A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Dear Friends, On January 22nd we will mark the 47th anniversary of the landmark United States Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, which limited government restrictions on abortions and for all intents and purposes opened the door for the legal procurement of abortions in this country. Since that time, millions of unborn children have had their lives ended through abortive measures. Because the Church rightly teaches that abortion is the taking of an innocent life, it has become one of the greatest of moral crises that the Catholic Church confronts. I am very grateful that our shared Respect Life Ministry with St. Thomas of Villanova Parish works so hard to keep this issue forefront in our minds so that we can work and pray for a just resolution to this daily slaughter of the innocents. The display of crosses in front of the church on Benton Street is a sad reminder that each hour of each day 136 babies die from abortion. While they may be difficult to look at, the crosses serve as a reminder that much needs to be done to end the legalization of abortion in this state and country. I encourage everyone, to pray, work and vote in support of life. Perhaps one day this terrible scourge will no longer visit this great country we call home. For those who have had an abortion, healing can take place through a ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago called “Project Rachel.” The following information comes from the Archdiocesan website: Project Rachel is a sensitive, private, free and confidential experience with a network of specially trained priests and caring people who understand the painful road back from abortion. It is open to Catholics and those of other faiths. Project Rachel Ministry begins with a phone call to the Project Rachel hotline, 312.337.1962; or 888.456.HOPE. A counselor will take the call, guiding the woman or man suffering from abortion through the initial steps on the road to healing. The Church, through its sacramental life, offers those who have been traumatized by abortion a powerful way to encounter the healing and reconciling love of God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and especially the Eucharist. By meeting with a priest or counselor, those seeking healing will prepare for Reconciliation. Forgiveness in the Catholic tradition is not forgetting what happened, or simply relief from guilt or punishment. Forgiveness means being restored by the God who knows and cares, and being transformed in the heart and created anew. Although the journey of forgiveness can be painful and frightening, each step you make toward home is evermore freeing and life-giving, rooted in forgiveness. In other news, on Saturday evening, February 1st, you are invited to bring statues to be blessed by Fr. Matt before the 5:00 Mass begins. One of the traditions of the Presentation of the Lord (also known as Candlemas), which we will be celebrating that weekend, is the blessing of statues of the Infant of Prague. Last year at this time, we blessed and dedicated our new Infant of Prague shrine in the church. We will extend that tradition by offering a blessing of all statues at the 5:00 pm Mass on February 1st. All are invited to participate in the blessing. Last week I observed many cars parked illegally in the Benton Street parking lot of our church. I have addressed this many times before and when we re-surfaced that lot a few years ago I added handicapped accessible stalls for cars and had more “no parking” signs added to the pavement in unattractive yellow paint to make sure that it was clear that those areas are designated life-safety areas by our local police and fire departments. I have been told that tickets will begin to be issued for those cars parked illegally in our lots. If you are more able bodied, please park in the Dolan side lot; all others PLEASE park in legally designated stalls only. If you get a ticket, please don’t complain to me about it. I have tried very kindly and persistently to ask you to not park illegally in our lots. We are very blessed to have more than enough parking spaces to accommodate everyone who wishes to participate in Mass here. Enjoy the week and God bless you all.
