At yesterday’s staff meeting a comment was made that we have only 10 Fridays until Christmas and it made me realise just how quick this year has disappeared! With only 7 weeks left of our school year, many exciting transformations are in process to prepare for 2017. 2017 will see a designated high school. No longer will our student transition into a year 6/7 class but we will have multi age options for our 7and 8, 9 and 10. To further support this our staff have been working on a more age appropriate reward system that will have our high school students focusing more on internal development and progression rather than double delights. We are realigning assessment to strengthen our transition from Year 10 to Year 11 and this will develop further so that our students are ready for the State wide changes that will occur in 2019 with the new senior assessment and tertiary entrance system (ATAR). A lot is happening at Kilkivan and it always excites me to see what our students are producing and more importantly how quickly our students are progressing. I encourage you to come into our school, see what is happening in your child’s class and make time to chat with your child’s teacher/s. Successful Scholarship Recipient. There really isn’t much Mrs Renita Henry-May can’t do, and now she is off to Japan as one of only 6 successful applicants to receive an international scholarship to Japan. On the 5 th of January Mrs Henry-May will board a plane for a 15 day study tour of Japan. I congratulate her successful application and look forward to our students being the beneficiary of her increased knowledge. First Aid On 8 th of November at Kilkivan State School library we will be holding a first aid course. This is a great opportunity to increase your knowledge or update your skills. See inside for all details. Senior Assessment and Tertiary entrance system changes. Following advice from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and strong support from education stakeholder and principals’ associations, the new arrangements will now start for students entering Year 11 in 2019. Commencement in 2019 will ensure that teachers, students and parents have time to understand and familiarise themselves with the new arrangements. Continued Over Page…. Singing and reading with your baby or toddler is not only fun, but a fantastic way for them to hear sounds and learn new words. Recent research reviews have indicated that singing nursery rhymes and reading with young children in a fun and interactive way can contribute to later literacy abilities.

Term 4 Swimming This Term 4, all students complete a Swimming unit as part of their HPE studies. This is just a friendly reminder to parents that all students will need togs and a rash shirt for swimming. If a child’s hair falls in their face when swimming a bathing cap will also be needed. Swimming will start the first week of the Term and it would be greatly appreciated if the children have this equipment right from the start. Thank you, Hollie Graham and Shellee Davies. HPE Teachers

CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

P & C FUNDRAISER CHAPPY CHAT

Hi All, I have been noticing how much some of the students are growing lately. Or I am shrinking! LOL No, they are definitely on a growth spurt! This means that they will need more energy to support that growth and protein in particular to help build healthy bodies. Children can be extra hungry when they are growing so much and may need extra food in their lunch boxes. Nutritious foods like cheese, lentils, rice and beans, salami cubes, meat and eggs are especially good for a growing child as they provide the protein they need. Pack a small container with a cold boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, cubed cheese, meat and vegie sticks. Or try this Mock chicken sandwich filling to put on your choice of sliced bread or flat bread. Enjoy!

MOCK CHICKEN Sandwich Filling Lightly fry 1 chopped onion in butter. Add 1 chopped tomato and cook till soft and mushy. (2 OR 3 minutes) Add 1 beaten egg and 2 tablespoons of grated cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cool.

Spread on sandwiches.

Food for Thought Put aside a little time with your child to talk with them about their day. Listen and be open to how your child is feeling, as well as show them how to problem solve. Encouraging them to suggest possible solutions for their problems, will build your child’s resilience and help them develop life skills for the future. See you soon, Chappy
