    In this assessment I am going to elaborate on m impressions of the

    follo!ing courses I had during the pre"ious semesters # Introduction to $nglish

    Linguistics % Present&'a $nglish () Phonetics and Phonolog % Present&'a

    $nglish 2) 'escripti"e *rammar+ ,hat I ha"e found useful and fascinating !ill be

    highlighted through this paper % ho!e"er % less interesting parts of these courses

    !ill also be mentioned+ Moreo"er % the paper !ill gi"e an e-planation of the topics

    of the courses !hich !ere the most helpful in de"eloping m language skills and

    kno!ledge+

    .s to begin % during Introduction to $nglish Linguistics % I ha"e found the

    topic of linguistic communication the most interesting+ Through this part of the

    course mainl the functions and tpes of signs !ere discussed along !ith the

    general understanding of communication+ .nother useful topic !as the design

    features of languages % in !hich !e ha"e discussed the /"e main characteristics

    of human languages as dualit % producti"it % displacement % arbitrariness and

    patterning+ ,hat I found the least useful during this course !as the mandator

    memorization of se"eral topic related terms % since sometimes !e ended up

    confusing them+

    Secondl % the course !hich I ha"e disco"ered to be the most interesting and

    useful !as Phonetics and Phonolog+ This course contributed to a better

    understanding of the $nglish pronunciation % especiall the standard Southern

    0ritish one+ 0eing taught about the main characteristics of the 0ritish accent

    made me mostl interested in di1erent $nglish accents as !ell as it has also

    greatl de"eloped m o!n pronunctiation+ ,e had man entertaining tasks

    concerning speaking and pronuncing !ords the right !a+ ,e ha"e also learnt

    about e-ceptional $nglish !ords being pronunced in une-pected !as % as

    Nor!ich or Leicester+ &dropping % linking&r % intrusi"e&r % the pronunciation of

    4t and 4l in di1erent !ords !ere discussed+ ,e ha"e also learnt about the

    pronunciation of 4the depending on !hether it is follo!ed b a consonant or a

    "o!el+ 'espite that I think this course !as the most useful during the semesters %

    I ha"e found the stud of phonetic smbols di6cult and useless % since it has not

    helped deepening our language skills % 7ust our rote&memorization+ .nother topic I

    ha"e not found interest in !as the dra!ing of tree diagrams+ I belie"e !riting

    small tests e"er seminar has helped learning the materials !ell+

    Lastl % I !ould like to mention 'escripti"e *rammar+ .s far as I am concerned

    % this course is crucial for understanding $nglish grammar and hence using it

    more accuratel+ 8nfortunatel % during this course % most of the students !ere

    unable the follo! the seminar % ha"ing been clueless about the topics+ ,e !ere

    constantl gi"en papers !ith tasks % altough !e ha"e not been e-plained or

    taught about anthing concerning them+ If !e did not understand something %

    !e !ere gi"en "ague e-planations+ 9o!e"er % through the gi"en tasks % most of

    us !ere able to understand the rules and patterns % especiall those !ho had a

    chance to take part in the lecture as !ell+ .dditionall % one positi"e attribution of

    the seminar !as its interacti"it % re:uiring e"er single student to take acti"el

    part in the seminar+

    To sum up % I belie"e all of the materials included in these courses are

    signi/cant and necessar for de"eloping students kno!ledge of the language %

    despite the fact that some of them !ere presented in a rather dull and

    indistincti"e !a+
