April Meeting Cancelled I feel it is important to make prudent choices to protect the health of our own friends as well as our community. Using the information that has been shared locally, as well as nationally, the decision has been made to cancel our April Prairie Quilt Guild meeting. A National Emergency has been declared and as well Sedgwick County has issued a ban on public gatherings of 250 people or more in a single location. The ban will remain in effect until further notice in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We had a little over 270 at our afternoon meeting in March. Canceling our April meeting will greatly reduce the risk for ourselves and for our families as well. Knowing that a great percent of our membership is of retirement or older age group I certainly do not want to put anyone at risk. However with the disease now well established in the US we are taking the health and welfare of our closest friends very seriously. We will comply with the ban until it is lifted and safe to assemble again. This is going to be rough considering we had planned to start volunteer assignments for the Regional Quilt Show at our April meetings. Please check your emails often for any guild membership announcements or information. As of this writing, plans for the show are still in progress and will continue unless the crowd-ban continues longer than expected. I know that both the spread of this disease and our decisions about it affect not only PQG programs and planning, but the lives of individuals. For many of you, the steps we are taking to protect the health of the community may involve significant inconvenience and personal sacrifice. Please accept my gratitude in advance for your goodwill and understanding. In this challenging situation, I have every confidence in our community and friends ability to pull together with kindness, care and concern for the common good. Stay healthy my dear friends. Sincerely, Kendra McBroom PQG President

2020 Vision

by Kendra McBroom

Yes our world has been turned upside down and in some respects gone crazed over the Global virus. You cannot live on this planet and not be affected in some way. The way we react to the panic is what will set you and me apart from others. We will either join in the pandemonium or keep our heads and make wise decisions. The safety and community rules and changes are affecting even our own Quilt Guild. We must make adjustments and re-route our previously set plans. None of us could have possibly anticipated this shift for our lives when we started this New Year. I react to stress with busyness. I flit around keeping myself busy to occupy my hands and mind. The main stress I feel as PQG President is making decisions that affect hundreds of people. I want to make the right ones so I call and get others opinions before I jump to conclusions. Like it or not, we can figure out how to do things while we are home and not go stir crazy. I was looking forward to the retreat; however, this is going to be a staycation for me. First I am going to organize my projects and finish up what I can with what I have. I am going to keep charity quilts loaded on my longarm and knock them out. I am going to actually read a book. This is a great time to clean out a drawer (or garage) that I have ignored since last fall. Many of you know that hubby and I go out to eat a lot. I plan to dig out the crock pot and Instant Pot and fire it up for some tasty meals. I like board games or card games so maybe I can interest him in doing that. I am not much of a television watcher, but I could select a movie and enjoy it together with popcorn. Oh yes, twelve of the world’s most famous museums are offering free virtual tours during the pandemic. I would advise checking on your friends, see how you can help if they are needy. Offer what you have or ask what you can do for them. It is never wrong to be kind. Be safe, wash your hands and I will update as I have information that pertains to our Guild or members. Please help notify your friends that do not have email. Stay healthy my friends and I look forward to seeing all of you in May.

Due to the cancellation of our April guild meetings, I have been in contact our

contracted speaker, Lori Triplett, and are making every effort to reschedule

her in the near future. Donna Loehr, Vice President

Books ordered from Mickey Depre –

If you ordered any books from Mickey Depre after her visit in February, I have them! All of the books ordered

on her website were shipped to me in one shipment and were available at the March guild meeting. If you

missed picking up your book in March, please contact me to make arrangements to get your book – either by picking it up at my home or at the next guild meeting.

2019-2020 Block of the Month - April 20120

Kansas Theme Block #7 Turkey Tracks

For month 7, we will be making our 6½ inch center block entitled Turkey Tracks. Following with the Kansas theme, we are looking at the variety of birds and the surroundings of Kansas. We will continue with the white background and the two other color choices to complete this block. From your white (or background fabric) cut 4-2½ inch blocks. Cut 2-2¼ inch squares. Cut 1-2½ inch block of your brown (or dark background color). Cut 2-2¾ inch squares, then cut these in half on diagonal to yield 4 dark halves. Next, cut 2-2¼ inch squares. Cut 4-1½ inch gold (or lighter background color) square. Take a 2¼ inch white square and lay it on top of a 2¼ inch brown square, right sides together. Draw a line from one corner to another on the back and sew a ¼ inch seam along both side of this line. Cut down the center of the line, forming two triangles. Do not open these up. Instead make another cut down the center peak to the middle of the long triangle side, forming two triangles. Open these out and iron the back seam. You should have 4 triangles, each with two colors, one side white and the other brown. Repeat with second set of white and brown squares. Place the brown 2½ inch block in the center. Place the 4 white (or background fabric) squares around this brown square to form a cross pattern. Add the 4 brown (or dark) ½ triangles in the corner of the crosses. Take the gold square and place them at each corner of the quilting block (the point of the square should be pointing towards the center of block). Now the two-colored triangles will fit with the brown edge next to the gold square and the white triangle edge to the outside of the 6½ in block. Sew the brown/white triangle to one side of the gold square. Sew the other side of the gold square with the other brown/white triangle. You should end up with a large triangle, similar in size to the brown triangle. If is too large, trim it down to be the same size as your brown triangle. Take care to leave seam allowance at arrows to keep points on finished piece. Lay this unit on top of brown triangle & sew the long edges together. This combo square should be 2½ inches square. Sew the combo square (should measure 2½ inch) to the white square beside it. Sew the opposite combo square to the other side of the white square. Do these same steps for the third row. For row two, sew the white square to a brown square. Sew the other white square on the opposite side of the brown square. Sew all three rows together. Quilt square should be 6½ inches square. Border: Churndash Design Your 6½ inch quilt block above with be bordered with the Churndash design from previous months. See October month instructions to complete these.

Thank you to members who donated 25 items in March. They have already been delivered and well received. At the Children's Psychiatric Hospital quilts are given to those young people who have "inconclusive placements." They are pleased to have something to comfort them on an uncertain journey. At ICT/SOS the teens are given a duffel when they leave with a blanket included. They prefer the ones containing quilts. The women using the Transitional Housing program have left their homes with few possessions. They and any children they bring with them need many things. They are comforted by knowing that someone cared enough to make them a quilt. Keep up the good work. The committee will keep working on kits to make them more fun to sew up. Sue, Shirley, and Janice
