PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dr. Martha Holloway

Every teacher is concerned with motivation and rightly so because motivation can determine why one student is successful and another of equal ability is not. Motivation is a theoretical construct used to explain the initiation, direction intensity, and persistence of behavior, especially goal-directed behavior. Children's motivation changes as a result of their engagement in music. In "Developing Motivation" from The Child as Musician, James Austin, James Renwick and Gary E. McPherson explain the key developmental processes for motivation in music.

First, young children tend to equate ability with effort or pro-social behavior. They view ability as malleable - something that can be steadily improved over time. As children get older and struggle or fail despite putting forth great effort, they begin to think that

trying harder than another child to complete the same task implies less ability. They now view ability as something that is fixed or uncontrollable. Music ability, in particular, is considered by many to be an inherited trait. Children who conceive of music ability as fixed and who believe they lack ability in music, may see no point in participating in musical activity, let alone investing a great deal of time and effort toward developing musical expertise. Children who maintain an incremental and multifaceted view of music ability, however, will typically initiate and sustain motivation for music learning, because the challenge and positive benefits derived from improving one's own ability more than offset any negative inferences that arise from trying hard in comparison with others.

Young children often are overly optimistic about their ability. As they develop and process social comparison information, their self-concept becomes more realistic and in line with actual achievement. The decline in self-concept is problematic to the extent that children experience diminished motivation, adopt self-handicapping strategies or withdraw from achievement situations. achievement goals, children can experience meaningful success and restore their sense of competence. In music, the very public nature of learning and evaluative processes may make it more challenging for students to sustain positive self-concepts. When learning to play piano, young children must invest reasonable effort and develop some degree of proficiency before they will derive motivational benefits from the process. With age, the relationship between the various facets of motivation and achievement becomes more reciprocal in nature. Once children progress to an intermediate level of musicianship, they should be able to draw on prior accomplishments to initiate motivation, and rely on motivation in turn, to further enhance skills and ensure continued success. Randall Faber has developed the "Facilitative Factors Model" which is about factors that facilitate motivation. In his presentation at the Collaborative Conference, he showed an equilateral triangle (▲). At each point is one of the following three words: "competence," "self-esteem" and "reinforcement." The three factors (competence, self-esteem, and reinforcement) interact, synergistically inflate each other, and increase motivation. If any one of the

three factors is lacking, motivation will drop. Faber’s Facilitative Factors Model is described in his paper, “Motivational and Developmental Stages in Music Study.” You are absolutely right in thinking you need to be concerned about each student's level of motivation. You can assist the student in setting realistic goals. Through team-work with parents, some level of proficiency or competence can be reached. The reinforcement for work well-done must always be present and sincere. Whether the student is in elementary school or college, Faber's triangle of competence, self-esteem, and reinforcement is an on-going process. Students stay motivated, succeed, and so do their teachers! Let's improve our own motivation. See you at the State Conference in Laramie July 12-14. LOCAL ASSOCIATION

REPORTS

Casper Arlene Osborn

The Casper Music Teachers have been busy preparing students for Area Achievement Days during the past four months. In January we gathered to share our favorite music,

game, or other interest. A duet recital was planned for February, but due to conflicts was postponed for a later time. Eric Unruh led a master class in March where students fine-tuned their music in preparation for AADs. His suggestions provided improvements for both students and teachers. Thank you Dr. Unruh. Area Achievement Days were held at Durham Hall on April 28th twenty-one students and five teachers participated. Adjudicator, Jerilynn Seifert, from Cheyenne, was encouraging in her comments that will be helpful to both teachers and students. Thank you Jerilynn. Our spring luncheon will be held on May 14th where we will have election of officers for the coming year. We are looking forward to the Summer Conference in July in Laramie and hope to see many teachers and students.

Cheyenne Lucy Woodman

The Cheyenne chapter is completing a year of meetings and student events. We will meet for lunch in May with our Guild judge, and will distribute certificates for all our grade school and junior high school students through their schools. With these, we recognize

students who study piano with member teachers for a whole school year. Seals and ribbons may be attached, to recognize participation and high grades in theory, the CMTA November Piano-fest, AAD, and Guild Auditions. Meetings will resume in September with a continuing board of officers. They are Barbara Ruegge, president; Brianna Cramer and Marilyn Kisicki, secretaries; Jane Gilbert, treasurer; and Lucy Woodman, publicity. Vice President Jan Stock will soon be leaving for a 3-year church mission in England, and she will be missed. We have welcomed 3 new members, and have prepared an informational pamphlet for visitors and new members. One of our new members is organist/pianist John Hillebolt, who gave us a program on the renovated organ at the First Presbyterian Church in Cheyenne. A discussion of performance anxiety and ways of dealing with it was led by Lucy Woodman. Mary Meyer, director of the Laramie County Library Foundation, gave a description of various kinds of facilities in the new library building, which is scheduled to open in September. Our AAD was held in March at Laramie County Community College. Donna Bogard of Denver, and Mary Amendola, Jaylene Willhite, and Becky

Tish of Cheyenne were judges for over 90 students. Most of our members will present students in the National Guild Auditions, to be held in May, also at LCCC. Two members will present some of the same students again in the Royal American Conservatory Examinations, to be held on May 26 in the UW Fine Arts Auditorium. Other projects include a chapter web page, and archives for chapter history. We look forward to the Wyoming Conference in July, and expect to enter students in both the SAD and the Student Festival.

Cody Cynthia Kaelberer

The Cody Association held their annual Area Auditions March 10th with 90 students and 7 teachers participating. Two of the students were organ students and presented their pieces on the pipe organ at Christ Episcopal Church. There was also an Honor’s Recital which followed that evening. The students played for a packed house with a very appreciative audience. The judges were Linda Parko, Donna Beauchamp, and James Hager. The final meeting of this year was held April 11th. We have begun making tentative plans for another workshop for students and teachers to be held, hopefully, in October.

Laramie Gloria Orr-Weiss

The Laramie Music Teachers are busy getting our students ready for Auditions in May. Hopefully we will have a lot of students that will qualify to play in the State Auditions here in Laramie in July. A recital was held in February. It was a huge success. We hope that everyone is planning to attend the State Conference here in July. Last evening some of us were able to attend Theresa Bogards recital. It was an inspiration for all of us. See you in July.

Sheridan

Janet van Houten The Sheridan Music Teachers Association has continued to study the various skills which piano students need, besides playing solos, at the monthly meetings. These have included improvising, playing by ear, transposing, playing from lead lines, and composing. Our Area Achievement Day was held on Saturday, March 3rd, with Carolyn Deuel of Casper as the adjudicator. Twenty-three students participated of teachers Jeannene McKnight, Betsy Edwards, Karen Wall, and Janet van Houten.

COMPOSITION COMPETITION

REPORT Greg Strampe

There were two entries this year in the annual Composition Contest, both at the junior division. Benjamin Kaiser received runner up for his composition, "Lost Kitten". Austen Motily received 1st place for his piece, "Sunken Kingdom", and it also went on to compete at the Division level. They are both from Cheyenne and are students of Lucy Woodman. Composer Anne Guzzo, of Laramie, was the judge for the event. Congratulations to Austin and Benjamin.

LETTERS OF APPRECIATION

Dear Wyoming Music Teacher Association, I would like to extend my utmost appreciation and gratitude to the Wyoming Music Teacher’s Association. Your financial support these last two years has made it possible for me to attend two Northwest regional competitions (2006 and 2007) and the National competition in 2006. The ability to play in these regional and national level competitions is a great opportunity for me,

and without your support the financial burden of attending would have been overwhelming. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Amy Adams Wyoming Representative Collegiate Artist, Saxophone Thank you for your support in the MTNA piano competition. Your kindness really helped! Thanks, Lucas Furtado
