Welcome to our monthly edition of OpenLine. The holiday season has come to a close and I would like to thank our Operations department for working so diligently in getting drivers home for Christmas. While it is no easy task to accomplish, we pride ourselves in prioritizing our drivers’ family time during the holiday season.

As we enter the new year and reflect on 2018, the state of our company remains strong. In the past year, we announced a well-deserved pay raise to our drivers, rolled out a new scorecard bonus structure, and added other driver support benefits. Even with these improvements, I look forward to introducing additional driver-friendly programs and incentives in 2019.

We will purchase 490 new trucks this year with the majority being Kenworth T680 automatics and trade 420 of our existing trucks to keep the age of our fleet in line. While we’ve discontinued purchasing diesel powered APU’s, in order to keep our engine idle time in check, we are currently testing electric APUs on a small number of trucks. All trucks continue to have the Espar style heaters.

I’d also like to recognize our Driver of the Month, Marvin Geddings/GEDM and Rookie of the Month, Kevin Clark/CLAK. Their hard work and loyalty to our company certainly do not go unnoticed and I look forward to their future accomplishments at Melton.

On the topic of achievements, I would like to thank our terrific employees for voting us the #1 Midsize Employer by The Oklahoman. Melton has been chosen as a Top Workplace finalist for the last 4 years and reclaimed the #1 spot in 2018. Also, our company was ranked as one of the Top 50 Companies for Women to Work for in Transportation by Women in Trucking. These awards, along with many other accomplishments, are a testament to the innovative culture and positive work environment our company has developed.

With a new quarter comes the opportunity for drivers to capitalize on their PRIDE Performance Bonus. Drivers can earn up to $5,400 through this bonus program by maximizing points in the categories of Safety Performance, Operational Performance, Fuel Performance, and Shop Compliance. While drivers’ base pay and benefits remain at the top of our industry, these extra incentives allow even the most productive drivers to be challenged and earn extra cash throughout the year.

Please follow up on your PHA screening results. If your results suggest a lifestyle change such as smoking cessation or blood pressure medication, please act on this appropriately. For employees who met iCarePlus standards we just paid over $77,000 in health bonuses.

Lastly, on a Safety note, it is a challenging time of year for driving in many states with winter weather introducing numerous hazards to our drivers. It is important to recognize that cold weather brings threats to drivers each time that they operate their truck. Issues such as fuel gelling up, slick road conditions, and low visibility from blowing snow are just a few of the largest problems a driver can run into. We always advise caution during the winter months and contact your Driver Manager if at any point you feel it is unsafe to be on the road. Only you decide if it’s safe to proceed. We trust your judgement and maintain a top priority of delivering freight safely.

Wishing you all a safe and productive 2019,

Bob PetersonChairman and Chief Executive Officer

The driver score card (DSC) was implemented so drivers can review and measure their overall performance in MPG, Safety, Operations and the Shop. This tool is also useful to set personal goals, and audit their Operations, CSA, and internal Safety records at Melton Truck Lines. Each of the criteria is assigned a point value for positive performance like attending safety meetings or getting more credentials, and/or negative performance like receiving tickets or having unexcused late loods.

Rate My Load Feature on the Transflo AppBy: Marilyn Surber - Employee Services Manager

We take every precaution to protect our drivers from situations that could arise from unknowingly hauling contraband – from screening customers to performing thorough security inspections of equipment and loads.

Some factors that may lead to suspicion include: • Unusual behavior or requests at the point of loading • Pickup or delivery from/to vacant or abandoned property• Load documentation that does not match company instructions• Cargo inconsistent with the place of pickup or delivery• Monitoring activities at pickup or delivery locations

As the “eyes and ears” of Melton Truck Lines, we need you to contact your Driver Manager, Extended Coverage or Terminal Manager if you have concerns about the security of a load.

S.A.F.E.Safe.Accurate.focus.everyday

Our 2019 Safety Campaign is underway. Please like us on social media so you can keep up with what is going on each month in the Safety Department. We will continue to deliver the required training to you in a number of ways, including hotline messages, daily terminal safety meetings, terminal monitors, online training links, email blasts, QUALCOMM tips, and driver manager reinforcement. Please make sure we have an email address for you so you can receive our weekly Safety email. Remember participating in the training is required and will earn you extra points on your scorecard.

This month we will focus on: Securing Rolled Roofing

Rolled roofing can be a challenging load to secure, but when secured properly, it is as safe to transport as anything else we haul. Most rolled roofing is loaded standing on end then bundled with shrink wrap on a pallet. Pallets are loaded side by side down the length of the trailer and a second layer may be added on top of that. As it sits before being secured this load lacks stability. The key to introducing stability into this load and making it safe to haul is to use V-Boards and layer your securement.

Secure in Layers

Secure the load in layers by placing a single strap through the pallet of the top layer as shown in the example. This should be done for at least the first and last sections of the load. The number of sections and available straps will determine how much layering you can do. The more the better. V-boards in conjunction with straps over the top, spread the pressure from the straps and help hold the individual pieces together. Your V-Boards should run the entire length of the load with as few gaps as possible. Additionally, place V-Boards and cross straps at the ends of the load to lock it down.

Use Cross Straps Front and Back

The construction and use of V-Boards are included in your Load Securement Guide. More detailed and illustrated instructions for Rolled Roofing are also in the Load Securement Guide.

T.I.P.S. for Injury PreventionBy Scott Stephan, Director of Safety and Compliance

Take the Time -

Our safest, most productive drivers don’t do anything in a rush. That doesn’t mean they don’t hustle, but speed never comes at the expense of safety. Always remember, your first priority is to protect yourself and others from harm. EVERYTHING else is secondary.

Inform Safety -

Safety is available 24/7/365. Allow us to guide and assist you with the challenges you face out on the road. Many of our safety personnel were drivers themselves. We have walked the same path and have a true desire to keep drivers safe.

Plan your moves -

Proper planning prevents PAIN. Planning is the enemy of risk. The more you plan your moves, the less likely you are to get hurt. Think about the actions you take and do everything you can to remove the risk from your work.

Stay alert -

Many accidents happen when we are fatigued or distracted. These are the times when we need to take the most care. As awareness goes down risk goes up. Don’t let complacency or inattention end your day in a tragic way.
