Mound Installation Sequence

How Much Do I Need?

Outline your landing areas and

plateau using a mound gauge

to obtain the desired slope.

Excavate 3” below the surface,

Level and tamp firm.

Fill around blocks with adjacent

soil and tamp to wedge

together.

Rake MVP and infield mix over

the surface and hand drag.

To repair, cut up blocks or use

(PMC). Sweep out hole to

expose packing clay, moisten,

then add repair clay.

Cover your mound with a

plastic tarp to hold moisture.

Tamp and water thoroughly sev-

eral times for about an hour.

Allow water to be absorbed into

clay so blocks swell.

Apply a thin layer of Profes-

sional Mound Clay (PMC),

Moisten and tamp.

Excavate the landing area and

be 10” wider and longer than

the longest stride of your

pitchers. Blocks should be

within a 1/2” of the surface.

Wedge the blocks into position.

Keep the tops 1/2” below the

rubber.

THE INFIELD & INFILL MIX

All soils consist of sand, silt and clay. The infield mix is the combination of these components plus any conditioners or

additives. To understand how your mix works you need to understand the components.

100% sand is loose, dry, free flowing and drains well. It will produce an unstable and unpredictable surface. With the right

amount of water it will be firm and playable but forgiving, allowing for sliding and clean ball hops. Consider a beach where

the water meets the shore. This area would make a very playable surface.

Silt & Clay have opposite issues. Drainage is poor so water puddles creating slippery areas and rain-outs. When clay

and silt get too dry they become rock hard increasing the probability of injury. But, if kept at the right moisture level and

properly groomed, clay & silt are very stable and wear resistant making them ideal for high impact areas.

Water Management is Critical for a Safe Playable Field No Matter What the Soil Mix!

Knowing the make up or composition of your infield mix will help determine a baseline from which maintenance practices

can be developed. A sand, silt, clay analysis can be performed on your filed by your Conserv FS Certified Turf

Field Orientation: Align the field so that the pitcher is throwing across the sunrise/sunset line. Step 1: Triangulate The Backstop If there is no backstop, position the apex of home plate in an appropriate spot. For positioning the apex of home plate using an existing backstop, start from one outside corner of the backstop and run a string or tape measure out to a couple of feet past where you think the pitching rubber will be. Scribe an arc. Repeat this process starting from the second post, making sure the second string or tape is the same length as the first. Next, measure and locate the center of the backstop. Extend a straight line from this point out to where the arcs intersect. Position the apex of home plate on this line, and depending on which type of field, a prescribed distance from the backstop.

Step 2: Locate Second BaseRun a line from the center point on the backstop, through the apex and over pitcher's mound to place second base on center. The distance to measure is from the apex of home plate to the center of second base.

This is the APEX. Drive a stake into the ground here. This point will be used to measure out the rest of the field.
