The Replacement Girl
hen the Supima organization was created back in 1954, the association set out to elevate American-grown Pima cotton and
create a luxury ingredient partnered with famed photographer, William Helburn to produce an advertising campaign that captured the luxury of
Supima cotton and Helburn chose model Barbara Mullen as the face of the Supima campaign.Sixty-one years later, 90 year-old Mullen, spending her time between Switzerland and New Mexico
caught the attention of London-based journalist and designer John-Michael O’Sullivan. Fascinated with Mullen’s story, O’Sullivan is on the verge of publishing a biography on the fashion mannequin. The Replacement Girl: A life in 24 Frames, chronicles the life of Barbara Mullen as top international fashion model in the Mid-20th-Century. Dubbed “The Re-placement Girl” by photographer Lillian Bassman, Mullen became one of the most sought-after models of her time. In addition to paying homage to Mullen by giving the model a voice, O’Sullivan wants to give readers insight into the rise of the modeling industry.

With a nod to craftsmanship, Banana Republic has become a select retailer for everything Supima. The American-grown, extra-long staple cotton highlights the ever-growing quality that more and more consumers are looking for: softness, longevity and resilience. Known to get better with age, Supima cotton keeps its shape and color, the fabric is known for its resistance to pilling and softer as time goes on, so it’s no wonder that the preeminent lifestyle retailer has steadily in-creased its offerings of styles that are made with Supima cotton.
From classic items to the more fashion-driven pieces, Banana Republic has artfully merchandised its collections for both men and women to feature products made with Supima. Product offerings for Him include traditional button-downs, graphic crew neck tees and sweater bomber jackets to name a few. And for her, Banana Republic includes off-the-shoulder tops in various styles and colors and a fashion spectrum of t-shirts from ladder lace couture to tie-front crews.

ince announcing its plans to contract forensic firm Oritain Global, Supima cotton has been leading the way in helping to educate the industry on the importance of transparency. In a window of three months, Supima’s VP of Marketing and Promotion, Buxton Midyette, has been invited to participate in three conference roundtables to discuss the company’s efforts to promote transparency.
Hosting denim industry trade shows in New York and Amsterdam, the Kingpins Transformers sum-mit series focuses on social, environmental and economic challenges facing the denim industry. Be-lieving that product accountability is a growing concern for retailers and consumers, this year’s events shined the light on transparency. Joining Midyette on the podium where industry leaders from across all areas of the supply chain included: Roberto Candiani, Candiani Denim; Tricia Carey, Lenzing, Direc-tor Global Business Development; Frouke Bruinsma, G-Star Raw, Corporate Responsibility Director; Helen Sahi, Avery Dennison’s Global Senior Director of Sustainability; and Ben Tomkins, Oritain Global, to name a few.
The 2018 Innovation series was another summit held in New York on May 15. Cohosted by Core-sight Research together with TrendSeeder, 24 Seven and law firm Davis & Gilbert, the evening was focused on exploring “The Profile of the New Consumer”. Panelists including Supima’s Midyette; Paul Blum, former CEO of Henri Bende, Fred Segal, Juicy Couture, Kenneth Cole and David Yurman; Mike Karam, Head of Strategy, Laird+Partners discussed how consumers are shopping, how they are using different technologies and what factors value when choosing among brands with trans-parency leading the way.
From Amsterdam to New York, Midyette has been reinforcing the story of American-grown Supima cotton and its new partnership with Oritain Global to authenticate and verify Supima cotton. Being able to trace the premium cotton back to famers in America is a big step in providing transparency to the industry and ultimately the consumer.
