiting period for two reasons:

1) The Board determined that the 45-day waiting period didn’t have a significant effect on the authorization of

“Huckabee” and Janet Parshall’s radio show: spreading the word about CHMEditor’s note: If you missed the Fox News “Huckabee” show that featured Christian Healthcare Ministries, you can view it by visiting www.chministries.org/news.aspx

When I and two Christian Healthcare Ministries’ members sat down to be interviewed by former Gov. Mike Huckabee on his weekend Fox News show “Huckabee,” I hoped to accomplish two things: first, to glorify God; second, to declare the good news that Christians are caring for each other by sharing in paying each other’s medical bills.

Joining me to talk with Gov. Huckabee were CHM husband and wife members Jason and Tori Benham. Jason and his brother, David, are identical twins and former professional baseball players.

The brothers today are young Christian entrepreneurs who have built a thriving business. The Benham Real Estate Group is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Benham REO Group was named by Franchise Magazine as the 11th fastest growing private real estate company in America.

Jason, David and their families were—as many people are—slammed by ever-increasing health insurance premiums. They decided to leave insurance behind and become CHM members.

It was a very good thing.

After joining CHM, Jason and his wife, Tori, had some $70,000 in medical bills in 2010. They trusted God and put their faith in the faithfulness of CHM members to voluntarily share their needs.

The “Huckabee” show with us as guests aired on April 9 and 10. Within days of our appearance, I was contacted by Janet Parshall, a Christian talk radio host whose program is heard on more than 100 stations.

On Wednesday, April 20, she and I talked on the air for nearly 30 minutes about CHM and how Christians through their membership are demonstrating love for each other as they see to their own health care cost needs.

These were extraordinary opportunities to present our New Testament model of the Body of Christ caring for its members, and we are grateful to God for each one.

The results have been, well, phenomenal. In the weeks following the “Huckabee” and Janet Parshall show appearances, we’ve added hundreds of new members. We’ve also received more than 11,000 requests for information about the ministry.

Each contact is being answered carefully. It is imperative that prospective members understand that we are not an insurance company. There are no contracts. There is no risk assignment. We

don’t set our monthly financial gifts based on age, health status, or any other factor. Those were points I stressed on “Huckabee.”

This ministry is an exercise of faith. Faith in God. Faith in each other. Faith that the 2,000-year-old Christian model is superior to anything that mankind can create or devise.

I’m grateful to be a part of it, both as an employee and as a CHM member. I hope you’re pleased as well.

Thank you from the bottom of every CHM employee’s heart for your membership in this ministry. We are here to serve Him—and you—in every way we can for His glory and for your benefit.

CHM member’s book encourages Christians to say, “Use Me, Lord”

Christian Healthcare Ministries member Helena Ohmen of White Pine, Tenn., encourages Christians to say, “Use me, Lord.” The author of Use Me, Lord: Incredible Miracles Happen for Those Who Believe, Helena writes that extraordinary events unfold when believers surrender themselves to God’s will.

Use Me, Lord is a collection of short, easy-to-read true stories from Helena’s life, including her family’s obedience to God’s direction to move away from family and friends in New Jersey to begin a new life in Tennessee. Each of the 25 chapters highlights miraculous

events in which God was faithful to answer prayer requests made in the name of Jesus Christ.

“I wrote Use Me, Lord to encourage and strengthen Christians as they wait on the Lord to provide for their needs,” Helena said. “Witnessing God’s answers to prayer helps us draw closer to Him.”

Helena said that at first she resisted God’s call to write the book, claiming that she was too busy. After she lost her job, she heard God say, “Now, write the book.” Helena obeyed and the book was published

The heart: seat of the intellect

Healthwatch - promoting biblical health and wellness by Dr. Michael Jacobson, D.O.

© Dr. Michael D. Jacobson. This article may not be reproduced without permission.

This article is excerpted from Dr. Jacobson’s book, The Word On Health, originally published by Moody Press and available by contacting the Ministry Information department at 1-800-791-6225 or [email protected].

The first two biblical mentions of the word “heart” occur in Genesis 6:5 and 8:21:

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was deeply troubled.

And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in His heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. In his book How to Worship Jesus Christ, Joseph Carroll states that these Scriptures indicate that the heart has several key functions:

• It is the seat of our intellect.• It is the seat of our emotions.• It is the seat of our will. In addition, I believe that these passages also indicate the following:

• The heart is the seat of our motives.

As human beings, we are spirit, soul and body. Our spirit enables us to communicate with our heavenly Father. Our soul—including our mind, will and emotions—is what gives us our unique personality that allows us to interact with one another. Our physical body houses our spirit and soul.

We all have experienced situations in which something we have heard or seen troubled our spirit or soul. Often these occurrences cause a physical effect on our hearts. I’m certain you can recall a time when you heard some bad news and your heart “sank.”

Scripture indicates that the heart is a major point of interaction with the spirit:

• Deuteronomy 2:30 ...for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand.

• Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

• Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

• Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter…

• 2 Corinthians 3:3 For as

much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

• Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

These passages illustrate that the heart has intentions (motives) that can be pure, sincere, centered on others, and Christ-like. Conversely, they can be self-centered or bent toward evil or harm. My personal belief is that our hearts will either be led by the Spirit toward that which is good and positive, or we will allow them to be led by our carnal nature (what Scripture refers to as our flesh) into destructive behavior.

Kim Cornett London, Ky. • Total need: $14,226 • Prayer Page gifts received to date: $1,845 • Need remaining: $12,381

Our family has been Christian Healthcare Ministries members since February 2010. My husband, Cam, and I attended the same high school and became Christians before we graduated. We were married six years later and we now have two children, Ashley and Jarrett.

I had always struggled with my weight, but wanted to be more active and better able to care for my family. After many years and many failed attempts at losing weight, I followed my doctor’s advice and underwent gastric bypass surgery. It was a great success: I lost 155 pounds! I have been able to keep off most of the weight.

After the surgery I did many things with my family again: camping, fishing, coaching soccer and softball and participating in church events. I was able to enjoy life again and things went well for nearly six years.

In November 2009 I experienced stricture—shrinkage of scar tissue. My doctor discovered that I had developed scar tissue in my abdominal lower bowel.

On Dec. 18, 2009, I had laparoscopic surgery to remove the adhesions. Two weeks later I returned to the hospital to have more scar tissue removed and to undergo reconstruction of my small intestine. My recovery from the surgeries was slow but successful.

In April 2010 I developed an incisional hernia from my previous surgeries and due to giving birth to Jarrett by C-section. I had surgery again on May 5 to undergo hernia repair; it took the rest of the year to recover from the operation.

Before the final surgery I had

What is the Prayer Page? The Prayer Page is an additional means by which CHM members help other Christians.

Most of the medical needs listed on these pages are ongoing bills from pre-existing conditions, which do not qualify for sharing under Christian Healthcare Ministries Guidelines. (They are not bills incurred before members joined CHM.)

Giving to needs listed on these pages is not your CHM monthly gift. It is an opportunity to give over and above your gift amount. We urge you to send cards of encouragement even if you are unable to contribute financially.

See the sidebars on pages 8-10 for more information on how to give.

How do I use the Giving

Guide?

In the Giving Guide, find the range of membership numbers in which your number falls. You can send a gift to the need number that corresponds to your member number.

For example, if your number is 110000, you would send to need #24.

These directions are only suggestions; if you are not a CHM member or feel led by the Lord to give to a need other than the one suggested, please do so!

How do I send my gift? (Continued from the page 8 sidebar)

Option 2: You can send financial gifts to the CHM office and they will be forwarded to the recipient you choose. The advantage is that gifts sent in this manner are tax deductible.

Please make your check out to CHM and write “Prayer Page” and the name of the gift recipient in the memo line. We will deposit your check and generate another check to send to the recipient of your choice. We will forward any card or encouraging note that you include, or you can send it directly to the recipient.

Huckabee (continued from page 1)

“We saw steady and significant growth before the Huckabee segment aired, but this is in another category altogether,” said Russell. He added that this year’s growth rate already looks to surpass the significant growth seen from 2009 to 2010.

“It’s nothing short of God’s hand moving; that’s the only way it can be explained,” Russell said. “We are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Huckabee asked Russell questions about

how the ministry works and its ability to serve as something different from health insurance.

The Benhams shared the story of their infant daughter, Lundi, who suffered from pertussis (whooping cough). The family incurred tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills in the past year, all of which were shared by CHM members.

“People who contacted us after watching the Huckabee show presented us with excellent questions,” Russell said. “Our conversations with them have reinforced the fact that there are many Christians out there looking for a better solution—God’s solution—to rising health care costs. They’re exactly the people we’re here

to serve.”

Editor’s note: To view the Huckabee show segment on Christian Healthcare Ministries, visit www.chministries.org/news.aspx. To read more about the Benham family, see the CHM January 2010 newsletter at www.chministries.org/newsletters.aspx/CHMJanuary2010.pdf.

medical bills for pre-existing conditions. In other words, the waiting period was irrelevant because the CHM Needs Processing department always uses patients’ medical records to determine whether a condition is pre-existing.

2) CHM is a ministry committed to following God’s leading and moving forward with integrity. At the same time, the ministry employs sound business

practices. The Board decided that waiving the waiting period will assist in growing the ministry and will help more Christians without undermining the ministry’s financial sustainability.

“As a ministry, we seek ways to do more for the people we serve,” said the Rev. Howard Russell, CHM executive director. “We are not an insurance company focused on meeting its bottom line. Our passion is

to make certain that the nature of God is reflected in CHM operations.”

Russell said there is a third reason the ministry removed its 45-day wait Guideline. “I am confident that with every such improvement to our ministry, the world will more clearly know that we are disciples of Christ. We accomplish this mission by fulfilling His instruction to love one another.”

I thank God for my recovery and also thank CHM members for their prayers, cards of encouragement and financial donations. When our family joined the ministry, we had no idea of the positive impact it would

have on our lives and the lives of other believers. We want to remain members for many years to come and are thankful that such a ministry exists to serve Christians.

More teens lose hearing early in life

According to a study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, more teenagers are losing their hearing.

Between 2005 and 2006, standard hearing test results and questionnaires were completed by 1,700 teenagers. Researchers compared the results to similar data collected on nearly 3,000 teens from 1988 to 1994.

Since public awareness of the detrimental effects of loud noise on hearing increased in recent years, researchers wanted to understand if this knowledge would show improvement in teens’ hearing tests compared to results from the previous decade.

The scientists were surprised to find that in nearly every category, hearing in adolescents was worse than in the previous study. The prevalence of hearing loss—defined as at least 15 decibels (dB) loss in any single frequency tested—rose by nearly one-third in all ages.

In addition, significant hearing loss of at least 25 dB rose from 3.5 percent to 5.3 percent. These losses were observed in the high frequency range, which is characteristic of noise-induced hearing loss.

A loss of 15 dB of hearing means that, at a given frequency (which corresponds to pitch), individuals needed an increased volume of 15 decibels to hear the tone. The study authors could not identify any underlying causal factors to explain the worsening trend.

As a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, I work in an occupational environment that is characterized by very loud noise. Hearing tests are required on all aircrew members or individuals who work around aircraft

and other noise generators.

Part of my job is to review these tests. Although there are numerous workers with apparent noise-induced hearing loss, it’s also true that many aircrew members—who have spent their entire careers flying or working around or on jet aircraft—have perfect hearing. The difference is that the latter group safeguards their hearing by consistently using adequate ear protection gear.

Next time you see your child listening to an iPod, ask if you can put an ear bud in your ear to check the volume. Tell your teenager about this research study. Explain that hearing isn’t something your child can get back once it has been lost.

She has served as a registered nurse for more than 30 years and said that over the years she met many people in need of healing and answers about the meaning of life. “I am a work in progress, but by the grace of God I will remain steadfast to His calling in my life to reach the lost and proclaim the truth,” she said.

Educational DVDs don’t help toddlers learn words

If you have young children or grandchildren, you may want to think twice before spending money on educational DVDs designed to teach toddlers vocabulary and other language skills..Researchers at the University of Virginia showed infants 12- to- 18 months old a popular and highly-rated educational DVD several times a week for four weeks. The video was designed to teach vocabulary words to toddlers. A control group of children did not view the video, but researchers monitored their language development.

Children who viewed the video did not add any more words to their vocabulary than the control group who did not view the video. The highest degree of learning took place in children whose parents taught the same words to their children during

everyday activities without using the video.

The researchers concluded that the amount of learning children gain from watching the DVD is negligible. They concluded that it is extremely important that learning takes place within the

context of a social environment—in other words, through relationships. Most children under age three do not appear to relate what they see on the screen to reality in the physical

world.

Heart (continued from page 4)

CHM executive director Rev. Howard Russell and member Sam Davis pose at the International Holiness Convention held April 26-28 in Dayton, Ohio. Candid corner

The Bible also makes it clear that our hearts have thoughts. In other words, our hearts have an intellect. This knowledge has been a puzzle to me over the years because, as a scientist, I believed that the mind does all of the thinking and that the heart merely serves as a pump for blood.

However, examples throughout Scripture indicate that the heart does think. Today, scientists are beginning to recognize that

the heart (at least the spiritual “heart”) does indeed have a significant intellectual function.

“The heart is a highly intelligent system that plays a far more central role in perception, mental/emotional balance and stress than previously believed. When people self-generate feelings of sincere love, care or appreciation, a corresponding coherence pattern appears in the frequency

spectrum of their ECG (electrocardiogram). It is as though the heart, brain, and rest of the body were designed to function best when we experience positive emotional states.”

Letters to Christian Healthcare Ministries

We’d love to hear from you!Send us your letters:Christian Healthcare MinistriesAttn: Editor127 Hazelwood Ave.Barberton, OH 44203

[email protected]

Editor’s note: Letters sent to CHM and printed on this page may be edited for length or grammar.

Just as the church of Christ is not a building, Christian Healthcare Ministries is not an office in Ohio.

These letters represent what you who participate in CHM are accomplishing for each other and for the cause of Christ.

You, through your collective and faith-based sharing and support, make this ministry possible. We are privileged to serve you. We are privileged to serve Him.

Dear Prayer Page staff:

I can’t express how grateful I am to Christian Healthcare Ministries. The Prayer Page has been a wonderful vehicle through which God has provided for me and blessed me. I give the Lord all of the glory!

Thank you very much for your help. May God bless you abundantly.

In Christ,

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

Thank you so much for helping me with my remaining medical bills. I wish I could send more to help others, but I will do what I can.

All of my health care providers have been paid now thanks to you!

Sincerely,

Tom NewellEnnis, TX

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

I praise God for your ministry to His children. The CHM Needs Processing department staff members were so patient and helpful whenever I called the ministry. It

is such a relief to know that my medical needs have been met and a huge burden has been lifted. Praise the Lord!

Sincerely,

Geraldine SwansonLee’s Summit, MO

Dear CHM members:

My medical need has been listed on the Prayer Page for a few months. I want to tell everyone who prayed for me or sent me a monetary gift how much it has blessed and helped me. I truly feel honored and humbled to be the recipient of your care and concern.

Thank you so much,

Joanne RobertsKalispell, MT

Dear fellow CHM members:

Two years ago Dan lost his carpentry job of 20 years and we also lost our health insurance. Dan is a self-employed carpenter now. We’ve seen some lean times, but in His divine mercy, God continues to bless us.

Three of our family members have incurred large medical bills in the past year. However, thanks to the CHM staff and wonderful people like you, the burden has been light enough to bear.

In the love of Christ,

Dan & Betty ThoennesEudora, KS

Dear Christian Healthcare Ministries:

I just want to say how much this ministry has blessed and helped me since I joined in 2005. The financial help has been tremendous and proves that we can’t “out-give” God.

I believe that when you give to help others, God will continue to bless you. That is what this ministry is about and is what it has done for me. Health insurance doesn’t come close to CHM and the knowledge that people of the same faith are praying for you.

I still have a long way to go to regain my health—and I pray that I do—but whatever the circumstance I know I can count on CHM to help.

I’m enclosing a financial gift for Prayer Page needs. I may be in their shoes one day.

Thank you again for your ministry and for your prayers and support. May God continue to bless His work.

Sincerely,

Pamala HarbisonEl Paso, TX
