  • RAIN NOISE TESTING FOR METAL ROOFSAcoustic insulation is becoming increasingly important, particularly in buildings which require reduction ofexternal noise or reduced intrusion from sound createdby rain impact on the roof. Buildings used for education, such as schools and university lecture theatres, as wellas other large buildings, very often have metal roofs.

Metal roofs are used in these buildings because they are lightweight, easy to

install and easy to maintain. However, the nature of the activities which take

place within these buildings means that noise reduction is a particular concern.

The performance of typical foam insulated cladding panels will provide a

significantly lower sound reduction and therefore lesser acoustic

performance than a typical built-up system, illustrated by the test results

    shown in the graph below.

Mike Davies and Sarah Wigglesworth were guest judges in a drawing competition, organised by Euroclad inconjunction with Architecture Today, to propose ideas for inhabiting the moon.

Long before the dream of lunar exploration shifted from science fiction to fact, the design of a moonbase hascaptured the imagination of architects and, following the success of last year’s Euroclad drawing competitionto reconstruct Brighton’s West Pier, it seemed an intriguing theme for the 2007 competition.

The judges were Sarah Wigglesworth, whose practice has recently designed an orbiting art gallery ‘Tate inSpace’, and Mike Davies of Roger Stirk Harbour & Partners, long-standing colleague of Richard Rogers andproject director for Heathrow Terminal Five, who has worked with NASA and is a lifelong amateur astronomer.Entries ranged from megalomaniac fantasies via surrealistic dreamscapes to quasi-realistic settlements.

First prize (£1000): Anti Space Aging, by K Yamazaki. Joint second prizes (£500 each): Moon Forest, M R Gimenez and Earth’s Ark, M Ng. Third prize (£250): Fly to the Moon for £10 inc taxes, J Horner.

Acoustic performance is measured by assessing the decibel (dB) soundreduction over a frequency weighted to the human ear – 100Hz to 5000Hz(5KHz). The average of this sound reduction is called the SRi, or SoundReduction Index.

An 80mm foam insulated composite panel with 0.5mm outer and 0.4mminner steel faces has an approximate SRi of 25dB. A single sheet of 0.7mmtrapezoidal profile steel has an approximate SRi of 24dB. The SRi of astandard built-up roof system is 45dB (based on Euroclad Elite System2.25, a typical built-up roof system achieving 0.25W/m2K U-value). In thecase of sound reduction the greater the dB figure, the better the soundreduction and therefore the larger decrease in noise.

The decibel difference in this case is 20dB, however bear in mind that a 3dBdifference equates to a doubling of power and a 10dB difference is requiredto double the subjective volume. A 1dB difference over a broad frequencyrange is noticeable to most people, while a 0.2dB difference can affect thesubjective impression of a sound.

  • The insulation used within metal constructions needs to deal with bothexternal noise sources, such as traffic and aeroplanes, as well as impactnoise created by rain. In some situations the potential sound pressurelevels created by rain falling on a roof can be in excess of 70dB (similar tostreet traffic). Historically, there has been very little information availableto help specifiers to choose the most effective sound insulation solutionsfor metal cladding.

With this in mind, Euroclad and Rockwool commissioned the BRE to carry outsound intensity measurements of rain noise on a variety of roof constructions, using ISO/CD 140-18 (ISO TC43/SC2 N 0751) and BSEN ISO 15186-1:2003. The tests compared a built-up profiled metal roofing systemagainst a foam cored composite metal roofing system.

Test 1 used a built-up system which comprised; Euroclad liner, Eurobar railand bracket spacer system, Rockwool cladding roll and Euroclad outerprofiled sheet. Test 2 used a composite panel with a trapezoidal externalprofile, PIR insulation foam and a trapezoidal liner. A rig was created tosimulate heavy rainfall and the Reverberant Sound Pressure Level (RSPL)beneath each construction was measured.

RSPL is the sound in an enclosed space which results from repeatedreflections at the boundaries – a big consideration in a large, empty space likea school assembly hall or gymnasium. Lower reverberant sound pressurelevels represent improved acoustic performance. Test 1 using Euroclad’sprofiled metal roofing and Rockwool insulation achieved a significantly lowerRSPL in gymnasiums than the equivalent PIR composite panel (65dBcompared to 77dB).

  • The multi-million pound research and development centre has been finished

with an aluminium composite material, helping complete this state-of-the-art

    development.

Located near the coast, the 2,200m2 building is subject to harsh climatic

conditions, making aluminium, rather than conventional steel, the perfect

choice. The LINEAR 3 rainscreen and bull nose soffits were manufactured

in silver ALPOLIC/fr, providing a contemporary and striking façade.

The detail design and installation was performed by DWT Services, who

selected the LINEAR 3 system based on its design flexibility and speed of

build. Panels are positively fixed to support rails, saving valuable time

on-site. The LINEAR 3 system helped DWT deliver a solution that met with

    the architect’s vision.

    ALPOLIC/fr comprises 0.5mm thick aluminium skins with a non-combustible

core, meaning it is up to 15% lighter than solid aluminium. This lightness

facilitates much easier installation, as well as ensuring less material is

required for the supporting grid. The unique coating process ensures the

panel colour is consistent throughout and the level of flatness achieved is

    unparalleled.

The £10 million development is part of the Technium programme and

aims to create a Centre of Excellence for the advanced engineering and

    motorsport industries.

Considered one of the most important initiatives launched in Wales during

the past 20 years, the Technium project is linked to Welsh universities and

aims to nurture businesses with high growth potential, increase research

and development and create high quality employment in the country.

LINEAR façades are available from Euroclad in a wide range of colours as

well as in marble and granite effects. Natural metals are also available

including stainless steel, copper, titanium, and zinc finishes.

Utilising the latest in cladding technology, EurocladFaçades has supplied rainscreen façade systems forthe high profile Auto Technium development in Llanelli,South Wales.

Euroclad was chosen by Sharkey & Co tosupply metal roofing and cladding systems forProLogis Development Limited’s giant newdistribution centre at The Bridge in Dartford, ina contract worth over £1.2m.

At the heart of the building envelope lies the Eurobar Extra spacer

system, which was chosen due to its structural stability and

    inherent strength.

Nick Heath of Sharkey & Co said of the spacer system: “I was

particularly pleased with the ease with which Eurobar Extra was

assembled and fixed on-site and the confidence in the entire roof

and wall construction such an innovative product gives you”.

Designed by RPS Burks Green, the distribution centre will be

spread over three buildings covering approximately 65,000m2.

Euroclad’s Secret fix system will be used to roof all three

buildings, manufactured from Corus Colorcoat HPS200® pre-

finished steel in Wedgewood Blue. Trapezoidal and half-round

profiles were chosen to clad the walls because of their

    contemporary appearance and excellent performance.

The Euroseam system specified at ESIS is a convex curved roof with a

radius of 10m. A major advantage of Euroseam is the exceptional array

of curving options available. Euroclad’s new machinery combined with the

latest CNC tooling techniques allow Euroseam to be produced with multiple

radii forms within a single sheet. Convex and concave forms can be

manufactured down to low radii with the tightest curves being just 5m.

Roofing and cladding manufacturer Euroclad has supplied a curved standing seam roof system for a newtraining facility for ESIS, the Welsh Education and School Improvement Service.

    EUROCLAD BUILDS FOR THE FUTURE

Euroclad offers comprehensive CITB accredited training on the installationof standing seam roofs to all contractors at its well-equipped TrainingCentre. All installers of Euroclad standing seam must be trained beforeinstalling the product.

The building for ESIS accommodates offices, training and meeting rooms, specialist training facilities and a resource area, which provide state-of-the-artfacilities to ultimately improve the education of children in the future.

  • 8

Taking the shape of an ellipse, the standing seam roof spans around

8,500m2 of floor space. Finished in Moorland Green, the roof is part of a

building designed to present a dynamic and inspiring appearance for 400

members of staff at the Quedgeley-based headquarters. A small area area

planted as a ‘green roof’ parallels the smooth, precise lines of self curved

    aluminium standing seam roof.

The size of the project required the main contractor, specialist roofing

contractor and manufacturer to work as an integrated and cooperative team.

Euroclad rolled the sheets on-site, including single lengths of over 120m.

Euroclad’s self-contained, mobile roll-former eliminates issues such as limited

site access, storage space, high transport costs and damage during transit.

A telescopic ramp allowed the sheets to be rolled directly to the roof, where

they were installed by M H Massey Roofing and Cladding Contractors. Euroclad

Fabrications manufactured bespoke flashings, shaped as two identical,

opposing radii. The flashings edge the perimeter of the roof, forming a precise,

    defined finish.

Martin Massey, Project Manager for M H Massey Roofing and Cladding

Contractors, says: “Systems from Euroclad allow us to install cost effectively,

    without compromising on quality”.

Blackdown Horticultural Consultants installed the green roof system on

around 200m2 of the Euroseam roof. Alan Tarr project managed the green

roof installation. He comments: “A green roof helps to enhance performance

by providing a natural system of containing heat, improving rainwater

management and providing a higher standard of air quality outside”.

Commenting on the striking building, Chief Constable Dr. Timothy Brain says:

“Not only will the building provide considerable operational benefits to the

people of Gloucestershire, but our staff will benefit from working in modern,

purpose-built open plan offices with better equipment and technology. It will

be an exciting building that will inspire the people who work in it”.

The Nordic Apartments, designed and built by Rydon Homes, are arranged inthree towers: Ikon, Arta and Stylus. Each tower houses a collection of one,two and three bedroom apartments with modern open plan layouts andimpressive panoramic views across London.

The LINEAR rainscreen façade system was specified at the NordicApartments in medium grey metallic ALPOLIC/fr composite material. Theeasy to install façade solution is comprised of a series of cassette panelsindividually hooked onto the support frame. The panels can be independentlyremoved and replaced without disrupting the rest of the façade, which isparticularly useful if solitary panels become damaged. Euroclad Façades’LINEAR systems are infinitely adjustable and construction of the panels canbegin anywhere on the building.

Euroclad Façades has implemented the latest CAD software into itsmanufacturing facility to ensure consistent accuracy and provide bespokefabrications. Euroclad Façades designed and manufactured bespoke windowpods for the Nordic Apartments using the innovative CAD technology. This meant that the flawlessly flat appearance was continued throughout theexterior of the building and the windows could be installed after the façade.

Manufactured by Mitsubishi, ALPOLIC/fr composite material provides anexceptional finish with great colour uniformity and impressive flatness.

The material is lightweight and rigid with a non-combustible core.

Steve Barnes of Rydon Group comments: “The LINEAR 2 system wasexceptionally easy to install and the ultra-flat panels add a modernappearance to the Nordic Apartments”.

Irish Minister for the Environment, Heritage and LocalGovernment, John Gormley TD, was recently presentedwith details on the environmental benefits of one of theworld’s first CarbonNeutral building envelopes, which hasbeen supplied by Euroclad at the new Bulmers plant inClonmel.

Euroclad’s cladding and mineral-cored composite systems were chosen for theroof and walls, as well as the internal firewalls as they met both Bulmers’ andJohn M Allen Architects’ requirements, supplying a non-combustible, completebuilding envelope solution that provides cradle to grave carbon neutrality.

Euroclad’s systems using Corus Colorcoat® pre-finished steel are assessedand approved under the Confidex Sustain™ system, which enables buildingenvelopes supplied by Euroclad to offer carbon neutrality through sociallyresponsible carbon offsetting schemes.

“We are proud to have played a major role in the project right from theoutset and that by using our systems, Bulmers has achieved the first CarbonNeutral metal clad building to be announced in Ireland“ said Michael Roche,Euroclad Director.

The new building houses three high-speed bottling lines and uses the firstCarbonNeutral steel cladding system in Ireland and one of the few inexistence in the world. The building has been developed under phase one ofBulmers -200m Capital Investment Programme.

Brendan McGuinness, Managing Director of Bulmers said that: “installingEuroclad systems featuring Corus Confidex Sustain™ was the most suitableoption for the company, which operates a stringent environmental policy”.

“This system is a great fit with the environmental ethos of Bulmers andsupports our efforts to constantly improve our systems, across the entireoperational and production process“ said Mr McGuinness.

Corus includes Euroclad in the Confidex Sustain™ System and, for every 1kg of CO2 emitted by the pre-finished steel, cladding, fixings and insulation,1kg of CO2 is off-set in climate friendly projects overseas.

Corus, which is one of Europe’s largest steel producers, works with theleading climate change company, The CarbonNeutral Company, to ensurethat the Confidex Sustain™ System provides a robust and fully traceable andauditable environmentally sustainable process.

Bulmers has undergone a period of development and expansion over the pasttwo years, which has resulted in an increase in production and capacity at theplant in Clonmel. Environmental responsibility is central to this development.

The new building is energy-efficient on a number of different levels:

    – It has high levels of insulation and is consequently a warm building, requiring low levels of heating – something not always associated with abottling hall.

    – It is heated by natural gas, which has not yet been used due to the highstandards of insulation.

    – The interior lighting is high frequency, low energy lighting, providing aworking light equal to daylight. This creates a better work atmosphereand adds to the efficiency of the operation.

Constructed of dark grey metallic ALPOLIC/fr aluminium composite material, the

Euroclad LINEAR panels are part of a detailed and complex façade, which also

features other types of curtain walling. After a difficult selection process, Euroclad

was chosen for the colour consistency of the material and the proven flatness of the

    panels themselves.

At a cost of £160m, the new court complex houses 47 courtrooms, four tribunal

courts, 75 consultation rooms, as well as office and administration space. Designed

by Denton Corker Marshall, the building is a striking addition to the Manchester

    cityscape.

Robert Simcock of Josef Gartner comments: “The ALPOLIC/fr panel system has a

unique finish and was chosen for this project as it offers a consistent colour to the

building façade over a large visible surface area. This consistency of colour cannot

be achieved with finishes such as anodised aluminium”.

The steel Euroseam roof naturally curves to a 45m radius and covers an

expanse of 4000m2. The standing seam roof system eliminates any leaks

as there are no gaps or penetrations in or around the roofing. Euroseam

can be rolled on-site for ease of construction and transportation. Working

on the principle of ‘zipping-up’, rolled side laps are closed over supporting

halters. This allows free movement under thermal expansion, no external

penetration of the sheet, no end laps and low maintenance performance.

The roof was supplied in Corus Colorcoat HPS200® pre-finished steel,

which ensures that it is durable and retains its hue and gloss. The subtle

shade of goosewing grey was applied to the roof to give the building a

    contemporary appearance.

Lyons Seafoods Ltd process, source and trade the highest quality prawns

and sea foods from controlled, ecologically sound and sustainable

sources. The company invested £3 million into the expansion of its

factory in Warminster, with the creation of 40 jobs. The development now

houses a chilled production facility built on an additional two acres of land

acquired next to the existing factory in Warminster.

    RIVALRIES ANDROOFING AT THE

    NEW HOME OFTHE GUNNERS

The sign over the entrance to the North Bank of Arsenal FC’s Highbury stadium used to

proudly proclaim ‘Welcome to Highbury – theHome of Football’. But from the start of the

2006/07 football season, the Gunners had abrand new home - Emirates Stadium - which

rises above the skyline of North London. The roof construction involved the combined

talents of Euroclad and Prater Roofing withmain contractor Sir Robert McAlpine Limited.

Arsenal played its first competitive game at Highbury against LeicesterFosse in 1913, winning 2–1. The club has spent a number of yearslooking for ways to develop a larger stadium; the ground at Highbury hada capacity of 38,500 – lower than the capacity of many European clubsof similar prominence.

Highbury stadium had little room for expansion, so despite challengingplanning conditions, the new stadium was built only 500m distance fromthe original on the site of a former industrial estate. Emirates Stadiumhas a seating capacity of 60,000, and is designed as a four-tiered bowl, with roofing over the seats but not over the pitch. The upper and lowertiers accommodate standard seating, while the middle tier is known asthe ‘club tier’ which houses premium priced corporate seating.

Designed by architects HOK Sport, the new stadium was constructed bySir Robert McAlpine as part a development worth over £390m. As well as the stadium itself, the complex contract included two bridgesover railway lines, altering existing roads, the construction of key-workerhousing and Arsenal official headquarters, a new waste recycling centreand a council depot.

The stadium itself has a 17 acre footprint and stands 41.5m from the pitchto the apex of the roof structure. The dramatic elliptical structural steel roofis one of the most striking features of the stadium. Four main issuessurrounded the design of the roof: It needed to comply with heightrestrictions, to maximise the pitch’s microclimate ensuring that

  • 19

the grass has good airflow, to create an exciting atmosphere forsupporters, and to produce a striking and constant eaves line.Structural engineers Buro Happold worked for around five years onanalysing and designing the roof structure. The result is a constructionthat is as light and thin as possible yet has an enclosing effect andconsequently produces a gladiatorial atmosphere.

Prater Roofing completed the 27,200m2 roof. Before the roofingcontractor moved onto site, over 3,000 tonnes of largely tubular steelwere installed to support the roof.

Prater’s first assignment was the design and installation of a safety net falland arrest system fixed to steel guide ropes. Usually these nets aresecured to the steelwork, but on this project a different solution had to befound, due to the aluminium soffit trays sited between the web of theroof’s steelwork. These solid aluminium soffit trays were designed byPrater, with input on design detailing and best manufacturing method fromEuroclad. Around 7,700 soffit panels finished in plain mill aluminium weremanufactured by Euroclad, and successfully conceal the structuralsteelwork. They also accommodate the stadium’s public address andlighting systems, the lighting being recessed into the soffits.

In addition, the soffits were perforated to provide the acousticattenuation necessary to enhance the atmosphere for spectators andplayers alike. Euroclad used specialist machinery and CAD design toensure each piece was perfectly produced and finished.

As each section of the soffits were installed on the roof, Prater fixed atraditional metal deck to the support structure over which was laid aplywood deck followed by a special grey single-ply membrane. Otherwork installations included GRP walkways and step-overs to the roofarea. Polycarbonate sheeting was used to marry into the roof finishes, designed to allow for structural and thermal movements.

HOK Sport has incorporated a number of environmentally sustainableaspects in the new stadium design. A passive and mixed modeventilation system will minimise the use of air conditioning below thepodium and daylight is maximised through large glazed areas on theexterior elevation.

In the meantime, a masterplan has been implemented for Highburystadium. The Grade II listed Art Deco East Stand and opposing WestStand are being converted into high-spec apartments, manyoverlooking the pitch. The north and south stands are being replacedwith new-build apartments. With the goalposts removed, the pitch willbecome a communal garden of over two acres.

The luxury development will include an underground swimming pool andfitness centre under the pitch, 24-hour concierge service and spaces topark cars and bicycles. Hundreds of Arsenal fans queued for hours tobuy a home at the overhauled ground when the apartments went on sale.Best of all for those buyers who are also Arsenal fans, the EmiratesStadium is just a short walk away.
