More Information on Helzberg Helzberg has a stated policy on conflict dia-monds as stated here.

“Helzberg Diamonds is committed to the ongoing global effort to stop the trade in conflict diamonds, a term that refers to diamonds that have been used to fuel decades-long wars and atrocities in many African countries, and that are sus-pected to have financed terrorist activities.”

"Helzberg Diamonds is committed to upholding the highest human rights standards when purchasing diamonds and jewelry. We are also working with the industry to ensure that all members of the supply chain purchase diamonds that come from sources that meet the same high standards.”

Turn to the next page to learn about the Kimber-ley Process Certification Scheme - a system de-signed by the World Diamond Council, the Jew-elers of America, and the United Nations to cer-tify the sources of uncut diamonds. Recently, Helzberg Diamonds was among eight retail jew-elers recognized by Oxfam America and Earth-works for their efforts to support reforms in the gold mining industry. These reforms include respecting basic human rights as outlined in in-ternational conventions and law.

If you have bought any diamonds or jewelry from www.helzberg.com, please feel free to give us your feedback on the quality of service and products including any www.helzberg.com online complaints and special attention or ser-vice given by www.helzberg.com online.

Kimberley Process

Certification Scheme

T he Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is designed to certify the

origin of diamonds from sources which are free of conflict. The idea being that a diamond origi-nating from a country in conflict in which the diamonds feature heavily cannot substantiate that such diamonds are NOT the result of or the reason for such conflict.

After some negotiations, the process was estab-lished in 2002 to prevent rebel groups and their rivals from financing their wars and conflicts from the sale of diamonds. The certification scheme aims at preventing these “conflict or blood diamonds”, from entering the mainstream rough diamond market. It was set up to try to assure consumers that by purchasing diamonds they were not financing war and human rights abuses and has been criticized by some parties as a Public Relations exercise rather than an effective process.

The KPCS originated out of a meeting of South African diamond producing states in the Kim-berley region, South Africa in May 2000. hence the name.

In December of 2000 the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution calling for the creation of a scheme that would allow certification of diamonds that had not been sold in order to finance civil war and the KPCS was finally agreed upon by nations involved in the trade of diamond and diamond-mining and pro-duction companies, notably De Beers and the World Diamond Council, in November 2002.

For a country to participate, it must ensure that any diamond originating from that country does not finance a rebel group or other entity seeking to overthrow a UN-recognized government. And that every diamond exported must be ac-companied by a Kimberley Process certificate proving that no diamond is imported from, or exported to, a non-member of the scheme.

This three-step plan is a simple description of the steps taken to ensure a “chain” of countries that deal exclusively with non-conflict dia-monds. Full details can be found in the official KPCS documents available online.

The KPCS is essentially self-enforced. Supervi-sion of the Process is done by the Chair, elected on an annual basis at a plenary meeting. A Working Group on Monitoring monitors each participant to ensure that it is implementing the scheme correctly. The Working Group reports to the Chair.

In 2004, Congo (Brazzaville) was removed from the scheme because it was unable to prove or substantiate the origin of its gems. For coun-tries economically dependent on diamond ex-ports, this can be a substantial punishment, since it removes trade with much of the rest of the world.

Whilst the Process has been broadly welcomed by groups aiming to improve human rights in countries previously affected by conflict dia-monds, such as Angola, some say it does not go

far enough. For instance, Amnesty Interna-tional says “[We] welcome the Kimberley Process as an important step to dealing with the problem of conflict diamonds. But until the diamond trade is subject to mandatory, impartial monitoring, there is still no effective guarantee that all conflict diamonds will be identified and removed from the market.” Ca-nadian aid group One Sky (funded in part by the Canadian government) concurs with Am-nesty’s view saying “If effectively implement-ed, the Kimberley Process will ensure that dia-monds cannot be used to finance war and atrocities…However, without a system of ex-pert, independent and periodic reviews of all countries, the overall process remains open to abuse.”.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a good idea but does need more work to be effective and not just perceived as a PR job.

Investing in Diamonds Through a Diamond ETF

G old investment, or any other commodity for that matter, is comparatively easy.

Gold, although it comes in many forms, shapes and sizes, is basically a metal that is standard throughout. Diamond is a different matter. It has no fungibility such as gold or other pre-cious metals. Due to the diversity of diamonds there is no standard by which one can measure one a one for one basis. The liquidity is limited and special expertise is required in order to establish the value of a diamond or selectin of diamonds. In addition most of the transactions are private and there is minimal real time mar-ket pricing to rely on.

How can one invest, then, in diamonds other than actually buying some diamonds and hop-ing their value will increase in time?

One possibility is a Diamond Exchange Traded Fund such as has been developed by Pure-

Funds, the PureFunds ISE Diamond/Gemstone ETF set up on November 2012.

Given the complexity of diamond investment the fund has found a way to provide investors a way to invest in the supply and demand cy-cles or rough and polished gemstones and at-tempts to engage in the complete cycle from the diamond dug up out of the ground through the entire process and into the retail market.

This is done by holding an investment in around 23 or so stock in various companies actively engaged in the diamond industry across 6 continents, the idea being that these companies are representative of the life cycle of a diamond from start to finish.

According to PureFunds,

“The ETF attempts to represent the full life cycle of the gemstone industry via some of the largest and most liquid public companies of the industry in the world. The fund represents some of the largest rough diamond producers

Page 9: In this Issue · 2013. 5. 30. · Promise Rings Colored Gems Anklets Watches & Accessories Also Helzberg have their own diamond and jewelry collections. Helzberg Diamond Masterpiece

in the world, such as, Petra Diamonds (6.31% of the Fund), as well as, exploration and early stage production companies such as Storno-way Diamond Corp (2.01% of the Fund).”

“The ETF also holds companies that primarily deal in the sale of polished stones and/or hold inventory such as Signet Jewels (9.03% of the Fund). Vertically integrated companies that produce or procure rough stones and also sell polished stones such as Chow Tai Fook Jewel-lery (8.69% of the Fund), Harry Winston Dia-mond Corp (8.06% of the Fund), and Anglo American (5.80% of the Fund), which owns 85% of DeBeers, are also included.”

The chart displayed shows the holdings in each of these companies held at 11/30/2012 and, of course, are subject to change. Although it is a clever way to invest in dia-monds and there are some advantages to this, there are disadvantages also. These include the fact that some companies may not be exclu-sively diamond although may hold an influ-ence of the industry. A typical example is An-glo American which is concerned with the dia-mond industry in that it owns 85 percent of De Beers. The stock price and value of such com-panies can be dependent on the performance of other areas of interest to the company. In addition the performance of the stocks can differ from the price performance of physical gemstones due to both systematic and non-systematic risks. Systemic risks are those relat-ing to stock market performance and non-systemic related to company performance. Systemic risk is dependent on the stock market performance and is the inherent risk one takes by investing in that quarter. The way to reduce non-systematic risk is by diluting the potential risk through diversification into a number of companies. Advantages of investment into diamonds in-clude:

More value per weight than gold Diamonds never go out of fashion Rarity Durability Ease of transport and storage When a good balanced portfolio The chart give the percentage of the fund for each stock held based upon these and other risks to provide a balanced portfolio that is representative of the diamond market as a whole. It should be noted, as per the prospectus that: “Individual shares may only be purchased and sold on a national securities exchange through a broker dealer. You can purchase and sell individual shares of the Fund throughout the trading day like any publicly traded security. The Fund’s shares are listed on the NYSE Ar-ca. The price of the Fund’s shares is based on market price, and because use exchange trad-ed fund shares trade at market prices rather than net asset value (“NAV”), shares may trade at a price greater than NAV (premium) or less than NAV (discount). The Fund issues and redeems shares on a continuous basis, at NAV, only in blocks of 50,000 shares (“Creation Units”), principally in kind for se-curities included in the Underlying Index Ex-cept when aggregated in Creation Units, the Fund’s shares are not redeemable securities” Not long ago, Diamond Investing News spoke with Paul Zimnisky, CEO of PureFunds. One question asked was, “Since it’s not a physical-ly backed fund and there are no futures con-tracts or other forms of trade, how does your ETF account for the qualitative nature of valu-ing gems? How is it priced? Zimnisky Responded, “All of the companies in the fund are exposed to diamonds or other gemstones in one way or another, so fluctua-tions in the price of diamonds should directly affect these companies’ cash flows. As far as how the fund is priced, the fund’s index is based on a market cap-weighted meth-

The fund is passively managed, attempting to mimic the stocks in the index as closely as possible, and the stocks are marked to net as-set value every day, which is right around where the fund is usually priced.” For someone who is interested in diversifying into other investment opportunities, diamonds could well hold the key and investing in Dia-monds through a Diamond ETF such as Pure-Funds may well be the answer. De Beers Raises Prices The De Beers May sight had an estimated value of $600 million as the company raised its rough diamond prices by approx-imately 4 percent. The price hike reflected a change in list prices on various goods as well as adjustments made to De Beers box assortments. Dealers noted that trading on the second-ary market was significantly reduced fol-lowing the sight that ended on May 9 as De Beers goods are now selling at around list price, erasing the 5 percent premiums they had gained in the past few months. One India-based sightholder noted that they were losing money on the secondary market when accounting for the various broker fees and other costs associated with the goods. Most sightholders were frustrated by the sight and expressed surprise at the price hike as it followed an increase of approxi-mately 3 percent implemented in April. Rapaport estimates that rough prices have increased by approximately 10 percent so far in 2013. In contrast, the RapNet Dia-mond Index (RAPI) for 1-carat certified polished diamonds has increased by only 0.3 percent, while RAPI for 0.30-carat stones has risen 9 percent this year, driven by strong Chinese demand for these goods.

U.S. Jewelry Store Sales +10%

Jewelry store sales in the U.S. rose 9.9 percent year on year to $2.31 billion in March. In addition, the consumer price in-

dex (CPI) for jewelry fell 2.9 percent in March. Jewelry store sales remained strong during the first quarter, increasing 8.2 percent to $6.99 billion compared with the first three months of 2012. The CPI for jewelry has also been lower each month this year. Meanwhile, advanced estimates for sales at U.S. department stores in April reflected a decline of 6.9 percent year on year at $13 billion. The estimated sales for all retail and food services, excluding mo-tor vehicle and parts, rose 3 percent in April to $334.3 billion. Retail trade sales improved 3.6 percent during the month.

Christie's Sells 101.73ct. for $27M

WATCH NOW: Christie’s Geneva sale of magnificent jewels totalled $102.1 million and was 86 percent sold by lot. The top

lot was a 101.73-carat, D, flawless pear-shaped diamond that sold for $26.7 mil-lion, or $254,400 per carat, to Harry Win-ston Inc., which promptly named the stone the Winston Legacy. The second top lot of the sale was a single-strand natural pearl necklace that sold for $8.5 million. Lau-rence Graff bought a 26.24-carat, D, po-tentially flawless oval-shaped diamond ring for $4.5 million and a 23.43-carat, D, potentially flawless diamond sold to Essex Global Trading for $3.6 million.

Sotheby's Sale Nets $78M

Sotheby's Geneva garnered $78.2 million at its auction of magnificent and noble jew-els with 87 percent sold by lot. The top lot

was a 27.9-carat, D, internally flawless cushion-shaped modified brilliant-cut dia-mond ring that fetched $4.4 million or $156,362 per carat. A cushion-shape, 74.53-carat, SI1, fancy yellow diamond sold for $2.9 million. A pair of natural pearl and dia-mond pendant earrings from the collection of screen legend Gina Lollongbrigida sold for $2.4 million, setting an auction record for a pair of pearl ear pendants. Jewels from Lollongbrigida sold for double their presale estimate and fetched $4.96 million.

Online Retail Sales +13%

Online metrics firm comScore Inc. reported that retail ecommerce sales in the U.S. jumped 13 percent year on year to $50.2 billion during the first quarter that ended on March 31. The top-performing online prod-uct categories were, digital content and subscriptions, apparel and accessories, sport and fitness, consumer electronics and consumer packaged goods all of which grew at least 20 percent year on year. The ecommerce spending at retailers during the quarter accounted for 10.6 percent of dis-cretionary dollars spent, the highest share on record, according to comScore.

JCPenney's Loss Jumps to $348M

J.C. Penney Company Inc. reported sales plummeted 16.4 percent year on year to $2.64 billion for the first fiscal quarter that ended on May 4. Same-store sales dropped 16.6 percent. The retailer reported a loss of $348 million or $1.58 per share compared with a loss of $163 million or 75 cents per share one year ago. The company began to reverse a major restructuring program dur-ing the quarter for which it incurred $72 mil-lion in management transition charges. JCPenney took a home office and stores charge of $28 million, store fixtures charge

of $28 million and management transition charge of $16 million.

DGSE's Profit -40%

DGSE Companies reported that revenue fell 7 percent year on year to $30.5 million and profit plunged 40 percent to $300,412 for the first quarter that ended on March 31. While the company experienced revenue increases for its bullion segment and the wholesale watch division, this was offset by decreases in sales for jewelry, and scrap and rare coin segments. Gross profit mar-gin dropped to 18.4 percent from 20.5 per-cent one year ago, due primarily to a change in product mix with more revenue from lower-margin bullion sales, and less from higher-margin jewelry and scrap sales.

Hayek to Head Harry Winston

The Swatch Group appointed Nayla Hayek, the chairwoman of

the company, as the new CEO of Harry Winston Inc., the former retail arm of Harry Winston Diamond Corporation. Hayek had already been nominated chairwoman of Harry Winston when the luxury retailer was acquired in March. Swatch purchased Harry Winston as part of $1 billion agreement with Harry Winston Diamond Corporation, which changed its name to Dominion Diamond after the sale. Swatch reported group sales of $8.8 billion in 2012, up 14 percent year-on-year and profit surged 26 percent to $1.8 billion. The company anticipates revenue growth of 5 percent to 10 percent in 2013.

Gemfields Production +33%

Gemfields reported that production from its Kagem emerald mine in Zambia jumped 33 percent year on year to 6.5 million car-ats for the third fiscal quarter that ended on March 31. Kagem's grade also im-proved during the period, from 236 carats per tonne of ore one year ago to 265 car-ats this year and Gemfields lowered unit production costs 34 percent to 56 cents per carat. The bulk-sampling operations at the com-pany's Mozambican ruby project are pro-gressing, according to Gemfields, which plans to hold its first ruby auction in about one year from now. The core infrastructure is largely established and the miner and its partner have stepped up security at the property to reduce illegal mining. Primary stage mining and processing equipment is on site and operational. A pilot and semi-mobile ore processing plant has been de-signed, fabricated and commissioned and continues to test the characteristics of the ore.

Dominion Revises Rough Forecast Higher

Dominion Diamond Corporation revised its production forecast at the Diavik diamond in Canada up 11 percent to 6.6 million car-ats for 2013. The increase was attributed to processing more of Diavik's stockpiled ore, with Dominion Diamond adding that

further revisions may be forthcoming in June. A new mine plan and budget for the company's recently acquired Ekati dia-mond mine is currently under review, but Dominion foresees production of approxi-mately 1 million carats in 2013. Mine production follows the calendar year, but Dominion Diamond is currently in its fiscal year 2014 and it expects rough dia-mond sales to reach $730 million, with $365 million each worth of revenue coming from the 40 percent share of Diavik and the 80 percent share of Ekati.

Gold Jewelery Jumps

The World Gold Council (WGC) reported that global jewelry demand by weight jumped 12 percent year on year for the first quarter of 2012, led by 19 percent growth in China and 15 percent growth in India and the Middle East. Demand from the U.S. rose 6 percent. De-mand for coins and bars surged 52 percent in India, jumped 43 percent in the U.S. and increased 22 percent in China. However, overall demand for gold in the first quarter fell 13 percent due to large outflows from gold exchange-traded funds. By value, gold demand fell 16 percent to $50.5 billion and the average price of gold fell 3 percent per ounce. Marcus Grubb, the managing director at the WGC, ex-plained that first quarter figures showed the fundamen-tals of gold remained robust prior to the price drop in April.

M any people ask, what is a Peridot? The Peridot is not a gem stone that you see

much written about. It has had a sort of sleepy life until recently when it has started to be-come popular again. The Peridot has been used primarily as jewel-ery through the ages. The first recorded use was in Egyptian jewelery from before 100 years BC with stones from an island in the Red Sea off the Egyptian cost being used at that time. Since then it has also been used in Rome, Europe and gained much popularity during the baroque period for a short while. Recently, in Kashmir, stones of exceptional quality, color and transparency have been found and have helped to make the Peridot more popular again. This gemstone has garnered three names in its life. 'Peridot' or 'chrysolite', from the Greek. 'Gold stone', and 'olivine'. The Peridot is a form of the mineral olivine. In the gemstone trade it is called 'Peridot', derived from the Greek word 'peridona', which means 'to give richness to'.

Curiously, the Peridot is one of the very few gemstones that come in only one colour. This is caused by very fine traces of iron contained within the stone. The degree or intensity of the color is caused by how much iron there is in the gemstone. So, although there is only one color the quality and depth of the color can vary. Peridot is also not very hard, like a dia-mond, but softer, being only 6.5 or 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness where diamond is a ten and talc a one. Nevertheless it is still a ro-bust little stone and fairly easy to look after if treated well. Some of the best stones come from the border area of Pakistan and Afghanistan but Peridot can also be found in Africa, Australia, China, Myanmar (East Burma) Sri Lanka and the USA among others. Cutting a peridot can be difficult as it cracks easily. It requires some study first to find the coarser inclusions and remove them. Once this is completed the stone is then very stable and can be worn without any special care other than the normal standard care given to any valuable jewel. Interestingly, peridot is the only gemstone that has been found in meteorites, giving rise to the idea that some gemstones may originate some-where out there. Whatever the case, to know what a peridot is, is to like and enjoy Peridot even more. Jewelry is very important to augment your beauty and bring out the elegance and class in you. Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August and is utilized widely as a valuable jewelry item. Besides, it is also regarded as an anniversary stone and is used by couples to celebrate their sixteen years of marriage. In mineralogical terms Peridot is better known as

Olivine, due to its olive-green coloring, and is widely sought after by millions of people.

Peridots are widely found in Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Myanmar and South Africa, while in the U.S, the state of Arizona is the major source of this beautiful gemstone. Peri-dots come in different hues of green, from pale yellowish green, olive green and bottle green to a vibrant apple green, and each one of these colors are hugely popular amongst females for their brightness and beauty.

Technical Specifications: Here are some technical specifications of Peridot. Category: Mineral Chemical formula: (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 Color: Yellow, to yellow-green, olive-green, to brownish Crystal system: Orthorhombic Cleavage:: Poor Fracture: Conchoidal Mohs scale hardness: 6.5-7 Luster: Vitreous (glassy) Streak: White Specific gravity: 3.2-4.3 Refractive index: 1.64-1.70 Birefringence: +0.036

Peridot Mining In the olden days, Peridot was mined from the volcanic island of St. John in Egypt, but later people totally forgot about this gemstone only to rediscover it again in the 1900s. It is be-lieved that Peridot was a favorite amongst Egyptian women and even Cleopatra wore and favored these gems. During the middle ages, Peridot was brought to central Europe by the Crusaders but with time it faded out from peo-ple's memory only to revive in the 1990s.

Peridot jewelry can be of various kinds. Wom-en all over the world wear rings made out of this gemstone and they are also worn in the form of bracelets and earrings and necklaces. Nowadays such gems are also used in making engagement rings and have started to gain pop-ularity amongst women.

When planning to buy Peridots be prepared to checkout their authenticity. Make sure that what you are buying is the real deal and genu-ine, natural stone. Synthetic or lab created stones can also look similar to the original and come at extremely cheap prices but they don't have any real value so you should never opt for synthetic stones. Get your jewelry from a repu-table store or dealer who has a certificate of authenticity because that way you wouldn't be duped out of your money.

While looking for Peridots make sure that they have a rich color because faded stones aren't really of any value. Always look for clean, clear stones that are without any cracks be-cause minor cracks can turn worse with time and may even break up, so you must at all times try and avoid such stones.

Lastly, Peridot has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Moh scale so any sharp blow might split and break it easily. You must be careful with this gemstone and take extra care while handling it. Generally while planning to buy such stones for your jewelry you must opt for multi-faceted and mixed cut stones as they obtain the best color for the stone and also protect against any unseen damage. You must also be careful to prevent any sort of cleaning of Peridot with chemicals as it is reactive to chemicals and may lose its charm.

Diamond Glossary

H ere are some common words used in the Diamond Industry and in this newsletter.

4Cs Diamonds are graded and priced according to what is universally referred to as the "4C's". They are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. Below an explanation of each of the 4Cs: Appraisal A valuation of property by the estimate of an authorized person. With diamonds the apprais-al is a written estimate of the approximate re-tail replacement value of diamond jewelry, which may be used for insurance coverage or other purposes. It is not the same as a grading report, which evaluates a diamond's character-istics (such as cut, clarity, carat, symmetry, etc.) only. Blemish A scratch or abrasion on the surface of a dia-mond. Provided they do not interfere with the symmetry of the stone and do not interfere with light in the stone they are not considered important. Brilliance brilliance is the white light that is reflected through the top of a diamond. This can be in-crease by the diamond being cut to the correct proportions to take advantage of the reflection of light from the facets to the brilliance. Brilliant Cut A Brilliant Cut, sometimes called the Ameri-can Brilliant, is a 58-facet round diamond,

This shape and faceting arrangement is de-signed for maximum brilliance, sparkle and beauty and is perhaps the most popular shape. Carat Perhaps everyone know the term carat. The basic unit of weight for a diamond. A carat is equal to 200 milligrams, or one-fifth of a gram. It is said that the word is derived from the word carob. In early India the carob bean was used for measuring the weight of gems as eve-ry carob seed weighs exactly the same. Clarity Clarity is the term given to indicate the purity of a diamond. Most diamonds have minute im-perfections and the clarity is the way of grad-ing the purity depending on the number of im-perfections the diamond has or does not have. Cloud A cluster of very small inclusions inside a dia-mond that give a cloud effect. Tiny clouds will not interfere with the flow of light, but large or numerous clouds can affect brilliance. Color Diamonds are traditionally thought of as white or clear. But diamonds in fact do have color and this can be graded. Crown The crown is the top section of a diamond, above its widest point, or girdle, that compris-es the table, and the star-, bezel- and upper-girdle facets. Culet A facet on the very bottom of a diamond. It is best to have a small or medium culet. A large culet will make it look like there is a hole in the bottom of the stone due to leakage of light. Absence of a culet makes the point of the dia-mond more easily damaged or chipped.

Cut This describes the shape of the diamond. There are basically eight cuts of diamond.

Round Brilliant Emerald Cut Princess Cut Heart Cut Oval Cut Marquise Cut Pear Cut Round Brilliant

Some of the most popular diamond cuts in-clude Heart, Emerald, Marquise (Oval with pointed ends), Oval, Pear, and Princess with the Round Brilliant (R/B) probably being the most popular. Depth % (percentage) The height of a diamond (measured from the culet to the table) divided by the width of the diamond. The depth % is critical to creating brilliance and fire in a diamond. A depth % that is too low or too high will cause light to leak out of the stone, causing the diamond to lose sparkle. Depth The height of a diamond (measured from the culet at the very bottom to the large table facet on the top). Diamond The simplest of all the gemstones consisting of pure crystallized carbon. A diamond crystalliz-es under enormous pressure deep beneath the earth's surface Diamonds can be from 1 to 3 billion years old--more than two-thirds the age of the Earth itself. Diamond is also the hardest substance known to man. In fact, it can only be cut and polished by another diamond. Despite its hardness, however, it is not indestructible. If a diamond is struck at the right angle, it can chip or break.

Eye-clean A diamond that has no inclusions visible to the naked eye -- flawless to the naked eye. This is normally true of all diamonds with a grade of about SI-1 or higher on the clarity scale. Facet The polished flat surfaces on a diamond. For example, a round brilliant diamond has 58 fac-ets including the culet. Fair Cut Diamonds cut to less than perfect proportions. They have been cut to maximize the weight of the stone instead of enhancing the brilliance and sacrifice fire and brilliance. The less ex-pensive stones may have good and very good cuts but will not have the same brilliance and fire that people would expect from a diamond. Fire Fire is the colored light that is reflected from inside the diamond. Colored light reflected from within a diamond. As in a prism light en-tering a diamond is divided up into the spec-trum. The better quality diamond with better proportions the better the 'fire' of the diamond. This is called "refraction" or "dispersion" in the diamond trade. Fluorescence A glow, usually of a bluish color, which ema-nates from certain diamonds when exposed to ultraviolet light. Two thirds of all diamonds fluoresce to some degree but how they do so depends very much on the type of ultra violet light they are under. Girdle this is the narrow band around the outer cir-cumference of a diamond. This is where a jew-elry setting holds the diamond in a ring. Good Cut Diamonds cut with acceptable, but not perfect,

proportions. They generally have very good brilliance and fire and make excellent jewelry. Ice A colloquial word for diamonds, much favored by Hollywood in movies about gangsters. Ideal Cut Ideal Cut diamonds are usually more expen-sive than all other cut grades. This is due to three major factors: 1) extra time and skill are required to cut to such precision; 2) they are in great demand, and perhaps most importantly, 3) more of the original rough diamond must be sacrificed to achieve ideal proportions. Ideal Cut diamonds are also round diamonds that are perfectly proportioned (having depth percent-ages and table percentages that some people feel produce a "perfect" balance of fire and brilliance). They almost always have the high-est grades on polish and symmetry as well, in-dicating the great care taken in the overall fashioning of the stone. These diamonds have had the finest craftsmanship to maximize the beauty of the diamond. Inclusion An impurity within a diamond, such as a spot or irregularity in the crystal structure of the stone. These can include a cloud, a fracture, another diamond inside the bigger one, liquid, etc. Inclusions can either be visible with the naked eye (usually SI-3 clarity and below) or visible only under magnification. Fewer inclu-sions means a finer clarity grade, increased rarity, and increased value. Kimberlite Kimberlite is a mica peridotite and a source of rich deposits of diamonds. The deposits occur-ring at Kimberley, South Africa were the first recognized and the source of the name. The Kimberly diamonds were originally found in decomposed kimberlite which was colored yel-low by limonite, and so was called "yellow ground." Deeper workings encountered less

altered rock, undecomposed kimberlite, which miners call "blue ground. Loupe A loupe is a small magnifying glass used to view gemstones. Usually 10x, or ten-power, magnification. The FTC requires all diamond grading be done under 10-power magnifica-tion; any flaws not detected under this magni-fication are considered to be non-existent by some dealers. Make Make describes the quality of the finish and proportions of a diamond. A good make will have proportions that maximize brilliance and fire. A poor make will decrease sparkle and fire due to the loss of light as it travels through the stone. The cutter is responsible for the make of a diamond as he is the one that cuts it to achieve the maximum brilliance and fire. Mohs Scale The Mohs scale is a table of relative hardness that ranks a mineral's strength and durability on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being talc and 10 being diamond. Developed over 100 years ago by Frederic Mohs. Moissanite Moissanite is silicon carbide and is manufac-tured in a laboratory. It is virtually indistin-guishable from diamonds and it takes a real expert with special equipment to be able to tell the difference. Pavilion This is the bottom half of a diamond, from the lower girdle to the culet tip at the bottom. The pavilion should be neither too deep or too shal-low otherwise light will leak out and the dia-mond will lose fire and brilliance. Peridotite Any of a group of igneous rocks having a granite like texture.

Point A measure of diamond weight. One point equals 1/100th of a carat. A diamond that weighs 0.50 carat is said to weigh 50 points. Polish A grade given to the external finish of a stone. The polish grades are from poor to excellent. Good polish is crucial for maximum brilliance of a diamond, but it takes a trained eye to dis-tinguish between polish grades. Poor Cut Poorly cut diamonds with proportions and fin-ish that make them look relatively lifeless to the eye. Such stones are ok for industry but not for jewelry. Sparkle The 'sparkle' of a diamond is the combination of fire and brilliance. The light that reflects out of a diamond as it moves. Sometimes called "scintillation" by older dealers. Stones A word for diamonds and other precious gems. Symmetry A diamond should by symmetrical. Symmetry is the grade used to describe the uniformity of the cut of the diamond. This can range from excellent down to poor. The un-symmetrical a diamond is the poorer will be the quality of light through the stone. Table The top or large flat face of the diamond is

called the table. It should be in proportion to the rest of the diamond to gain the best fire and brilliance. Tourngat Diamonds cut to fit very strict requirements for depth percentage and table percentage. These outstanding proportions maximize fire and brilliance in the diamond. Also a region of northern Quebec. Weight the weight of a diamond is measured in car-ats.A carat is .2 grams. A gram of diamond would be a massive 5 carats. Very large in dia-mond terms although the actual diamond is physically small. Wholesale Wholesale prices are listed PER CARAT to show this price difference. For instance, a 1/2-carat round brilliant diamond of G/VS2 quality may sell for $3,600 per carat ($1,800 for the stone), whereas a 1-carat stone of the same quality would likely cost $6,300 per carat ($6,300 for the stone) because it is twice the size and more rare. Zirconia Also known as Cubic Zirconia, this is a sub-stance often used as a substitute to genuine dia-monds. It is a carborundum substance and easi-ly told from diamonds due to being heavier than diamonds.
